Pretty much all of Passions was outlandish and over the top ridiculous.

Marlena being possessed by the devil or being a serial killer on DAYS was ridiculous.

I never watched GL, but it sounds like nearly everything related to Reva was over the top.

For AMC, Erica's unabortion was ridiculous and insulting. Project Orpheus ranks up there too in terms of stupidity/over the top unbelievability.

The Salem Stalker thing was the worst. A ridiculous serial killer leaves so much physical and DNA evidence that the cops are stumped by this "mad man!!!" Then the explanation for how it was done ridiculously did not even match what we first saw!

I think DAYS' Possession would rank No. 1 of all time, simply because it was the first (in a long line to come!) of the most out-there and talked-about stories in daytime soaps. GH's weather machine was pretty crazy, but that gets categorized under the whole big umbrella of the Luke-and-Laura phenomenon.

Once DAYS' possession story aired, nothing was off-limits, so viewers became bombarded and desensitized to sensational over-the-top stories. That's why people rapidly aging over Rosario jewels was ho-hum on Sunset Beach, and witches and living dolls and portals into Hell wasn't anything to rush to watch. Passions even re-did the buried alive story, which didn't do jack. All the big shock-value stories just became been-there-done-that silliness.

I don't consider The Possession outlandish because if it were just about Marlena being possessed by the devil, it would have failed. It was really a story about redemption, faith and love. That is why most of the copycat "outrageous" storylines on other shows failed because they were outrageous for the sake of being outrageous. If you look at all of the so called outlandish stories that Days did between 93 and 97, you will see that they all based in real human emotion.

ITA, especially about all the out-there stuff Days did 93-97. The stuff afterwards was shock-value stuff purely. But the idea of a beloved longtime character being possessed by the devil is still outlandish and shocking and "never been done", and certainly had a huge impact. The idea of being possessed by the devil means believing in God, which not all viewers do, so that's a stretch of the imagination right there for some.
