Days: July 2023 Discussion Thread
I'm just so glad it's over! They're still going to have to play out Abe's status. At the bare minimum he's going to be confused. If he is over his amnesia then it is just going to be explaining the kidnapping & hostage situation. The actress who plays Jada is so good at all the cop stuff. From entering with gun drawn to reading of Miranda rights, she just nails it all. Yeah, finally Steph lit into Alex. When she speaks up, she makes the right points. Alex the jerk who is in therapy. What an effin joke he is.

I love this board so much!
@Errol & @Toups I really hate y'all got hit by all that crapola overnight!! Awful. What do you even call that kind of attack? Y'all got rid of it so fast that it must not be serious as much as it is a nuisance. Is that so? I guess there's scammers everywhere.

At a fan event PAS said that Frank had stockpiled to the point where he was covered unless it was going to be a 5 month strike. I believe initially everyone was naturally hoping for a 3 month strike.

I've always been very dubious of trying to get someone to your timeslot by using a different timeslot. I get that it can work as awareness advertising but I don't think that's saying much. I'm not sure primetime specials get eyeballs to daytime. About the end, my precious "Little Show That Could" became one hot mess. I wish they'd had an opportunity to do a real intentional ending. Maybe they could have given a nod to everywhere they'd been. Instead they were stuck with the last that happened to get written.

Yeah, I know. The "challenge" lacked imagination. A real challenge would be to cleanly excise misogyny!

I was just challenged to cut the cast of GH by 10 on #SoapTwitter. I think I'd like to do the same on DAYS. Li, Alex, Rafe, Talia, Stephanie, Jerry, Whitley, Stefan, Leo, Gwen. Annoyed that it wasn't employees so I could cut Ron. Join me?

General Hospital: July 2023 Discussion Thread
I was just challenged to cut the cast by 10 on #SoapTwitter. Initially I was annoyed because I want to cut Chris & Dan & they're not cast. But, I coped. Gregory, Mason, Gladys, Dr. Montague, Finn, Dex, Esme, Curtis, Baby Ace & Violet. Anyone?

I love this board so much!
I didn't care for SOC. I think the mods are too heavy-handed. And, they only want current story content. As a result of that the classic soap topics are just dead. The GL Buzz Board & Media Domain, the two boards known far & wide, infamous for what? Fighting! I didn't go to either one so that is not something I can verify. But is it their reps. I was active on Usenet, rec.arts.tv.soaps, which we called RATS. I was the Asst. Mgr. on the Delphi Soap Opera Forum.

I know that at GL 2007-2008 Jill Lorie Hurst is listed as "Story Producer" as opposed to all her other credits which are all writer's titles. I also know she was considered a Producer. But I am sure she & Ellen were writing the show, maybe even in the evenings in Ellen's kitchen.

Here's the data for that special day, hour long PC, between AMC & GH. That one day, Dec. 30 it got a 2.9 but it was not averaged in with the regular ratings. But that is quite a jump from 1.7 or 1.8 to 2.9! We have the example of nestling a half hour soap on CBS & now this. The details that poster had given me were way off but the gist of the matter was on point.

Port Charles Discussion Thread
My general impression near the end was that they were going to go big with vampires, that the vampire soap had new fans but that it wasn't necessarily keeping the old fans. That, of course, would not get them a net improvement in the ratings.

Okay, it was just something someone said that I had no verification of. I wonder what the ratings were. Thank you for clarifying.

I am halfway through Susan Lucci's All My Life: A Memoir (Promo E-Books) As you probably know Susan Lucci has been a part of daytime since AMC debuted in 1970. In all of that time she never made critical remarks about anyone or anything in the business. Until the 2011 epilogue to her memoir ALL MY LIFE when she shared about Brian Frons & the cancellation of AMC. "An iconic show was losing out to greed ... If Brian Frons could show his bosses that he could save the network 40 percent ... he could keep his job even if the rest of us lost ours." He'd told her that April that he was replacing AMC with a food talk show THE CHEW because it was cheaper to produce. Now, this was after he had moved production from NYC to LA to save money. Many cast members took awful hits selling their house on one coast to move to the other. "I watched Brian Frons' decisions destroy the production of our show and the lives of people on both sides of the country." Besides her comments about what he did she took issue with his seeming to be positively gleeful at the idea of the change. And, to sum up, she said that he "has what, for me, is that fatal combination of ignorance and arrogance."

I was a huge fan of PC - all of it with the possible exception of the Angels arc where I had trouble with suspending my disbelief enough. Naturally during the course of the show I had a Minority Rapport because apparently I am the only fan of Kevin & Eve. That's just how big a Jon Lindstrom fan I am. As you probably recall that was not a real relationship. They were only together in Lucy's dream. (And some fans talk about PC as if the whole show itself was only a dream.) The history of half hour shows near midday if they are the lead soap is pretty bad in terms of clearances, ratings, longevity, etc. and ultimate success or failure. I've been told that one week it was broadcast nestled between AMC & OLTL & that the ratings went from a 2.7 to a 3.8. Here is Kevin & Eve's wedding.

Ratings from the 80's
I believe in 1985 that CBS swept the Emmys. Y&R Best Show, GL Zimmer Best Actress, GL Larry Gates Best Support, Y&R Beth Maitland Best Support, ATWT Brian Bloom Young Male, Y&R Tracey E. Bregman Ingenue & GL Directing. That's 7. ABC only won 2 for AMC Darnell Williams Lead Actor & Best Writing.

I saw on #SoapTwitter: CelebratingTheSoaps @celebratesoaps· 15h General Hospital News: Fans Want The Show’s Producers To Give Haley Pullos Another Chance Now, that is not what I'm seeing. Fans want HP to be held accountable for her actions & fans hope she'll turn her life around. Fans just want the Davis women to all make sense as their characters & in story. Many different ideas about resting Molly or recast #4 or how to go forward with this Molly, etc. Then, a few do seem to hope that HP will return after whatever happens.

2023: The Directors and Writers Thread
AMC has an interesting history about strike writers in that it was scab writers who killed off Jesse & later other, different scab writers brought him back to life, writing a tale where he was never dead, just had faked his death. In her autobiography Agnes was very expressive about watching her show & them killing off Jesse & how horrified she was. Personally, it amazes me that she wasn't consulted about what the scabs were writing. This might be a good place to talk about writer's style of working. Irna Phillips talked out loud all of the parts & action & thoughts, using different voices for different characters. Her secretary took it all down in her own note hand & then typed it up. We know this from several different accounts. Both of her proteges did the same thing. Agnes spoke everything into a Dictaphone & someone typed it from that. We know this from her autobiography. Bill Bell did the same thing only he himself typed it up after on his IBM Selectric. We know this from an interview with Michelle Stafford earlier this year. Jamey Giddens does the same. I discovered this in communication with him on #SoapTwitter this year. Of course, I presume he types it up on a computer. He does do different voices. He is a huge fan of Irna's so I assume that is why he does this. And, yes, including Jamey here does make this an example of "One of these things does not fit with the others."

2023: The Directors and Writers Thread
Pete Lemay did all of the Writing but had Paul Rauch as EP of course, so close but no cigar. I suspect back in the day there were other writers who did it all themselves but never had EP duties. For that reason I'm betting this is a first. Further, thinking about this, I wonder if Bill Bell ever did this at Y&R. I simply do not know how much he might've done as a Showrunner. And, today, I don't know how much actual EP work JG does.

@Paul Raven Thank you so much! Easy mistake to make, thinking in terms of Vintage content versus Current content, instead of the way it's set up here.
