Carl,Leslie Denniston wasn't the ballerina that was involved with Bob. That was Dana, played by Deborah Hobart, who went on to play Amy Dudley on AW.

Leslie's character Karen was an earlier romance for Bob(78). Karen had some sort of shady connections. I think that Karen was dumped when Hunt/Ellis took over from the Soderbergs.

When Steven Markle was cast as Mel on OLTL.SOW stated that Robert Foxworth, Gil Gerard and Kent McCord (Adam 12) were considered for the role. I wonder if this was just a wish list and those actors were not actually involved at any stage. It seems unlikely that Robert Foxworth in particular would be interested in soaps.

Oh that's right, I forgot - I had assumed Leslie was involved with Bob on ATWT.

I can't see most of those guys being interested in playing Mel.

Catherine Hicks said in an interview over in the RH thread that she had auditioned for the role of GL's Holly before she was cast as Faith.

I know, right? And YET... I'm a little intrigued. Roya Megnot would have been a better Erica than Lisa Peluso, but in both cases it would have looked like little girls playing dress up, both too young. I used to think Anna Stuart would make for a good temp Erica when she was still on AW but I don't necessarily agree with that anymore. Her energy is perfect for women like Mary Smythe.

I saw a few primetime mentions in the original post so I thought I would include these:

Ryan Gosling told Entertainment Weekly that he audtioned numerous times for Dawson's Creek but was always turned down. He didn't mention specifically what roles. I also remember reading that Josh Harnett had audtion for Dawson's Creek.

According To Eileen Fulton (Lisa, ATWT) During Her Apperance On SoapCentralLive She Met With Her Agent In 1960 & On That Day He Got A Call From ATWT. They Wanted To See Another One Of His Clients, Lois Smith To Read For Lisa.

The Agent Told ATWT That Lois Smith Was About To Have a Baby & He Suggested Eileen. Eileen Went In & Got The Role

Can You Imagine Lois Smith Who was last on Daytime as Besty Cramer On OLTL in 2003-04 and recurs as Tom's mother on Desperate Housewives playing Lisa?

Wow! Cool thread. Just now seeing this. That list is quite interesting.

Anyway, about Lois Smith. I'm glad she didn't do ATWT. Her character on Somerset is what got me really hooked on the "stories" Somerset used come on late in the afternoon here in NYC in the early 70's and Lois play Zoe and when I got home from school I would ask my sister is Zoe on. I was upset when turned into a killer. Lois Smith is one of the finest character actress around and I'm glad she endured all these years.

She is a fine actress, a friend of mine did Trip to Bountiful with her. I didn't realize her soap career went that far back. I also have trouble imagining her as glamorous Lisa, and for some reson, the ages (in my mind at least, to lazy to actually look it up  ) don't seem to match up.

She did this taped very soap-looking production of Tennessee Williams' "Talk to Me Like the Rain and Let Me Listen" for NY PBS which was mid-'70s, I guess a little after her Somerset gig. And this isn't a soap "They Almost Became", but Meryl Streep was the original choice for Lois' role as the kinda kooky gardener in Minority Report with Tom Cruise.

I will never NOT want to see Lois' work on Somerset. I have seen little of her work, just some of her OLTL run. I guess I should find more of her stuff. For a while I mostly just knew her from a negative Pauline Kael review.

Speaking of ATWT, Donna Wandrey, the wooden but striking Roxanne Drew of Dark Shadows, auditioned to be Rachel on AW after Robin Strasser left, I believe the first time, not sure. They told her she was too nice. She went out shopping and when she checked her service, her agent told her ATWT wanted her to read for Barbara.

    • You're probably right. They may have just wanted edits of certain characters. Hopefully the rest is around.

I'm wondering if there were bits cut from this footage, because to me it seems that may be the case. At 11:23, Laurie tells her psychiatrist that the bar phoned and told her Mark got into a fight and needs to be picked up. It starts to fade to the next scene, you hear some different music begin and get cut off between the static, and where you'd expect to see the aftermath of the fight, we cut back to a later scene of Laurie in bed worrying about what's happening. The credits at the end also show that more than Mark, Laurie and Dr. Northcote should have been in this episode. Another character, Brody, played by Ed Setrakian, is mentioned but not shown. If this is the case, perhaps the original fan who saved this episode has the additional scenes.
    • Anyway… It’s a shame that the video that depicted Leticia’s death was removed from YT.

    • Ms. Phelps holds a BFA in directing from Carnegie Mellon University, awarded in 1972. At a time when women were underrepresented in directing programs, she was one of the few women in her graduating class. To suggest that she possessed no further talents than completely changing the style of music used on soaps seems like a vast underestimate when one reads her online biography through an objective lens. I guess that I should be more clever than to constantly blame misogyny for these misguided interpretations of her management style.  But, I'll never comprehend why fans unquestionably align their opinions even years after fact. Post-modernism, and the ability to reinterpret context through the study of history, seems to elude this conversation.

    • This is 100% correct.  It was even on the nightly news where the US Government would not let the cast and crew travel to Egypt because it was deemed not safe.  The Achille Lauro hijacking took place on October 7, 1985, when the Italian ocean liner MS Achille Lauro was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel. The location shoot was probably scheduled to be filmed in mid-October to air throughout November with a two week tape to air date.  Remember on the show they did some in studio scenes doubling for Egypt before shifting the action to Arizona.  It was an awkward end to a truly bizarre storyline.

New episode from late 1973 or early 1974!
    • Coronation Street had a very good story where one of the characters befriended a man who she later learned had been involved in her husband's death - when told right it can be very powerful (not like AMC trying to make it a romance). ATWT almost had a big fire in mid-1994, so this seemed to be a "thing" with P&G at the time. I guess it fits the disaster backstage atmosphere.
    •   @jmgaw did not refer to Luke and Laura. Throughout 78 GH's ratings continued to rise as AW's fell. That turnaround was getting a lot of attention in the soap press with Scotty/Laura, Rick/Leslie/Monica etc . So the 90 min decision was a reaction to that. I guess the thinking was that 60 min expansion had worked so starting AW a half hour before might keep viewers from switching to GH at 3pm. I don't think anybody really thought it would work. The most sensible solution would have been to expand The Doctors and hope for a GH like turnaround, but for reasons unknown TD never went to an hour.
