Honestly this is a real prime time soap so I’d have no problem with a recast. I hate that shows don’t do that anymore in prime time but instead will create these exact replica characters with a new name. Hell, call Corbin Bleu. I don’t think he’d be hard to recast.

I think primetime viewers are just not accustomed to recasts. They form a stronger bond to a character “as played by so-and-so” instead of a character who is just part of a larger whole. It’s certainly easier on a show with a massive canvas like GoT to recast a secondary character like Daario, but I doubt they’d ever have recast Cersei, Tyrion, or even Sansa unless it was *very* early on. Fans would have rioted. Empire still has a relatively tight ensemble, so a new actor in a pivotal role can really throw off the energy.

I can see both sides. At the end of the day, the show has totally burned itself out, but I do see how vital Jamal is/was in showing what an unapologetically gay black man could look like to an audience who’ve only known black gay men in a certain way. I’m sure Lee sees the show as a vessel to deliver that image.

Still, this is way more ink than Empire has had since that surprisingly huge first season (where it felt like every black person in the country watched). For a lot of people, this story’s a reminder that the show’s still airing.

Right. I am one that is NOT in favor of a recast for Jamal. And I think it might not go over well with a lot of viewers. Especially for many of us who have consistently watched this show from the beginning.  I would rather they just bring in a new character.  But we'll see what happens, and things may work themselves out one way or the other.

    • I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
    • I also never understood Alex's friendship with Sonni or keeping the secret of Marah's paternity.  Not exactly heartbroken about Ms. Sally being ushered to the Hereafter.

I'm sorry but I'm a glutton for punishment. Would love to see this woman OWNING the canvas. Telling off Leslie who tells her she's the head b!tch.
    • And in case anyone is confused; Rusty was hired by HB to work undercover and infiltrate some gang sabotaging Lewis.
