I haven't seen any of Chris Brooks or Peggy rape storyline but from what I remember of Cricket date rape storyline, Bill Bell covered the physical/emotional effects and the medical/legal aspects. Also Cricket date rape was a summer social issue storyline, so that played a big part in the story being told responsibly. I agree that Christine and Michael should not have been in each other's orbit romantically after the sexual harassment and attempted rape a decade earlier. That was Jack Smith doing. I doubt Bill Bell would ever have gone that route.

We all know second half of 1986 to end of 1989 Cricket ate the show. I will give LLB credit for improving as an actress during the date rape storyline. If you recall during the Entertainment Tonight Y&R 50th anniversary special, LLB commented that Bill Bell wanted to tell the date rape story "properly". I got the impression LLB was taking a swipe at how other soaps told rape storylines irresponsibly in the 1980s. I wonder what TL issues were w/ Jack storylines near the end. Perhaps he sensed Bill Bell was losing interest in the Abbotts or maybe TL had issues w/ Ed Scott. Remember that Cricket eating the show overlaps w/ Ed Scott becoming EP. Also 1987-1989 it seemed Bill Bell was losing interest in the Abbotts w/ Traci role being reduced and then the Ashley and Jack recasts which threw off the balance in the family. Terry Lester will forever be Jack to me. His Jack was such a layered character and all those layers got lost w/ the recast. I always point out that 1989 was wonky w/ the females. Cricket ate the show, Cassandra was the show's new pet, and the rest of the main females (Jill, Katherine, Nikki, Ashley, Traci, Lauren, Nina, Leanna) were given second and third tier storylines. Cassandra becoming the show's new pet overlaps w/ MTS pregnancy leave, ED departure w/o a proper exit storyline, Bill Bell rushing into recasting Ashley, BE Ashley floundering until the Brad/Traci/Ashley triangle, and Nikki floundering from MTS return until the storyline w/ PB Jack.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Exactly. As we all know, the following season we saw a sophomore slaughtering and a sophomore surprise while the primetime soaps tanked.

Great magazine cover @Soapsuds 1984/85 was expected to be the biggest Dallas vs. Dynasty battle ever, but little did we know that a rookie hit was waiting in the wings to blow up and another rookie hit was waiting in the wings to shock the world.

Here's what happened on the primetime soaps and two rookie hits the week of September 24-30, 1984. Dallas - Killer at Large (season 8 premiere): Bobby is blinded by a bullet wound. An attempt is made on J.R.'s life. Cliff strikes oil. J.R. realizes the killer is still at large. Falcon Crest - Requiem (season 4 premiere): The families are united in tragedy as survivors of the plane crash mourn the dead. A new threat to the winery arises. The Cosby Show - Goodbye, Mr. Fish (episode 2): Cliff arranges a funeral ceremony for Rudy's goldfish. Dynasty - Disappearance (season 5 premiere): Jeff goes after Fallon and finds her car wrecked from a collision with a truck, but Fallon is nowhere to be found. Alexis has to pay two million dollars bail. Dominique's husband, Brady Lloyd, comes to Denver. Murder, She Wrote - The Murder of Sherlock Holmes (series premiere): Former English teacher Jessica Fletcher travels to New York to celebrate the success of her debut novel. But when an unwanted guest is murdered by gunfire at a costume party, she wishes she'd stayed home. No Knots Landing on September 27, 1984.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
@soapfan770 You posted the 1988/89 opening. The Cosby Show was still #1 but its dominance was threatened by the breakout success of Roseanne. 1989/90 The Cosby Show and Roseanne tied for #1. 1990/91 Cheers was #1 and The Cosby Show dropped to 5th. I loved the first four seasons of The Cosby Show. Something felt off during season 5 (then again 1988/89 alot of shows felt off due to after effects of the writers strike and changing times), season 6 I started losing interest (mainly due to Olivia being a replacement for Rudy. In 1989 Keshia Knight Pulliam was 10 years old so her cute kid days had met their natural end and Raven was 4 years old.), and the final two seasons I didn't watch at all in real time except for the series finale (I did see bits and pieces of the final two seasons in reruns. Cousin Pam was a replacement for both Denise (her role was reduced then eliminated) and Vanessa (her role was reduced) plus an attempt to attract the urban audience that was gravitating to the Fox shows.)

I love how the little girl is giving big bad Larry Hagman the stare down.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Yes, it did. If it wasn't for the breakout success of The Cosby Show, who knows if Family Ties, Cheers, and Night Court would have found the audiences that they eventually did. NBC Thursday dominated primetime for the better part of 20 years, from the start of The Cosby Show until the end of Friends.

TV One Celebrates the 40th Anniversary of The Cosby Show Tomorrow (September 20) is the 40th anniversary of The Cosby Show premiere. It was such a big part of my childhood but its conflicting to celebrate the anniversary when considering what we know about it. Despite everything, the impact The Cosby Show had in both television history and popular culture is still being felt today.

Murder, She Wrote
@Khan There were three episodes that I think were homages (or could have been shade) to other CBS dramas: A Very Good Year for Murder (season 4), Northern Explosion (season 10), Crimson Harvest (season 11).
-
Murder, She Wrote
“I mean, who would have thought a group of twenty-something young people sitting around all day long discussing their sexuality would turn out to be a top TV show?” Oh, the shade by Jessica/Angela. I love it. I can't recall Murder, She Wrote shading the new hotness Miami Vice (although Angela herself shaded Miami Vice by referring to it as Miami Heat) or cool and trendy dramas like Moonlighting and L.A. Law.

BOLD: New Forrester cast & another returning
The only role of Barbara Crampton that matters is Y&R Leanna. Her runs on GL (granted I didn't watch in real time, I only saw part of it online) and B&B were thankless and wasted her talent.
-
Y&R: Amy Lewis Returning
This seems so random. Do not give Josh Griffith ideas :shudder

Murder, She Wrote
Season 12 also shaded both Friends and CBS. I will always point out my love for the episode that shaded Friends. Yeah, it may seem angry to some, but after seeing Angela Lansbury cry on 60 Minutes I totally get why those episodes happened. It bears repeating that Murder, She Wrote deserved to have a proper final season farewell on Angela's terms after all she did for CBS primetime. Les Moonves will forever be on my s--- list for the way he sabotaged Murder, She Wrote and his notorious "when I got to CBS" comment. Les Moonves is the reason Angela cried on 60 Minutes. There is a special place in hell for him for that alone.

@Soapsuds Since you posted Islands in the Stream, what did you think of this sampling of it?

DAYS: Will classic episodes ever be available?
Sony knows that if Bill Bell Days, supercouple Days, and Reilly Days are available to watch online, nobody will watch the current episodes.
