After months of deciding to duck the limelight and not engage with the situation, suddenly he is brazenly denying it and making claims about Y&R approaching him to return (which I don't believe at all). It almost seems as though he's back in some manic phase. It makes me wonder, not for the first time, if this dude is unbalanced.

He was probably told by someone (PR agent, JFP, etc) that if he toed the line, followed the rules, and was an all around good boy that TPTB could see that he was a rehabilitated man who could play by the rules of the sand box. His good behavior didn't bear fruit. He knows Adam is about to be recast. His agent put out feelers and got rejected. Now he is letting it all hang out. Why not? Not doing so didn't yeild positive results. Muhney is a narcissist.
