Many of the show's most prominent characters had left. The show struggled at bringing in new characters -- Kevin Wicks and his kids were especially unpopular. The stories were seen as being uninvolving or, like Grant Mitchell's affair with Jane Beale, bizarre. Sonia Fowler suddenly becoming a lesbian was also very unpopular with viewers. They also made decisions which infuriated longtime fans, like killing off Kathy Beale (offcamera) to bring in her and Phil's annoying son, Ben.

Vanessa will be back, she has a lot of scenes with Tanya when she returns. I don't know about Harry.

We're also at almost at the very end of the episodes Dominic Treadwell-Collins oversaw as Series Story Producer. The storylines he approved will be playing out for some time more to come, but soon his stamp on the day to day episode development, structure, and pacing will be gone.

You do too!

HAAH I remember the Sonia lesbian story, which even as a non longtime viewer I could kinda see as not working...

I remember a British friend once said that Eastenders and Corrie never are both great at the same time, when one is on fire the other seems to be in the pits. I'm sure she was generalizing--but any truth to that?

I can see what they mean. I do think the late 80s were pretty decent for Corrie (not fantastic but decent), while the late 80s were Eastenders peak. The early 90s were decent years for Eastenders and for Corrie. 1996 was seen as a weak time for both shows, with Corrie going through radical changes in 1997 and Eastenders in 1998-99. In recent years it's been more of a back and forth. 1999-2002 were when EE went up and up and up, while Corrie struggled. 2003-2006 were seen as decent to strong years for Corrie, the opposite for EE. EE went up and Corrie went down in 2007. Corrie had a good year overall in 2008, while EE's 2008 wasn't that fantastic. I don't think 2009 was good for either show but it was better for Eastenders, in terms of ratings and in some of the stories getting a buzz and a big response. Corrie collapsed in 2009. Honestly I can't even watch Corrie at the moment and haven't in a few months, I got turned off with Nick and with Tina/Graeme and when one of my favorites, Ashley, was fired.

There was some controversy over this as he said on Twitter he was done with the show (in response to a thread criticizing him at DS, I think). I do think some of these stories still seem like him. I think the show is decent at the moment but a lot of fans seem to be getting fed up so I hope they will improve more on plotting and some of the characterizations. I do think some of the complaints are off -- I don't really have a problem with most of the exits and I think the longing for a "big exit" and the disappointment when you don't get one is a big example of what is wrong with soaps today. It becomes hey what if this person was killed off? What if that person died? Well, then it wouldn't be a big exit.

Good ratings for last night's episode.

19:30- EastEnders: 8.86m (41.7%)

22:00- EastEnders (BBC3): 1.22m (6.1%)

While I can see where the OTT stuff was annoying I hope some of those viewers will stay around, I think Kat's return has real potential and I think she's fit back in well, even if the pregnancy reveal was contrived.

The cheapness of that show never ceases to amaze me. That theme tune :o Jason Manford is kind of cute. Was he wearing that shirt in honor of Alfie?

It was nice to hear all that laughing and fun, and it seems genuine. The clip looked good, so hopefully it will be. I love her giving away what everyone already knew and then being horrified she might lose her job.

Shane Richie kind of looks like an older David Tennant with that eye job.

Shane Ritchie teased about a big story on This Morning that has the possibility of being a slow burn story than could run for as much as 2 years...

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/soaps/s2/eastenders/news/a278381/shane-richie-teases-biggest-soap-story.html

Maybe it's the show's first babyswitch with Kat/Ronnie, which was predicted in this thread? Or something else...

Ronnie has been acting like Archie lately, so I wouldn't put it past her, I guess the end result of Kat beating the sh!t out of Ronnie could be appealing, but it could be something else totally, so who knows...

Or maybe just pure hyperbole from Shane, which wouldn't be a surprise...

    • Angry Dante was hot; sorry, but I'm not going to pretend it wasn't awesome seeing Dominic Zamprogna act his ass off in a way that was not crying.
    • Thanks, interesting and so believable (no Lonatrat or Clones...)Instead of the Lewis family he should have made the Oil family Granger...even if the audience didn't remember that one off character it would have been interesting to tie it into the fictional GL world.
    • Dante needs stick removed from his butt
    • When you bring up what I like to call "Shapiro's Folly" you think Dano's acting choices mattered? I ask because I don't think so. As far as I could tell almost universally the ABC fans hated the very idea of her being on all 4 shows! And, BTW, the headwriters also hated it, at least according to comments made by Passanante. But, it is not hard to imagine that they'd feel that way. And, I agreed. If she wanted success she should have planted "Rae" on one & given up her idea of branding, or whatever it was that she was after.
    • Okay, well her reasons were that she had a mandate to reduce the size of the cast & she had another mandate to make the cast overall younger, so her reason for picking Donna to off was because she was too old.  So, is that what you understand? Or are you thinking of something else? Which if so, I would be delighted to hear about it!  She had arbitrarily picked 50 as the age people needed to be younger than.  And, that is why she got rid of both Bridget & Spencer Harrison.  And, getting rid of Bridget was another of her horrible ideas.  Why do you refer to her as the Face of the Show? Don't feel bad. I am a major Cass fan & I don't remember him with Donna either, LOL! Can we say forgettable? And, yes, Lila was the most last minute of last minutes!!!!
    • This is AWESOME, thank you for taking the time to post this! My first thought: My memory is a lot better than I thought it was, LOL! The first episode I clearly remember watching had a scene of Ed confronting Holly about Christina's paternity. He lamented how wonderful things had been over Christmas, so looks like I started watching the show early 1976. The only thing puzzling me is where is Evie? I thought she was around BEFORE Rita got involved with Tim, but maybe that's one gap in my memory. It makes Rita look slightly better--in that case, she didn't seduce Tim knowing her sister had a crush on him.
    • Oh, well.  At least he can cry into his hoodie.
    • Sorry, just realized I'd somehow lost a whole paragraph in that last post.
    • Thanks @Paul Raven  They should have brought Billy back in the early '90s for more drama with Hart and Blake. Maybe Blake would have gotten involved with him to try to ruin him in Roger's eyes, but realize under his sweet nature, Billy was a player himself.
    • Checked. Taggert last date, Wed, 7-19-23, so a long dadgummed time ago.
