There are similarities too -- they did a fakeout with Amber Benson in that they added her to the opening credits in the episode she was killed off, and they did a fakeout here with Gemma by having her survive death twice only to now kill her for good. She was really good and it sucks to lose her, but this show has plenty of backstory to explore and plenty of chances to use her in flashbacks.

I can see what they're saying though. In a show like this, you need to have people actually die or the audience will not take you seriously. The problem is, when "Lost" killed their first main character, they went with one of their weakest links. "Ringer" chose one of its better characters as the first casualty, which may hurt the show.

I'm gonna keep watching--and it looks from the Jan preview that maybe they're gonna lighten it up a bit now, but... I had a hard time with Jemma's death too. To have her tied up and missing for so long, only to have her shot and THEN survive and then shot again felt gratuitous to me. Kill her or don't, but to drag it out like that simply was minipulative and unpleasant.

I'm sure it is--they obviously wanna play out a he said/she said story but... I dunno, something about the setup--whether she was raped or not--is again a bit too iunpleasant than what I expected from this show. Still, admittedly, it is more interesting to not know for sure if we are gonna have this story play out.

I felt he's been channeling his inner Ritchie--from nice guy to not--since the start.

I'm still on episode 7. I was shocked--SHOCKED--when they revealed that Charlie is working with Siobhan! That was an amazing twist. I'm glad I hadn't seen the speculation here about him being behind it, because I just didn't see that one coming at all. Such a great twist.

And Juliet's freakin' awesome: "You owe me bitch, like 10 million dollars!"

I actually loved Gemma's death. I was at the edge of my seat and thought it was so suspenseful and shocking to the last moment. It was *so* unexpected and I liked how brutal it was. This show needs to set itself apart from the other CW shows and I like that it's an adult show. I hope it brings them more viewers when the show returns.

I still feel it was too much. The writers proudly go on "We're doing NOIR, this is NOIR, it's tough, bla bla". The thing is, it's one thing to have a shock death like that for a character in a *movie*, but when doing a soapy take on noir like this, I think you have to consider some other aspects.

    • I knew you would be so excited seeing your girl Brookey as #1!!!! She also WINS as to Frequently Married!!!
    • Yes, Stacy does this both for early DAYS & early GH. I have written some for her, for DAYS. But just one tiny point & that is that she only deals with DVDs. I realize that is not the point of your posting but it seemed the right thing to clarify. I know that you know that video tapes is past, not present.
    • Hahahha I think sleeping with almost all of your daughters's boyfriends and husbands and getting pregnant... definitely gives Brooke the right to top 1 place. Long live the whore of Beverly hills.

    • CurlyQGrl has DVDs of some episodes, that they can sell, but that doesn't matter. What is helpful: they describe the scenes on the tapes, so you can read that as recaps without ordering anything. Doesn't really give storylines, though, which is what you asked for.  Here's the links anyhow. full menu https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/menu.html GH page https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/menu.html GH 1960s https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/eps/gheps1960s.htm
    • I would argue that Another World never played "everything" for laughs. Even when there were comedic scenes in some storylines there were other storylines that were not intended as comedy.  You give 1988 as the end point, and Mary was on the canvas from August 1986 to February 1989, so she must have overlapped with the despised laughs you are referring to at least half of the time she was there. I honestly can't recall any real comedy that Mary would have been part of. I don't think she was lighthearted about choosing between two husbands, MJ's prostitution, Kathleen's death, or even her son Scott dating her daughter Cheryl.  I would have said that the amount of comedy depended on the head writer and there was more comedy under Richard Culliton and Gary Tomlin in 1984 than subsequent headwriters. I guess there was an outbreak of more comedy when Cecile kidnapped Cass from his wedding in 1986, but in general the Sin Stalker wasn't presented as funny, Mitch's return wasn't funny, John's arrival wasn't funny, Reginald wasn't funny. The tone was serious even if the plots verged on the ludicrous. And maybe that's what you mean -- but I would make a distinction between intentional comedy and storylines I can't take seriously for other reasons.
    • I'm excited for us to get back to a full weeks worth of episodes and also us beginning to move into the episodes filmed once the show premiered. We're already starting to see changes in the lighting and the way certain characters are styled. Of course we know this week we have our first recast as well. After the big Eva reveal, I hope the show continues to move into a positive direction and that we see them starting to fix some of the things we've all had issues with.
    • It seems like they may have been going in one direction for Andre and then changed their mind. He had this player/bachelor thing going at first where he was messing with Dani, seemed to be feeling Eva, and then somehow smitten by bland Ashley of all people. I feel like Ashley was supposed to be the one that finally made him want to be with someone and settle. The way he talked her up in those earlier episodes was really confusing. The wonderful, amazing nurse Ashley and conveniently she's unattainable because she has a partner, but he can't stop thinking of her and takes these busted pics of her. It was a mess. However, it all seems to have been dropped. I honestly feel like Andre can go. That may be an unpopular opinion but I don't need his breathy final syllable to be content with BTG. It's always like "There's gotta be another wh-ahyy"
    • This is where McLaibey falls apart. It becomes clear that McTavish had not thought past Brent/Marion...so the energy drops and she starts throwing things at the wall (Blakes twins, Lonatrat.)   Fans HATED this funeral. Everyone is mad at everyone else, which is fine, the death of a beloved community figure would give people a reason to come together...(Quint and Nola could come together at least for  a bit to support each other, Nola and VAn could finally admit they kinda, sorta like each other) Its just an example of McTavish's mean writing.   I have a feeling they were going to make Dahlia Frank's kid but they chickened out. Making Tina a prostitute didn't help, they could have been lovers when they were young but felt society pressure to part. Marcus took over David's role (you can't have two young black men at that time...)   Get used to it...this will happen, the same storyline over and over until the end.
