October 12, 201114 yr Member Don;t get me wrong I think the show is awful but so far the ratings are on par with what AMC had been doing the last 5 months. AMC was in the 1.7's several times. That said I don't think the viewership has bottomed out yet.

That's why I think ABC would look foolish if they said this was good.
October 12, 201114 yr Member I don't know how much money ABC is making at this point, with ever falling ratings. I doubt Mario Batalli and friends come too cheap. But its not as expensive as paying 30 plus contracts with all the tech folks. So I bet ABC is making more money of Chew than AMC. In ratio terms anyway

In ratio terms anyway Also the Chew doesnt need to change its sets, also studio time I imagine with be a fourth than what AMC was. In no way am I defending Chewy Im just saying while we are glad that Chewy is falling To ABC this is a success money wise anyway and for the time being.

October 12, 201114 yr Member If it gets to a point where affiliates start complaining doesn't that cost them money? Not really. Not unless their local news tanks drastically and they bank on daytime news.
October 12, 201114 yr Member If it gets to a point where affiliates start complaining doesn't that cost them money? They can complain yes. But at the end of the day the Chew is still cheaper than AMC. So any money Chew makes for ABC is a plus over losing money on AMC
October 12, 201114 yr Member I still believe the cancellations are more about cost and ABC's longer term plan to goto a daytime syndication model. Broadcast network television is a shell of what it once was anyway and are not the cash cows they once were.ABC as a network is a mess. CBS is the most successful because much of their scripted programming is being successfully sold into syndication which is the uplift to airing primarily procedurals and comedies versus serialized shows like ABC tends to do which do poorly in syndication. Look at the success of shows in syndication like NCIS and Criminal Minds which do 100 times better than shows like DH and Greys do in syndication. The Chew, The Talk, are cheap. NO they won't evey be synidicated but then neither will any of the soaps. BUT i also think Frons is the WRONG person to have running any of this because he just has no clue. October 13, 201114 yr Member As long as ABC is making money on this show it wont matter. It cost a fraction of what AMC did. So I bet ABC is happy with their bottom line at the moment. Eventually, they will start to lose money if the ratings continue to decline because the cost of production will gradually go up the longer the show is on the air. October 13, 201114 yr Member Eventually, they will start to lose money if the ratings continue to decline because the cost of production will gradually go up the longer the show is on the air. Right. That's why the "it's cheaper" argument never quite works for me, because costs increase with these shows over time, as ratings decline. If it's about cheapness, then they should just run repeats of primetime shows.

Right, that's a given And again The Chew just started. With time, fine tuning it could be a modest sucess. Look at the View. It took years before they took off. October 13, 201114 yr Member Right, that's a given And again The Chew just started. With time, fine tuning it could be a modest sucess. Look at the View. It took years before they took off. The View mostly got attention for being a trainwreck. I'm not sure where that can go with The Chew, unless Mario reduces Daphne to tears in split screen.
October 13, 201114 yr Member Once the affiliates gain the hour and move the show around it will collapse. Reason why Port Charles was so darn bad. I mean on my affiliate and im sure many others Port Charles use to come on at 1 in the freakin morning.

If it's about cheapness, then they should just run repeats of primetime shows. Repeats no longer really work because of syndication. CBS seems to have mastered the art--Criminal Minds on ION, AE, weekend nights as a package and probably elsewhere. Maybe ABC could do something with old episodes of Brothers and Sisters (no real buyers) but the ratings would blow. To cut costs, ABC should copy TODAY and run for four hours.
