OLTL: Discussion for the week November 2

Bravo OLTL on a job well done. Perhaps one of the most well written stories involving gays in years. I loved the little montgage at the end. Andrew's speech at the end really touched characters across the canvas, and seeing straight and gay couples exchange kisses with their loved ones, care free, really was a monumental sight to see occuring in Angel Square.

They probably didn't advertise because they didn't want controversy. Or too much controversy. It's easier to advertise with the more established characters, and the more established themes (even if most of the characters who are most established at the moment tend to suck).

The story isn't realistic (although if it had been realistic it probably would have been called boring), which has bothered me, but if they really went into a story of the fight for gay marriage and the hostility and ugliness which many of these campaigns involve, it would never get on the air.

I think they made David Bo's son because it tied up the heir story without any strings left. It also gives more of the material David gets on most of his returns, tragicomedy. I think they keep this going with Dorian and David because they know Dorian won't be allowed any permanent love interest anyway.

Fantastic episode today!! I'm glad Fish/Kyle didn't get married - it would've been way too fast in an already fast storyline. I hope Nick doesn't leave. I thought the actor was decent enough to keep him around for a triangle.

It really was good. Melissa Salmons wrote the script.

I love this duo too. They have such a big contrast to each other and yet they are funny together.

Agreed!! This has been coming for months and months now and I'm glad they finally admitted their true feelings for each other.

Yeah, that ending montage was superb.

If avoidance of controversy was the reasoning for not advertising then this network has truly given up on it's lineup because they had a chance to get some real mainstream buzz with this event, which coincides with the beginning of November sweeps, and they let it pass. What a shame because they could have gone full out and tooted the upcoming 40th of AMC, this and J. Jackson's return to GH and boosted the entire lineup.

As for the "storyline" itself, ITA with your comments. My observations were solely on the production values. Having all of those extras made the event seem real to me.

As for David and Bo, I think leaving him Asa's son would have been much better if they wanted a no strings attached story. Every time David comes back to town he interact with Bo looking for approval and acceptance because he's needy and to David, Bo is a better person then he is. If they had left him Asa's son: 1. There could never be a relationship because Asa's already passed on 2. Asa makes David look like the Virgin Mary and 3. David and the Buch's never liked each other. He could have easily taken his share of the fortune and left them behind. Then they would have accomplished a no strings story perfectly tied up. Now all we get is a mess every 6 months when the always talented Mr. Watkins graces us with his presence.

I agree about the extras. I was talking more about some of the comments about the story being unrealistic, which it is, although most of the other stories on the show now are much more unrealistic (not even soap realistic).

ABC doesn't care about OLTL. If they did they would probably still not promote a gay wedding, although you'd think they might have done more in the gay press, or with GLAAD. How pathetic that GLAAD did cheerlead for the Rianca fiasco on AMC.

I think in the long run the David/Bo connection does more of what the show wants because it pushes the buttons the show likes to push with David. The Buchanans can look down on him. He can try to win them over.

I couldnt agree more.

Much love and respect to OLTL for even attempting to do something no other soap wold do. However, does it really have an impact with two newbies with no ties to the canvas? I doubt it. Not to mention it was rushed and i still dont feel like we know much about Kyle or Fish as characters let alone as a couple.

I am sure that within months they will be gone or props. Sad.

This is my other issue, where is the opposing side to this? why is it all so over the top?

Ugh I just found the tone and pace of this whole gay story leading to the wedding... weird. Off. Even stuff like having Roxie kiss Jackie Hoffman and havingher smile... I dunno I love humour on my soaps but they didn't know if they were playing this real or completely cartoon and none of it worked. I like the characters of Fish and (especially) Kyle a lot, probably more for the actors than writing, but even Kyle bein gSOOO cold to Fish all of a sudden and then on the day of the wedding being dumping his fiance (who I never even liked, but still!) and declaring his love for Fish (I am glad they didn't get married as I feared) jsut felt so random to me. it was like Carlivati wrote the broad strokes of this story but the essential stuff in between was missing for me.

I think they decided to take the risk with rewriting major history because this way they can move forward with Tea being a stronger presence in Todd's life. This can be used to further the idea that Tea is Todd's soulmate and that his family is actually her family. Having an overaged child who pouts a lot and makes smart remarks, which apparently somehow makes her a young Todd (otherwise I don't want to know what Tea means by this child being a young Todd), is a way to push their dynamic more.

