Here is a god explanation to your question, from TV BY THE NUMBERS

Nielsen Says 2.5 Million Households Without TV, I Say Don’t Jump To Conclusions About Ratings Effects

Posted on 17 June 2009 by Bill Gorman

In its latest study out today, Nielsen estimates that 2.5 million US households cannot receive digital television signals and so are without TV entirely.

You can debate the validity of that number, it does fly in the face of the relatively few calls to FCC call centers set up to receive calls about the analog shut off, but correct or not, I don’t think there’s any other numbers out there to compare it with.

What I find interesting are the stories that are beginning to pop up about how ratings have or have not been effected by the analog shut off.

I’m not sure you can draw any conclusions about ratings effects at this point because of the way Nielsen measures ratings.

Nielsen gathers its national ratings data from approximately 20,000 households equipped with people meters. While Nielsen does its best to mirror the US population demographically, it seems to me that simply being a Nielsen “family” implies a certain level of self selection.

If you have enough of a clue to manage being a Nielsen family, that implies to me that you’re less likely to have been been caught by surprise by the analog shut off, and are more likely than average to be prepared.

The folks who got caught by the cut off are the least aware or the most procrastinating or disadvantaged in some other way that would likely keep them off people meters as well. So, I won’t be drawing any conclusions about how the ratings have or haven’t been effected by the shut off for awhile (maybe a long while), until there’s a lot more information

All this Neilsen talk and recount talk...

I love ratings and quantification, obviously. But what a dreadful business, to be in Neilsen's shoes. It is very, very easy to make errors here...and it is very easy to fix them. But the ratings have become so politicized (because of the revenue implications) that their poor statisticians must require diapers before releasing every little number.

The switch from analog to digital is a one time thing and ABC caught the error. Every time Nielsen has the occasional screw up, it is made into a big deal. Anyone who does statistics knows that errors can occur, but the fact is that they rarely do occur, especially when a company like Nielsen has teams of statisticians working on the numbers.

GH has really turned it around and I think when GH does well ABC Daytime does well, the same can be said for AMC as its the lead-in show and its ironic that ever since AMC struggled around 2006 that's when the rest of the lineup suffered so I think AMC has to get back on board here for the lineup.

I can't believe DAYS is losing Chelsea as that might be a small blow for them.

As for GL it seems like their waiting on ATWT to end its run over on CBS so they could get their package deal in place.

    • It just reinforces everything that's wrong with this couple and this show, doesn't it? It's not romantic, it's not sexy, it's not anything. Instead, I end up thinking about the set -- how long it took to put up even more greenery to remind us we're in the park, that the weather in WI must be really mild to produce those full-bloom roses, and how adorable that they've added tables so people can carry Panera there to eat.
    • Yeah... Joss needs to die. So sick of her. And it would be so nice if the professor did it. Btw, ruining Emma is not gonna make people like Joss. It's just gonna make us like Emma more. Luckily, I enjoyed the rest of the episode. And yes, Gio did look hot

I was totally here for Brook Lynn vs. Lulu, even though I'm Team Brook Lynn. This confrontation definitely need to happen and I hope it's the first of many. I'm curious to see what's going to happen from here. I don't like Ric all that much, but he was kickin' ass today. Hopefully, this leads to Willow getting custody. I did feel bad for Sasha though. I'm still loving how we have to hate Boyle even though he's 100% correct  And yeah, I still don't know what they're doing with Lucky and Liz but I liked their scenes today. They're so good together, and honestly, they should become like Dante and Sam: a couple with no conflict lol I think they've earned their happily ever after.
    • For real. Can she at least go to Orphey Genes on lunch break? There's so much mess that she hasnt seen and we missed her commentary
    • They had a brief affair before Sonni left to take a job out of state. He liked that she knew nothing about his past and she liked that he knew nothing about hers. I don't think they built much more story around them. As I believe someone mentioned, Forbes was not interested in staying on soaps.
    • But he's the only one of John's kids who can carry on his legacy

    • Yes and they were a sister group to the Primes which was a group that had members who went on to become Temptations. The Primettes are portrayed to a small extent in the Temptations biopic.
    • These pictures from the May 20 episode didn't inspire you? (sarcasm)

    • I think it’s high time we get Shanice out of just being at the hospital.
    • Darn it, Nosy Nurse! You gave SilkPress too much info.   Oh, lord...here comes Dani.   And I have an appointment so I will have to finish later.

And THIS is why I love this show. I was hoping they would play this beat cuz of...Lulu.   It has not disappointed so far at all.
