An August 1987 Evening Magazine episode. At around 34 minutes there's a segment on the upcoming season of Falcon Crest. They interview various  cast, including the expected tiptoeing around Jane Wyman's diva ways as well as a great deal of talk about sexing the show up and on relying so heavily on guest stars - essentially saying that viewers watch to see old faces popping in rather than the rest. Lorenzo Lamas even sings The Love Boat theme just to make the point clear. The funniest part for me is probably Lauren Hutton saying flat out she was happy to take the job because of an impending strike and she knew she could just get in and out as fast as she could.

I Knew Abby Dalton's Birthday (in This case her would be 90th) was in August but apparently it already happened, anyway some nice clips have been posted, including one from the original Pilot! Which is great considering there was nearly no Julia scenes on Youtube

After doing a second/third rewatch of Falconn Crest I just have to laugh/mourn over what FC could have been vs what it could have been.

Mark Snow’s score for seasons 6-7’ was the definite highlight. Snow of course cemented his career with the X-Files.

Yet every episode had to have Angela and David making callous pointless remarks.

Falcon Crest sucks especially after Season 5 and the whole Pamela Lynch face lift thing.

Who the heck cares about Morgan Fairchild, Erin Jones and her sister lol

I agree. All the ingredients were there for a great show (the family/business conflicts, the soap elements, the acting talent) but the execution squandered the potential. I have a feeling that network interference and backstage drama played a big part in that.

I feel like the acting was the major failure.

Lorenzo Lamas, Robert Foxworth, and Billy Moses were very wooden as the male leads.  Margaret Ladd and Abby Dalton lacked any sense of nuance and made a mockery of mental health issues, even though their characters were never given proper diagnoses.  Dana Sparks and Jamie Rose were underdeveloped.  And Cliff Robertson and Gregory Harrison seemed to sleep their way through scenes.

The guest stars were laughable, from Gina Lolabrigida still trying to be sexy in her older years to Lana Turner whose face could no longer move, Cesar Romero still playing his character from Batman, and the well-past-their-prime Leslie Caron, Ursula Andreas, and Rod Taylor.  I would excuse Kim Novak, who was still an intriguing actress that was able to carry a very convoluted plot on her back.

So, we're left with David Selby who was sexy, but could only really play intense, especially when compared Bill Devane. Susan Sullivan and Jane Wyman who were the obvious highlights.  Laura Johnson and Ana Alicia who had the capacity to be the leads, but got the raw end of the stick.  And Chao-li who never got his due.

In comparison to Knots, or even Dallas, whose actors were able captivate an audience regardless of the writing, FC was just a cast of good looking people.

The show was so Directionless, On Season 1 and early season 2 Emma was Cleary mentally ill, Suddenly after a short stay she was "normal", Julia's Insanity was justified by her several disappointments and frustrations, Abby did a decent Job, but Julia's Insanity was Suddenly diminished when she resurrected on Season 4, Jamie's Vicky had an Enormous Potential that was never fully explored, Dana Had a totally different vibe and while they seemed to try to explore her, she too fell through miserably, I blame The Production Problems and changes in Executives, The show never had a determined direction, it seemed to change every season

    • Today reminded me as to why I’m a little disappointed in the name that the new Pope chose

Luckily, EJ and Johnny, and pretty much every other character saved today’s episode.  I didn’t expect Javi to be the one to save Sarah though, and I don’t mind it at all, because if it means that Javi is finally going to get his own identity/character, away from his douchy bf, I’m all for it. Javi’s scenes would’ve been a lot better had it not been for him. EJ and Johnny were the best part of today. Their conversation hit a lot of important beats and I’m so looking forward to seeing them play out. And now that EJ knows that Johnny is going to work for Xander, that opens up another dynamic to their storyline and to the Kiriakis family storylines as well. Tying them all together could be really good. There are so many story possibilities that can come out of this. And I thought Carson Boatman did a pretty good job again too.  I also liked that Johnny was there to comfort Chanel after everything that happened with Sarah. They’re so good together. But I do have mixed feelings about Chanel possibly forgiving Johnny so quickly. Hopefully, the question that she asked him at the end of today leads to more conflict for the two of them.  And yeah, still no changes in Alex’s character lol
    • Awesome, thanks so much for taking the time to grab the episode. I had a quick review of your rip because I was curious why it was 700MB and 30 minutes. The first 10 minutes of the episode is 3169 (opening credits at 5 minutes and again at 15 minutes). The full HD version of ep.3170 is on YouTube channel:

    • That's a name I haven't heard in a minute. Thanks!
    • Well, since I'm still up unexpected past my growing-into-it bedtime. lol.   I finally got to rewatch Monday's. I even rewatched Friday's to take it all in. Now that we got the reveal and hit the climax of the SilkPress Sheila storyline, now we get to watch the aftermath and/or turns that come with its climax. So far, so good. Friday left us with three cliffhangers. And what I found surprising was how I felt about them over a rewatch.    I know some of you all felt a way about the dialogue during Kat vs Eva. I remember liking it more the first time around and it was nice for them to have these scenes to establish more of a frenemy vibe for them going forward. That still held up. But I found myself agreeing with you all about that dialogue. lol. Still, it was nice to have both of their POVs.   Second up was Silk Press Sheila vs the Duprees. And I was happy to get a brief spat with Dani in there. But the rest standouts for me was Anita and Martin. Haters can hate and given the tail end of the episode, I will agree to a fault, but Brandon has impressed and he was on fire on Monday and had great subtle work on Friday. And that subtle work made it all the better. Like I believe I said when I was watching...BC has a much better grip on his character and seems to be realizing what his tics are so has started to be able to know when to turn it up and when to dial it down. And for the most part (emphasis on most), he got that. Meanwhile, TT was giving fierceness, and I was here for every minute of it. Her reading SilkPress. Her being quip about it. Her 'BE STILL.' Ooooo she had a chokehold on me as Anita gave what I was expecting her to SilkPress. WORTH THE WAIT. I also loved Vernon's CHOOSE SILENCE. I wonder though if SilkPress will figure out Martin's condition from her observing Anita and Vernon with him.   And speaking of worth it...Oooo YES Nicole vs Ted was worth totally worth it. Oooooo I knew DD would nail it, and it was all so well done. The fight between the part of Nicole who is a therapist vs Nicole as a woman who wants to express how she feels. And being so angry. And how there would be moments when it would shoot out of her. And how she would restrain herself. But how she felt she should not be restrain. Just the levels of processing and layers. And DD played it all so well. I do wish Maurice gave just a little bit more, but overall, I thought he did a good job even if it was just Ted coming across as a deadbeat and not at all redeemable. And Kat being there for her mother was so beautiful.   Minority, but I love the montage though yes, it did run a little long. Given how the Duprees like to bond (and also as I mentioned from my own very recent family experiences), it did not seem out of place to me.     That said...let's see how the aftermath worked in today's episode. Overall. Cuz RC can be hit or miss.
    • I wonder whose brilliant (

) idea it was to do an almost complete rip-off of the "who killed Tom King"-storyline. That's some quality style writing right there.....
    • The show is done. It got canceled at the end of January. https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2025/02/fox-first-run-cancels-dish-nation-person-place-or-thing-pictionary-759232