I'm fine with Todd and Tea being together, but I wish the show were more secure in this great love. To have Elijah sit around with the holy headcase and tell her how great she and Todd are together, I don't see the purpose. All these characters who have every reason to be disgusted or at least apathetic about this romance of the ages seem to end up joining the flock. This relationship always seems to be more about other people telling us how great it is than about the actual relationship itself.

I think Kyle suddenly deciding to give up on Fish and make a commitment with Nick was rushed, but him suddenly deciding not to go through with it was probably one of the more well-constructed parts of the storyline for me. They did build up his anxieties for a week or two up to the wedding.

The story had a strange tone, but I think that's true for a lot of OLTL. There's always a weird tonal issue, especially in regards to comedy and camp mixed with drama. I thought it worked a little better the past few days than on some other days.

thats not a problem bc this happens all the time on soaps and thats the nature of SORASing. The biggest issue is the second point you bring up and that Jack is about 5-6 years younger than she is when he should be older. Makes even less sense since the story in which Danielle was concieved is constantly being referenced on the show and thats when Ross kidnapped Jack as a baby. That is such a huge hole in the story and I cant beleive they actually wrote that. They need to stop mentioning the kidnapping bc they keep drawing attention to the writing screw up

    • I was watching some August 1987 episodes and they brought back so many memories. I had some thoughts: Lisa and Jamie were so dull. Lisa was such a nothing character. It boggles my mind that so much story was centered around her in such a short amount of time. Joanna Going is a talented actress, but the material was just not there.  It was so good to see Wallingford and Mitch again. I know there was talk about Felicia a while back, but these episodes reminded me how integral Felicia was for the show.  Sally Spencer was done so dirty. She is turning in superb performances in an icky storyline. I wish she had stuck around longer. She has chemistry with everyone. The McKinnons should have lasted longer. Spencer had some strong stuff with Stephen Schnetzer and Mary Alexander. AW waster such a talented actress by getting rid of her. Justice for Cheryl too. I also missed Ed Fry when he left. Sandra Ferguson was a star from the moment she came on. She was charismatic and just popped. She had immediate chemistry with RKK and blended in well with Wyndham and Watson. I'd forgotten about the teenage Matthew.  I have no memory of Peggy Lazarus. She must not have lasted long. Was the original plan for John that he was going to turn out to be the twins' real father?      
    • If the new and improved copies that @rsclassicfanforever has uploaded can be manually moved into the "by month, by year" folders, that would be awesome. I personally don't think it's necessary to keep the older versions (which either have Dutch subtitles hard coded on them, or are lesser in picture quality). That's a lot of valuable drive space that could be cleared. Just my view but can appreciate others may feel differently. The structure had been by month by year previously, so I think it would be easier to conform to that, where so much prior work to get it to that format has already been done. Hopefully you can "drag and drop" so the new copies are in the right month/year? Re Clips, I never look at them now we pretty much have the episodes in full. Appreciate others may use, however. Thanks for all your hard work here @BoldRestless!
    • Oh yes defintely, Josh Griffith repeats and repeats the same storylines.
    • Isnt’t this storyline similar to the Cameron Kirsten situation though? Sharon thought she killed him. He ended up being alive and Sharon was being tormented with thinking she was seeing his face everywhere and that’s how we got that iconic scene with her and Nikki in the sewers.   I understand in Mariah’s case this is different circumstances but it does seem like a play on that whole thing. Maybe I’m wrong. I just wish if they were going to make any character follow in Sharon’s foot steps it would be Faith. Mariah wasn’t even raised by her, and her personality is different. I would expect her to take a different path. I understand I could be completely jumping ahead because the storyline hasn’t even played out yet but we’ll see. 
    • Thanks again @Paul Raven Monica was completely without redeeming qualities at this point. I always found the whole Monica = Carly narrative regressive, as I don't think shows comparing characters so heavily is ever a great idea, but she's actually worse than Carly was. Was it the Pollocks who had Leslie have a miscarriage?  Giving her a child, especially by rape, was not a good idea, but a part of me wishes they'd committed to it just to see what story it might have had in later years.
    • @janea4old Your detailed explanation and delving into the psychology and motivations is no doubt the opposite of what we will see onscreeen. As @ranger1rg stated we will get a few scenes and some sketchy explanations. Like the adoption of Aria, most of it will take place off screen.
    • I'm suddenly fearful that DAYS is going to pull a Flowers-for-Algernon stunt and Bo's progress will be reversed.  While @te. is stuck on Abe's tiny bedroom, I can't stop thinking of the size of Bo's huge hospital room.
    • Okay, why are Paulina and Abe sleeping like that?!  I'd take a screen grab if I wasn't lazy, but come on.
    • All caught up on this week's episodes. Deidre Hall has done the best work of her career with this series of episodes. That is her tribute to Drake. Every acting choice has been perfect. From her reaction the moment John flatlined, to her snapping at Abe and Paulina (what a smart, realistic writing choice), to her grief playing the text message over and over. Josh Taylor did the best work of his career in the scene with Kayla telling him John had died. Everything about his facial expression, voice, pronunciation, everything was so different from what he usually does. He was overcome with the emotion of it and any of his acting tics disappeared. Peter Reckell and Kristian Alfonso were great. One thing I noticed with the flashbacks of John/Marlena and Bo/Hope is that Bo and Hope are constantly smiling at each other. The chemistry those two have cannot be faked. It's clear the writing team decided to clean up Bo and Hope and give fans a happy ending for them, neatly wrapped up in a bow. The juxtaposition of Bo and Hope reclaiming their happiness thanks to John, while Marlena is dealt life's harshest blow from John's sacrifice, was another great writing choice. Marlena even saying that to Eric, that she is paying for Bo's recovery with John's life, was such smart writing. Susan Seaforth Hayes was used very effectively between the two storylines. I really enjoyed the scene of Kate talking to Philip, calmly stating that she will make Xander pay. Overall, the show should be lining these episodes up for the Emmys and Deidre should be carefully choosing her scenes for her own reel. She deserves a Best Actress Emmy for this work. The first time I have felt that way about her work. Peter Reckell should submit himself for Guest for the scenes where he found out Victor is dead because he was genuinely heartbreaking. Josh Taylor should throw his name down for Supporting Actor for his scenes. The show deserves a Writing and Best Show for what they've done with the episodes around John and Bo. It was heavy stuff and I feel for the actors. I am so impressed with what they did.

