I don't get why Burton would be allowed to hawk that stuff at a fan event.

Don't you know? He's Jesus. Or should I say "Jasus"? ;)

The fan events are mostly private events hosted by the actors and his/her fans. It was only when he convinced Guza to let him hawk Monavie on the show did the network stepped in. Frankly, I cannot believe that he and Guza were not fired on the spot. ABC really is full of nutjobs.

Depends on the event. A lot of soap events are done by third party promoters or by the fan clubs. The network was in charge of events like Super Soap Weekend or Fun in the Sun but for others it's whatever the actor wants or whatever the contract with the promoter will allow.

ABC comments on his exit and it gets barely one line

Steve Burton Exits GH

In an interview with TV Guide, Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) confessed that he has chosen to exit General Hospital in the coming months. This is disappointing. but gives us an excuse to share a little secret. The next few months – leading up to GH’s monumental 50th anniversary on April 1, 2013 – are going to be completely insane (in the good way). Evidence #1: Duke Lavery shows up, yesterday, alive and well? What’s the deal with that- and when is he going to see Anna? We have a feeling no one saw that coming – and trust us, there’s more twists like that one on the horizon.

I think they're just trying to downplay it and get people excited for whats coming that's all. Not that I think losing Burton is going to hurt the show.

Franco was never a great actor to me. His next movie is a teen movie with Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson

Yeah, he stinks for sure, and was lucky enough to kiss Sean Penn. Thats it!

i hope that frees up money for Bobbie to come back

Not in the form of JZ! I have a weak stomach!

And if anything, this just frees up cash for another OLer.

Does that make him crazy?
