Dorothy Lyman is coming back.

In January, 1990, her syndicated TV series “Mama’s Family” was canceled. Her 3-year-old labor of love, A Directors’ Theatre, had always been a money-loser, and she was finally forced to pull the plug last year. After she spent a month directing and appearing in the NBC soap opera “Generations,” it too was canceled. In February, her radical staging of “Hedda Gabler”--with Hedda as an Asian, drug-addicted bisexual--was roundly panned at East West Players.

Count Lyman down, but not out. Poised to direct a production of Denis Spedaliere’s “Vicious” (which opened this weekend at The Complex in Hollywood), the 44-year-old actress-director makes no bones about the emotional toll the past few years have taken.

“When I started the theater I thought it was going to become self-supporting really quick,” she said wryly. “I thought everyone was going to say, ‘Hey, this is just what we need in Hollywood: another tiny little theater that does new plays and doesn’t care if they’re commercial as long as they’re interesting.’ ” She sighed. “You put all this money and effort into doing theater, and there are 12 people in the audience on Thursday or Sunday. It’s just heartbreaking.”

Consequently, for this theatrical outing, Lyman has come on strictly as a hired gun (“I promised my husband I wouldn’t spend any more of my money producing theater”), directing a project with a proven track record--specifically, her own successful 1984 production at 2nd Stage. “Denis is my favorite playwright,” she said. “And this is the only play that’s ever come across my desk that need nothing done to it: no rewrites, no cuts or changes. ‘Vicious’ was perfect.”

Likewise, Spedaliere is a big fan of Lyman’s. “I consider Dorothy my director,” said the playwright, in town last weekend to look in on rehearsals. “I’ve only come back to this because she’s directing. I’ve had other offers to do the show, but I turned them down. Dorothy is really a writer’s director. She respects the written word; her concern is always for the play.”

The drug-soaked tale of ill-fated rocker Sid Vicious and his girlfriend-manager Nancy Spungeon (also the subject of Alex Cox’s film “Sid and Nancy”) is undeniably dark, set in a seedy hotel room the night of Spungeon’s 1979 death. “At first,” Lyman said, “I thought, ‘I already directed this play. I still remember every frame of it, every line. What’s the challenge?’ But it’s been endlessly fascinating to see how my perspective has changed.”

Before, she said, “I used to think Sid and Nancy were very romantic; now I think they’re kind of sad. Punks were a lot like the hippies of my time, so I think I related a lot to these kids, ‘cause I’d had a kind of funky past in New York in the late ‘60s. When this case first came out, I was fascinated, read everything about it--and related very personally to the story. But I’ve changed a lot since I first directed it. I’ve had another kid, been through my career ups and downs.”

It’s not a subject Lyman ducks. “I am, in my humble opinion, underemployed as an actress--after 22 years and a couple of Emmy awards,” she said, eyeing the twin statues she won playing Opal Gardner on ABC’s soap “All My Children.” (She good-humoredly refers to the daytime series--in which she appeared from 1981 to 1983--as “All My Kids” or “All My Paychecks.”)

“It’s not easy for me to get a job as an actress or a director--which is why I end up having to produce projects myself most of the time,” added Lyman, who’s now prepping to direct a Mary Ramos piece at Theatre/Theater and who teaches at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. “I am not overwhelmed with offers. Yes, writers want me. But it’s difficult to find people who’re going to pony up the dough for you to experiment with a script that may or may not have legs.”

It was after closing her theater--”and licking my wounds for a couple of months”--that Lyman began pursuing her Directors Guild card last year. “I observed on ‘Generations’ from August to October,” she said, “then they gave me a shot at directing in early November.” One day she heard about a character they were planning to introduce, a hard-boiled businesswoman named Rebecca Whitmore. “I told the producer, ‘That sounds like me.’

“He said, ‘You don’t want to go on a soap.’ I said, ‘Hey, I have three children, and we like to eat. If there’s a job on a soap, I’m not too proud to take it.’ ” With the show’s subsequent cancellation, Lyman found herself back at square one. “It took me four months to get into that position--on a show where the producer was an old friend of mine and knew what I was worth,” she said glumly. “I’ve got to get more ambitious, ‘cause nothing happens if you sit home and wait for your agent to call. I should just develop a half-hour sitcom with a great part for a 44-year-old woman.”

Much of the actress’s current restlessness is no doubt a response to years of steady, plentiful work.

Just months after debuting on “All My Children,” Lyman was approached by “AMC” fan Carol Burnett to co-star in her new series “Mama’s Family.” For the next 1 1/2 years, Lyman taped “AMC” in New York Mondays through Wednesdays, caught the red-eye to Los Angeles on Wednesday nights, rehearsed “Mama’s Family” Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, taped Sundays, caught a plane back to New York, was picked up at the airport each Monday morning and driven straight to the “AMC” set.

“It wasn’t so bad,” she said lightly. “You fly first class--and happily, I can sleep on airplanes.” At the same time, Lyman was also balancing an intercontinental marriage to Frenchman Vincent Malle, whose producing credits include brother Louis’ films “My Dinner With Andre” and “Atlantic City.” In 1975, during a 1 1/2-year hiatus from “Mama’s Family,” she gave birth to their son Jackson.

