OLTL: Discussion for the week of October 3

Am I the only one who thought John did the baby's voice? (Not just cuz he's John's son)

Anyway I agree with all of that, except I like Tina more than you (and it seems abrupt after her first two episodes, but glad she's being written as less of a cartoon), and I'll grant RC that he is doing a bit better of a job than I expected with Todd/Blair. As Vee said, they are bringing up bad parts of their history, etc...

The scenes with Tina and Viki were much-needed, with that perfect blend of pathos and little girl lost Andrea brings as Tina. I liked that Viki didn't even have a reason for double standards, and after the conversation, decided to make a fresh start. PDV is adorable and steals the show.

I wish they wouldn't compare Viki/Clint and Cord/Tina. I don't think there's a comparison. Viki and Clint have both moved on with their lives, several times, and while I realize that they have still brought up their fondness for one another, even when they were with other people, I don't see it as true love or something that can't be quit. What bothers me, and sure, I should probably get over it, but I can't, is that I feel like the show has just decided to write off everything Clint has done in the last few years. It hangs in the air in his scenes with Cord (who is genuinely a very kind man), as it's tough for me to believe Cord would get past this stuff. It hangs in the air with any idea of a Clint/Viki reunion, because a woman whose entire life has been defined by mentally unstable, abusive men shouldn't want a happy ending with one.

I don't think that was Michael Easton doing the baby voice.

I just watched today's episode and I thought it was great. Even love DV and Liam's talk.

I didn't think there was anything boring or dull about today's (well yesterday's) show. It brings me back to something I commented to CarlD months ago. I truly believe a lot today's audience simply does not care about character driven shows and prefer plot driven stories and action.

I don't think viewers have ever been given a chance to choose. Soaps today don't know how to do character-driven or plot-driven stories. You can drive a truck through the plots on OLTL, and some of them just sit there and die, right on camera, in the most slow, agonizing way (eg, the Liam paternity saga, Matthew killing Eddie Ford, Matthew's coma, Destiny's baby, anything with Rex/Gigi). It's not as if viewers are lapping up this Henry Slesar richness.

If people think the current episodes are dull then it's partially down to all the histrionics of past episodes, often histrionics that had no real purpose, like Irene and the bomb.

Soaps don't have the budget for action. Action now means something like the fifteenth murder mystery no one cares about.

I'd take a scene like the one with Tea and Tina or Tina and Viki, or even Blair over the phone with Dorian, over a million hostage crises and shootings from the noble rapists.

I see what you're saying. I just don't think that people not caring as much means viewers can't take character-driven material. I think it's just difficult to engage, because the show has treated so much as camp.

(sorry I guess that's a lot of double negatives)

Watching the last few days catching up and these flashbacks just remind me what a letdown the 90s were compared to the 80s soapswise. The Cord and Tina flashbacks have waterfalls and Indians and "stop the wedding!" and the Todd and Blair flashbacks are subdued staring and talking. Cord and Tina > all that came after. I just wish Clint Ritchie was still alive, because his absence during the history laden discussion btw Cord and Clint is glaring. You got Viki, you got Cord, you got Tina, and you got this guy pretending he remembers all those stories.

This was a pretty good week. Even the talking dog worked for me.

I think there needs to be a blend. A little camp. A little humor. An explosion or car crash or murder mystery thrown in. But it all needs to be a backdrop for scenes like we had between key characters in the last few weeks. I liked the Ford and Jess scenes because it clarified her motives and conflict. I can't stand Tina but I'm glad she had the chance to address Viki's double standard. I loved the TnB scenes even though I thought the flashbacks were overdone. I like how all these scenes are setting the table for what is to come and I know where most of the characters are coming from. That is character driven storytelling in my opinion. Events impact characters and they react based upon a well established and hopefully consistent POV.

I thought the scenes with Liam and Princess David Vickers worked because they were fairly short and something different. If this comes up again and again, like David's catchphrases, or the "comedy" of forced porn, then I don't know, but I like the idea of crazy little scenes you weren't expecting, but they don't do any damage. That dog is so cute and did sound like a dog of Tina's, although I have to admit that I would have really enjoyed it if the dog was like Einstein.

OLTL has definitely had a level of camp since the Rauch years--even in the Gottlieb era--that I don't associate with, say, AMC (where camp came more from over the top characters playing somewhat reality based stories the way Dickens is camp), so I think that's an important ingredient to keep for the show. But it does get out of balance now--and when the stories that should be dramatic (ie Jessica's sexual abuse and her near-rape by her father) are played that way, it gets hard to watch, or take the show seriously.
