Even when the ABC soaps make up some ground you're startled by how much they've lost in a year.

I see the Y&R stunts are failing again -- declining ratings and close to losing the 18-34 or 18-49 demo. I guess they are hoping their latest hollow stunt will make a difference.

Does B&B usually go up when Y&R declines?

Y&R had a bad week but is only down 29,000 from last year so no one can really call this a free fall YET. B&B is only up because of this Stephanie is gonna die! story but this hasn't helped them at all in households and seems to, if anything, harmed demos. Considering how many less viewers there are during daytime, Y&R still generally has good demos on par with CW primetime soaps.

I haven't watched Days in a while but wanna see Vivian 'buried alive'--thanx for the heads up! I was wrong about OLTL getting a ratings boost. Don't get why ex ATWT have quit the genre. I like serials and am willing to make a change. I've been watching, a few episodes, and think the show is rather good. The show has a good flow, isn't choppy and story moves at a good pace. The plots aren't all that cleaver or overly creative but, too me, the show is still more interesting than generic GH which just bores me.

The ratings are so odd. They are based on a small sample. You can't convince me that Y&R was so bad on Thursday, when it got a 3.6, that so many people decided not to watch on Friday, dropping the show to a 3.1 Probably 4 people in the Neilsen sample didn't watch on Friday so they droppped so much. In this day and age and with the technologies out there, this is all we got to measure who is watching?

And a P.S. - let's see how this past Monday, 10/4 did for Y&R. Did all those viewers who tuned out just for Friday 10/1, come back?

Mosty likely yes. Don't be surprised if they get 3.5 or higher (and 5 million viewers) on Monday. The rating system sucks - especially when you see such a big difference between days, like the one you mentioned. I bet those people had doctor appointments or something. LOL Maybe there was a pre-emption on Friday in some markets.

It's not about the "genre." The ATWT audience wasn't hanging on for the genre, they were hanging on to say goodbye to their show and now it's gone. When a soap dies, those viewers have a world full of other TV options to choose from and if you like serials there's plenty of primetime shows in syndication that function exactly the same as soaps be it NCIS, Charmed, Supernatural, Cold Case, etc... with a whole lot less compromise required on the part of viewers.

Yeah, I may be the exception in that I don't watch primetime and haven't since childhood. I've generally scheduled my work for night and would never bother to DVR any of those show. You might be shocked, but I've never watched an episode of any show you mentioned. I like daytime serials because onr is able to see and follow the same characters and plots each day. I have watched a few episodes of Criminal Minda and, while it is a good show, hate how they wrap up every crime within one hour. Also, I can't help to think that every soaps have become so generic that they are all basically the same, save the actors. The character profiles and stories are all just knock offs. Y&R is probably the most 'unique' but that is mostly on a stylistic level.

Not really shocked. We all have our TV "universe." I for example don't watch reality TV and haven't since the first season of Survivor. None of it interests me. No Real Housewives, DWTS, Big Brother...none of it. I watched a few episodes of Amazing Race because my friend wanted us to try out for it.

But people don't watch a genre, they watch a show, with characters they know and stories they like. When that show is gone, they aren't looking for a replacement. They're viewers, not addicts. I like procedurals but just because L&O is gone, I'm not jumping immediately to L&O: Los Angeles.

I, to an extent, get what you are saying. Gh bores me to death and I miss most episodes. I'm 34, started seeing ATWT at 3 or 4, and it was my show but OLTL has been pretty easy to get into. I like seeing the same people five says a week and enjoy character verse plot driven shows. I get really bored by the solve a crime in 51 minutes theme on cop shows and Reality is just too staged.

With this said, I miss ATWT ;) OLTL is ok (I like Todd and Echo) but not my show.

ABC and OLTL must think they can somehow gain some ex-ATWT viewers considering the hiring of TC, TD, RH and Zimmer from GL. OLTL already has a large cast and these actors aren't really needed. If anything, I could see OLTL fan getting a bit annoyed by their show getting taken over. 'Vets' only get so much airtime and Zimmer will, no doubt, hog time from Vicky and Dorian. I get she was on the show 25 years ago but doubt viewers missed her. KMH would have been great but pretty sure she has already moved west. I would think Cady McClain would have been a better choice than TC considering a lot of AMC viewers watch OLTL.

On another note, does CBS really think Maura West will boost Y&R ratings? Most ATWT viewers tuned in for Y&R and just watched the entire lineup. Also, she is a bad fit for Diane. Geez, you'd think ATWT was a hit considering how in demand all of these people are. Even Pissy and Goutman have found work. Maybe CBS should have just kept the show on air if they planned to hold so much of the cast and crew.

I'm even more shocked by CBS and Y&R picking up MW, PL and Goutman. Firstly, Maura still seems very Carly during her interactions with men and I can't stand her talking about 'Jack'. Have this bad feeling Goutman will become EP and the show will center around 'Diane Jenkins'. Goutman over used West on ATWT to save money (just as GL did with Reva) and could see Y&R adopting a similar production model. While Victor has always been the 'star' he has never been over used in the same manner. When Newman goes public, I'll bet Diane's 'self-made' comapny ends up on top. It is at that point that Y&R will become, as ATWT, the Maura West show.

Ekkk--Chris Goutman...Ekkk

The only way for OLTL to make real gains is to use the CBS 'big tent' plan. ABC would be smart to aim adverts at the older demos and maybe pick up a real ATWT vet such as CP or LH. CBS plays it smart by going for the biggest amount of viewers of all ages groups and that is why Y&R gets over 5 million viewers and why the network in now, in all demos, number one. Frons chased away so many viewers from GH and silly PGP copied the plan.

Been watching the 2pm Y&R repeats and bet anything they will rate higher than ATWT. The contrast in writing, production values and just over all quality is stunning. I'm somewhat suprised CBS allowed such low-cost messes as ATWT and GL on the network.