Born in Minneapolis to what she calls “perfectly ordinary parents”--a stockbroker and a housewife--Lyman discovered acting at 15, when she played a small part in her brother’s church-basement production of “The Skin of Our Teeth.” “I came out and said my first line, and everybody laughed. It was like this great warm feeling of approval, and I thought, ‘Well, I’ve got to have some more of that in my life.’ So I really became an actress at 15, and never wavered from that.”

Two years into studies at Sarah Lawrence College, she quit and headed for New York; there she quickly became a member of Joseph Chaikin’s legendary Open Theatre, playing in “America Hurrah” off-Broadway: “I was also lucky to get a little part on the soap ‘Search for Tomorrow,’ making what seemed like an enormous amount of money then--$90 a week.” More stage work followed (including an abortive London run of “Shrivings” with John Gielgud and Wendy Hiller), and a series of soaps, including a 1976-80 stint on “Another World.”

While she was pursuing her career, Lyman also had two children (her daughter’s now 19, her son 16); when she divorced her first husband, they stayed with him. It’s a whole different story with her 5 1/2-year-old. “When you have kids late in life, I think you’re a more patient parent,” the actress said. “When I had the big kids, I was young and ambitious, and it all seemed like a big interruption. Now I wish I’d had six kids, ‘cause frankly, it’s not the roles you’ve played that are sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner with you or having you over at Christmastime.”

It's not like the checked out Duell left great shoes to fill. I think Gibson didn't bring a lot of energy to Noah, but 1/2 of that I blame on JG's inability to write for young characters. Hopefully he can hold his own with the vets he'll be working toe to toe with.

Thalmus Rasulala (born Jack Crowder; November 15, 1939 – October 9, 1991) was a respected and recognized American actor with a long career in theater, television, and films. Noted for starring roles in blaxploitation films, he was also an original cast member of ABC's soap opera One Life to Live from its premiere in 1968 until he left the show in 1970.

Born in Miami, Florida and a graduate of the University of Redlands, he appeared in many films and made guest appearances on television shows. He also attended some classes at Shaw University, a historically black university in Raleigh, North Carolina in the late 1970s. Notable blaxploitation film roles include Sidney Lord Jones in "Cool Breeze" (1972), Dr. Gordon Thomas in "Blacula" (1972) and Robert Daniels in "Willie Dynamite" (1974); he also was the assistant director of "The Slams" (1973). On television, he was known as Skeeter Matthews on "Sanford and Son", Ned in "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman", Lt. Jack Neal on "One Life to Live", Bill Thomas (Raj and Dee's father) on "What's Happening!", and Omoro Kinte (Kunta Kinte's father) in "Roots". He also appeared on the first-season episode of "Saturday Night Live" hosted by Richard Pryor, as a priest in the "Exorcist II" sketch.

On the Broadway stage, under his original name Jack Crowder, Rasulala appeared as Cornelius Hackl in the hit musical "Hello, Dolly!". He was a leading member of the all-black cast that starred Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway. The Bailey company opened on Broadway on November 12, 1967 and was recorded by RCA Victor for a best-selling cast album in which Rasulala is featured in several songs.

He also appeared on "Perry Mason", "Mannix", "The Twilight Zone", "All in the Family", "The Jeffersons", "Good Times", "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "The Sophisticated Gents". His film roles include "Cornbread, Earl and Me" (1975), "Mr. Ricco" (1975), "Bucktown" (1975), "The Last Hard Men" (1976), "For Us the Living: The Medgar Evers Story" (1983), "The Boss' Wife" (1986), and "New Jack City" (1991).

Mr. Rasulala died of a heart attack on October 9, 1991, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His last film role was as General Afir in "Mom and Dad Save the World". He died shortly after completing his scenes, and the film, released a year after his death, is dedicated to his memory. He died two days before actor Redd Foxx, who also died of a heart attack and with whom he guest-starred on Sanford & Son.

Domini Blythe, Stratford Festival Actress, Dies at 63Robert Simonson, Playbill.com – Fri Dec 17, 5:47 pm ET

Domini Blythe, a member of the Stratford Festival's acting company for 11 seasons over a 30-year period between 1976 and 2006, died of lung cancer on Dec. 15 in Montreal. She was 63.

Ms. Blythe was born in England in 1947. She met Richard Monette — former Stratford artistic director — in England as they performed in the erotic revue Oh! Calcutta! in 1970. Said Stratford general director Antoni Cimolino, "Richard was wise enough to ensure it was a life-long friendship."

In 1972, she emigrated to Canada and spent three seasons at Ontario's Shaw Festival before Monette brought her to Stratford.

Ms. Blythe, known as one of the more beautiful actresses of her generation, first joined the festival company in 1976 to play leading roles in The Way of the World, The Merchant of Venice and Antony and Cleopatra. In 1978, she appeared in the Festival's first production of Titus Andronicus. More recently, she was Maria to William Hutt's Feste in Stratford's 2001 production of Twelfth Night.

