Loving/The City Discussion Thread
Cranston is one of those folks who absolutely never fails to mention his soap work and chime in wherever possible. He even did that reunion Zoom. He didn't have to show up in the Deadline comments section of all places. What a mensch. I also did not know that per Cranston, the actors' nickname for the show in those years re: all the high turnover and firings was "Leaving." One for the ages.

The next week preview is wild. I love that moment with Anita. They need to let Joey and Leslie fúck sooner or later. Old Marcel is one thing but she has higher ambitions, and Trisha has chemistry with everyone up to and including JL. Or at least give me more of Leslie and Vanessa scheming together when Joey inevitably goes down.

It is. I think Alexis had this wrapped up with the Tracy bluff tbh. I thought it was one of the strongest episodes the show has had in a long while, and one of the stronger weeks. Provided they don't have Trina and Kai blow the whistle before the verdict drops, which would kill some of the power of this reveal IMO and risk closing too many future story avenues.

People were fooled because they believe the person who goes on trial on a soap is never the culprit. That's the beauty of it for me, but it only fully works if she gets away with it. The writers also played it very close to the vest on Willow and her motivations for months since the shooting, which made me even more suspicious. I think EON did a story like this once (Winter Austen), but I haven't watched it and can't speak to the similarities.

I thought based on the promos that the party scenes would be another well-meaning but somewhat cringe scene of Dupree togetherness. (Remember when Martin, Smitty and the kids all put their hands together and cried 'the Richardsons!') But they were sweet and cute, and I was so glad they gave Anita a moment alone amidst the festivities to still be solemn and afraid. They could've done a bit more with those scenes in fact. They reminded me a bit of some of the Ward family stuff MVJ did on GH.

That should be her exit story AFAIC, in a few years. Once backed into a corner she plays the cancer card. Then after she's exposed or about to be, you finally get Who Killed Willow Quartermaine? What amuses me is how some fans seem to still demand this story end, that Drew or Willow be off the show, etc. But they don't stop watching. These characters are the prime movers (along with the new Michael) and have been for a long time. If not for Mulcahey shaking some of this show from its stasis, we probably wouldn't be here. It's these love/hate characters that keep topping themselves, and the fact that Willow's trajectory has begun to mirror Annie Dutton's from GL (or Kristen's from DAYS, albeit not as extreme), that the show is in a stable place. People are outraged by these characters' behavior but they can't stop watching. That's soaps. Some viewers have forgotten that (or in the case of BTG, you have new viewers learning it for the first time re: Leslie, etc). Note as well that she gloved up. This was premeditated. I wonder if Michael actually did try to frame her with the gun, or if they both tried to frame each other and it ended up back at Liz's.

I still don't think much of JJ's performance but I'll keep my mind open. They do seem to be planning to use SPOILER Jordi Vilasuso's lab tech Grayson Perez with Ashley, and I'm willing to see what happens if Ashley finally surprises me. I'm just glad if they're leaving her thing with Andre in the rearview.

They're already doing that, which I find to be a waste of time IMO. Jacinda is a fairly bland dayplayer and a story Michael has had before. Michael is an emerging leading man and needs a strong, new range of leading lady contract options. GH needs to commit to the next generation, and to their credit they are increasingly making moves towards it.

ChelseaKat does need to be a much bigger thing, as does Dani's business. Same with the nascent Martin/Bill political storyline. I think MM has hinted that Smitty in the workplace will become a bigger storyline soon, which makes me happy. I did love the cotillion drama yesterday. That's how soaps can and should educate for their viewers, as opposed to the more random speechifying the show often likes to engage in for so many other moments. There was real specificity to the discussion. I also loved Andre and Dani being domestic in the kitchen today!

I mean, Ezra is a toad, period. I do think DC gave a bit of nuance to those moments with Genie where Boyle warned her about how Sidwell could destroy lives and he's seen it before - I suppose you could tell a little tragic yarn of a story about this once-idealistic man who is now kind of a sad, pathetic joke. But I don't think there need be much more to him. I think if this Sidwell, etc. saga goes on much longer it is only a matter of time before Boyle ends up like Judge Herron. (I initially thought the scene with Dante and Nathan where Nathan mishandled evidence a few days ago, a clear tipoff, was about the Herron case. It wasn't, but it did admittedly make me wonder if Nathan executed the judge for Sidwell.)