Commander Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Both are highly intelligent, but rarely understood by the outside world. Both aim only to evolve, to be better than what they are. And both belong to the NFL. Data, who is actually Brent Spiner, was born February 2, 1949 in Houston, TX. He was the son of Sylvia, a corporate VP and Jack, a furniture store owner. When Jack suddenly died, Sylvia was left to raise infant Brent and his brother alone. She eventually remarried a man named Sol Mintz. Although Mintz adopted Brent, Brent changed his last name back to Spiner when he became a professional actor. Spiner attended Bellaire High School in Houston and was heavily involved in baseball and the drama club, in addition to being a member of the NFL. While on the speech team, he gained 143 points and even earned the title of Dramatic Interpretation Champion in at the 1967 National Tournament (the same year actress Shelley Long won Oratory). After his success in high school, Spiner moved on to the University of Houston and began performing in local theatre in Houston. Eventually he dropped out of college to move to New York City and try his acting luck there. While in New York, Spiner gained more stage acting experience, performing in several Broadway and Off-Broadway plays, including The Three Musketeers and Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George. In 1984, Spiner decided to try film acting and moved again, this time to LA, where he appeared in several pilots and made-for-TV movies. He then auditioned for the up-and-coming show Star Trek: The Next Generation. Spiner himself was never a fan of science fiction or of the original Star Trek, but figured the show would soon be cancelled and he desperately needed the money. Starting in 1987, Spiner played Data for 15 years, during the show’s 7 seasons and the four feature films that followed. Even when the show was cancelled in 1994, Spiner’s career as a performer barely paused. He is most remembered for his role in Independence Day as Dr. Okun, the somewhat awkward chief scientist of Area 51 who is attacked and killed by his alien subjects. He has also made appearances on Law & Order, Friends, Dude, Where’s My Car?, I Am Sam, and The Aviator. Spiner returned to the theatre and appeared in the Broadway revival 1776 as John Adams. Unlike most of his co-stars, Spiner is not very active in the Star Trek convention scene. He has made a few appearances, but overall his lack of interest in science fiction gets the best of him. However, he still regards Patrick Stewart and LeVar Burton as two of his best friends. One of the challenges forensicators face is finding the human element in their events; to not be robotic and detached, but simply themselves. It is this crucial element that separates the good from the great. As the character Data, Spiner sums up the NFL experience the best: “If being human is not simply a matter of being born flesh and blood – if it is instead a way of thinking, acting, and feeling, then I am hopeful that one day I will discover my own humanity.