She last appeared on the Stratford stage in 2006 when she played Mistress Quickly in Henry VI Part 1, directed by Monette, and that same year she staged her one-woman show Fanny Kemble at the Studio Theatre. Most recently she appeared as Judge Evelyn Rowe in the 2010 television movie "The Ties that Bind."

Blythe said she identified with Kemble because they both were British-born actresses who had spent most of their careers in North America.

Other Stratford roles included Gwendolen in The Importance of Being Earnest; the title role in Miss Julie; Rosaline in Love's Labour's Lost; Desdemona in Othello; Margery Pinchwife in The Country Wife; Elmire in Tartuffe; Gertrude in Hamlet; Liz Essendine in Present Laughter; and Goneril in King Lear opposite Christopher Plummer. She repeated the latter part in her sole Broadway appearance.

Ms. Blythe is survived by her husband, Jean Beaudin; her father, Richard Blythe; her brother, Ben Blythe, sister-in-law Andrea Schlieker and their two children Lily and Phinn. A funeral service will be announced at a later date.

The Dog in the Manger features the return of Michael Hayden, last seen in Michael Kahn’s Sweet Bird of Youth and the Shakespeare Theatre Company debut of Michelle Hurd. The two actors offer insight on working with director Jonathan Munby, favorite roles and those who have inspired their careers.

Michael Hayden:
Most recent role?
Father and husband. Before that Denton in the Roundabout Underground production of Language of Trees.

Favorite Role?
That's a hard one. Billy in Carousel, Hal in Henry IV.

Pre-performance ritual?
At some point in the day drill my lines. Warm up my voice. Pray. Beyond that, I keep it pretty loose. Each part is different. Some need quiet, some need loud music. I look for ways to be ready, but not comfortable. Ready to take the first step. Or if not ready, than at least willing.   

This is you second production with STC, why did you want to return?
That's easy. Michael Kahn and his staff produce great work. Doing Sweet Bird of Youth with Michael was a pure joy from beginning to end. I had loved Michael as an acting teacher at Juilliard and I loved him as a director. Also, there are very few places where one can do great classical roles. The Shakespeare Theatre is one of them and I hope to keep coming back.

Why were you interested in playing Teodoro?
I have never done a Lope de Vega play, though I had seen some of his other works while studying in Spain. This was a play I knew nothing about. I was drawn to it because it was funny, sexy, incredibly human in the see saw passions of the characters, and, of course, the language. I think the translation is brilliant and I hope we do it justice. As for Teodoro, we need to get to know each other better before I can talk much about him.
 
This is your first production with Jonathan Munby. What intrigued you about his work?
In all honesty, I knew nothing of his work before I was called about this project. But after speaking with him for only a few minutes, I was certain that I wanted to work with him. He was able to articulate his vision for the play with such clarity. He has a long list of great work in England, my second home, and I'm grateful that he was willing to take a risk with me without having seen any of my work. We are lucky to have him.

Most influential person in your theatre career?
I stand on a lot of shoulders when I do my work, but I suppose the most influential person in my career, as well as my life, is Elizabeth, my wife. Any work of art, at least to me, is a work of the heart. She has mine and therefore has a presence in all I do.

Michelle Hurd:
Most recent role?
I most recently played Laurel in Gossip Girl. It was fun for me as I often play cops and lawyers and doctors and this time I had the opportunity to play a mean fashionista ... and wear cute outfits and heels.

Favorite role?
This is always a hard question. I sure enjoyed the entire experience of playing Jessie Brewster in The Violet Hour. It was great working with Richard Greenberg and actors Mario Cantone and Hamish Linklater—great, generous guys. But I feel very at home on a set or onstage so it's hard to narrow it down.

Pre-performance rituals?
I'm old school. I like to do some kind of relaxation exercise and a vocal warm up.

This is your first production with STC, why were you interested in working here?
I have always heard wonderful things about STC.  It is a highly respected place and the space is beautiful. I want to work with talented, motivated, interesting people that inspire and I've found them here at STC and in Jonathan.

Why were you interested in playing Diana?
What's not of interest with Diana? She's an incredibly complex, exciting character. There is a lot on her shoulders in the construction of the play—that responsibility is scary and a welcome challenge. I've always been attracted to high text and period plays, but seldom have the opportunity to exercise that. I'm looking forward to it.

This is your first production with Jonathan Munby. What intrigued you about his work?
The man himself. He is one of the major reasons that I wanted to do this play. As soon as I met him, I felt an instant collaborative energy, respect and a desire to do better. That makes for a fulfilling process.

Who was the most influential person in your theatre career?
My parents. They met onstage in a play. I grew up watching my Dad on Broadway, in films. My sisters act, dance, even choreograph stage combat. Truly, theater is like the sixth member of our family. The arts have always been part of our lives, our livelihoods. I know nothing else. I even met my husband onstage. Circular, isn't it?

When I attempted to add Javi Hernandez to Al Calderon's profile, it refused to close the edit, It said that the post uses terms that are not allowed. Why won't it allow the edit and/ or post. It's just lists of soaps, tv shows, movies and theater roles.
