CBS cancels Guiding Light

I will always maintain that the format, the daily serialized home and family or story, is immortal. It goes back centuries, maybe longer. It's how it is utilized and presented. The vehicle, the process may change; the appeal of the serial never will. Children, mothers, college students will always be lonely, will always want to turn on the TV and find a family or a town if it's presented with humanity and intelligence. If they do it on iTunes or YouTube or Hulu next, they'll still do it, whether the show is on at 12 or 2. It is up to the stewards of the format to help it navigate. The problem is, most of the stewards just want to be working someone else.

I'm thinking March 31 must have been some internal CBS deadline for the budgets for the next fiscal year. Seriously.

But honestly, when would be a good time? I think maybe the TVWeek story sort of forced the hand...

Yep. End of the first quarter.

You're right there wouldn't have been a "good" time but releasing the news on April Fools just prolongs the agony of the reality. It's like ripping the bandaid off slowly. Twice.

I am so sorry guys- i was never a GL watcher for more than a few episodes at a time, but damn if that show does not have some amazing episodes on Youtube. To see what it was, and what it is now..ughh.. I really hope that CBS will let the show look like a soap for the last month.. Were all the sets destroyed? Does GL even have a studio anymore?

And regarding Gina- She would be an IDIOT to return to OLTL as Kelly if she was offered Victoria on Y&R. Y&R and B&B are the only soaps to be on these days in terms of security and bosses who -generally- treat their casts well.

I hope GL goes out on a high note.

It's not too late to let Faye Dunaway play Alex for the last couple months!

You think I'm joking.

Don't go stealin my ideas Vee! I've been pimpin that one since WoST circa 2002 when SOW broke the news of Collins' casting.:P

Damn, how tasteless. Couldn't they have at least waited until April, 2. A Friday no less.

I'm betting Ellen Wheeler read the TVWeek article, left like 15 voicemails on Barbara Bloom's phone, 16 messages with her assistant, and then finally, Bloom returned her messages, determined not to wait another day to deliver the horrifying news.

If this is one big April Fools Scam to get more publicity for the show, then these people are sick fuckers.

"New home" is always such an appealing, optimistic idea. It has never worked before.

But maybe if "new home" were taken as the impetus to create the kind of program Vee talks about....it could be different this time. If some "new home" were willing to play, why not give it a shot?

That said, in this economy....

I remember when I lived in Germany, Die Springfield Story was a fairly big deal. I wonder if international appeal is out there, at all, anymore?

Damn this thread has more viewers than GL.

(A little black humor, sorry.)

I felt Wheeler's dialogue staff could be very, very good. The problem is the stories often sucked, and the writers would put all their eggs in one basket and fail to do anything else. Hey, let's build a story around Ed Bauer and Roger's son, and fail to secure Peter Simon. Let's destroy our relationship with Grant Aleksander and then spend years teasing Phillip's return. Failing all that, let's just put the entire show on Jonathan. That'll never get old! I was sick of him long before his last appearance.

I found it compulsively watchable when Jonathan was on in '04-06, but the writing got stale and mean-spirited.

I was never a big Johnathan and Tammy fan, but I really believe they brought GL a few more years on the air. I'll never understand their popularity, but they gave this show some serious buzz.

Such a sad turn of events. CBS and P&G have to share equally here in the blame. CBS long ago left GL on it's own by not attaching it to other soaps timewise. Why did it air at 10 am here in NYC when all the other soaps start at 12:30? Why didn't they have it follow ATWT or B&B? P&G and their shoddy production is the reason why the show deserved to be canceled. Shaky cameras, heads cut off, close ups on nothing, bad sound... The Real World had better production values. I just don't know why CBS didn't try reducing it to 30 mins and farming it out to a sister network or station? Why not GL on the CW three nights a week? Sorry GL watchers, the loss of a show is no fun.

I know GL runs in Italy on one of Berlusconi's channels, it's known as Sentieri. But B&B rules there like no other.
