Characters that ATE their Soaps
As The World Turns lost a number of talented actors that way. I’m not even talking about the Marisa Tomei’s or the Julianne Moores who were never going to renew their contracts, but other actors who went on to do commercials, something that gave them more flexibility. I understand that a character might be in heavy storyline but when that story wraps, give that character a rest or light work, give an underutilized actor something to do by giving their character a front burner story. Sometimes ATWT had overlapping stories and one character might be involved in both. It was entertaining but you know that actor had to be exhausted, especially since one or both storylines featured some heavy material. Miscarriages and murders, in the space of a week.

Characters that ATE their Soaps
Has anyone mentioned Cricket on Y&R yet? It wasn’t scenery chewing, it was more like storylines. There was a time when Cricket seemed to be everywhere. I don’t blame the actress per se, it was really the writing that inserted the character into nearly every conceivable scenario, especially if the story line as an active one.

Saving face. I guess they’re allowing him to spin the demotion. It’s definitely not a promotion. Streaming is an entirely different universe. The ad revenue is lower, so I have a hard time imagining how Todd could keep his network broadcast pay grade when streaming doesn’t generate the same ad buying rates. I see NBC News Now thumbnails on YouTube and I almost never click on, I always ignore, to the point that I forget it even exists.

That final point in the match between Alcaraz and Nadal. Whoa! EDT. Autocorrect is just gonna have to get used to me typing Alcaraz, lol.

Hm, I would have to see some documented proof on a statement like that. Had that statement been made about Agnes Nixon that would have been more believable. We already know there were reports that Irna Phillips wanted a daytime soap with a majority Black cast. To be fair though, it feels like the Reagan years of the mid 1980s could have been when it felt like this push became a thing. And when Y&R became the #1 soap in the late 80s, that further cemented things. Looking back, I do think Y&R got a nice helping of PR to help that drive. Bell being the show’s creator also likely made him appealing in a way that, perhaps, the other show runners weren’t. Anyway, sorry for taking this thread off topic.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Thanks for posting that interview @Soapsuds. Scott speaks with a great deal of conviction about his nonprofit work, which was really nice to hear. I had no idea he had had a problem with alcohol at one time. As many times as I have seen him do these podcast interviews, I hear something new each time. I think he probably has enough material for a memoir or autobiography. It would be cool to see him as a series regular on a show somewhere.

The Politics Thread
It has always been my contention that CBS was the most conservative of the networks, particularly during the daytime and Y&R was the most conservative of the daytime dramas. As brilliant as WJB Sr. was in building a brand that created these shows that have endured, I must admit that I believe that him being a straight white man with a wife and children fit the ideal of who CBS wanted to make the face of their daytime serials and promoted as such.

OMG @marceline. Those ads look like the ads that those ambulance chasing law firms used to put on television. Maybe not Giuliani level lazy but it sounds like Turner ran a very poor campaign. Thanks for giving a summary.

Just as Twitter had begun to manage their obvious bot problem. This will certainly encourage a return of the Saudi bot army as well as further empower the state run bot armies of China as well as the other unsavory figures.

The way everything is just tumbling out recently, the GOP must really want Cawthorn out like yesterday. I appreciate outlets refusing to show the video. There are reports that the man is his “cousin”.

She sounds very self possessed in that interview and I do believe her when she says that, although she loved playing Samantha in the original SATC series, she’s moved on. I have seen her in other things after the original series ended and thought she was great in just about all I saw her in. While I was reading this interview, I couldn’t help but think how I would like to see her in something with her Mannequin co-star Andrew McCarthy (I know, random, right?) Maybe they could play a married couple in that sitcom she was thinking about.😉
