ARTICLE: Kevin Spirtas Concludes Current Run as Craig Wesley on ‘Days of our Lives’
With Craig’s relationship with Leo now ended after the latter’s secrets and real intentions have finally been revealed, actor Craig Spirtas concludes his latest run on “Days of our Lives” during the week of May 2 when Craig leaves town. Spirtas reprised the role in January when Craig followed Nancy (Patrika Darbo) back to Salem after she suspected he had been cheating on her with another woman. It turned out he was cheating but instead of a woman, it was with another man, later revealed as schemer Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart). Before leaving town, Nancy will try to provide comfort to her heartbroken ex on Tuesday, May 3. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, May 4, Leo will plead for another chance with Craig even while releasing a shocking article that makes Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) furious. In the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, on newsstands now, Rikaart reveals that Leo did indeed love Craig despite everything. “Leo’s really hurt and angry, and he doesn’t have the best coping skills,” the actor tells the publication. “The easy path for him is to lash out and try and make the people he feels responsible for making him suffer, suffer as well. From his perspective, too, these guys really went above and beyond to wreck things for him in a way that didn’t really feel justified.” Rikaart is referring to Sonny (Zach Tinker) and Chad working to undermine his relationship with Craig. While pleading with Craig for another chance, Rikaart notes, “We’ve seen this side of Leo before he and Craig have this heart-to-heart.” He adds, “We saw it at the wedding when he got to be pretty vulnerable with Craig after things went awry. In this moment, we do see him a bit vulnerable, again, and the honest side of Leo that he keeps hidden is a big step for Leo.” Sadly, it’s goodbye for the two despite Leo’s genuine feelings for Craig being accepted as truth. “It’s amicable … in the moment,” Rikaart teased. “Leo feels dejected and is disappointed, then it’s full steam ahead to get back at everyone who Leo feels is responsible.” And nothing is going to stop Leo from doing just that, at least not Craig who departs Salem for other opportunities. For a sneak peek at what’s about to go down, check out this week’s trailer below. ARTICLE: ‘UEFA Champions League’ Semifinals to Preempt CBS Shows on the West Coast
It’s been nearly four months since the “UEFA Champions League” soccer games began with West Coast preemptions impacting “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “Let’s Make a Deal” (on stations it regularly airs after “The Talk”), and on Wednesday, May 4, the second leg of the semifinals with a match between Real Madrid and Manchester City will do it again. More recently, the CBS shows were interrupted on the West Coast on Tuesday, April 26 and Wednesday, April 27. As has been the case since we first started reporting on the preemptions in February, the May 4 game will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. PT on CBS and via streaming service Paramount+ with a pre-game show titled “UEFA Champions League Today” airing at 2:00 p.m. ET in place of “The Talk” which will be fully preempted by the network. Only “The Price is Right” will air uninterrupted. Viewers living in markets impacted by the preemptions can keep up with the latest episodes which will be made available on the CBS App, CBS.com, and Paramount+, or check local listings for overnight airings. Note: The Tuesday, May 3 game between Villarreal and Liverpool was originally set to air on CBS but will now air exclusively on Paramount+. Thus far, every game aired on CBS since February has amassed less than a million viewers per day, a far cry from the average watching CBS’ regularly scheduled programming. “UEFA Champions League” is an annual competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations as the remaining top 16 clubs in the European tournament each vie for the Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens (aka European Cup) trophy. After a lengthy absence, actor Michael E. Knight will be back in Port Charles during the week of May 2, 2022 as Martin Grey, brother of Laura Collins (Genia Francis) and the love interest of Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring). Upon his return, Martin and Lucy are forced to defend their relationship to Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart), more specifically Martin must decide between his friendship with a Cassadine or his growing romance with the Deception powerhouse. The show’s co-head writers Dan O’Connor and Chris Van Etten, and Herring teased the plot in the current issue of Soap Opera Digest, on newsstands now. “Martin returns to Port Charles, and he must finally choose between his friendship with Valentin and his budding relationship with Lucy,” says O’Connor. “Or you could say, choose between love and money!” commented Van Etten. Meanwhile, Herring reveals how she found out Knight would be back on the canvas. “I said to Frank [Valentini, executive producer], ‘Where’s Martin?’ And he told me, ‘Oh, I think you’re gonna like it! His first show back, you throw your dress on his head!’ I said, ‘Okay! This is good!’” Storyline-wise, however, Herring shares, “I think she [Lucy] needs to know if he’ll choose being with her over being Valentin’s lawyer.” Regardless of the outcome, Herring has been enjoying her time working alongside Knight, telling Digest, “He is such a joy to work with,” and noted, “We bring so much history and I think we’re always winking at the audience – without even meaning to.” Look for Knight beginning Tuesday, May 3. While he’s best known for his portrayal as Jason Morgan on “General Hospital,” Daytime Emmy Award winner Steve Burton actually made his daytime debut as Harris Michaels on “Days of our Lives” in 1988, and that’s who he’ll be playing when he appears in “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem” (Chapter 2). In an interview with SoapHub, the actor told the publication, “Joining ‘Beyond Salem’ — the limited digital series for the peacock — has been a lot of fun and very nostalgic.” He added, “I started my daytime career on ‘Days of our Lives’ in 1988 while on a hiatus from the sitcom I was doing called ‘Out of This World’ when I was a senior in high school. It’s been really cool to reprise the character I started with, Harris Michaels. “Daytime is a small world, so I knew a lot of the cast and crew already and met some new peeps,” Burton continued. “Everyone has been so welcoming, and I am always grateful for new opportunities. Looking forward to the finished product. Stay tuned.” In November 2021, Burton exited his role as Jason Morgan on “GH” after he was let go from the soap which had implemented a vaccine mandate. “I did apply for my medical and religious exemptions and both of those were denied, which, you know, hurts. But this is also about personal freedom to me,” said the actor at the time. “I don’t think anybody should lose their livelihood over this, but with that being said, you know me, I’ll always be grateful for my time at ‘General Hospital.’ I love it there. I grew up there. I grew up with some of you, so, I’ll always be grateful.” The ABC drama series remains the only daytime drama to officially have a vaccine mandate for its cast and crew. In addition to “DAYS” and “GH,” Burton has also starred in “General Hospital: Night Shift” and “The Young and the Restless.” He’s voiced numerous characters for video games, including the “Final Fantasy” and “Kingdom Hearts” series. He played Captain Russell Keys in the TV mini-series “Taken” in 2002 and played Captain Peretz in the film “The Last Castle” alongside stars Robert Redford and James Gandolfini. Mark Ruffalo also appeared in the film which was directed by Rod Lurie. In “Out of This World,” Burton played Chris Fuller the on-again and off-again love interest of Evie Ethel Garland (Maureen Flannigan). On “Beyond Salem,” Burton joins a cast that includes returning veterans Kristian Alfonso and Peter Reckell, reprising their roles as Hope Williams Brady and Bo Brady, respectively. Also starring in the series are Deidre Hall as Dr. Marlena Evans, Drake Hogestyn as John Black, Stephen Nichols as Steve “Patch” Johnson, Mary Beth Evans as Kayla Brady Johnson, Lucas Adams as Tripp Johnson, Camila Banus as Gabi Hernandez, Victoria Konefal as Ciara Brady, Robert Scott Wilson as Ben Weston, and Remington Hoffman as Li Shin. Additional casting announcements will be made in the coming weeks and months ahead of the season premiere in July on Peacock. Jossara Jinaro – ‘Passions’ Actress Dead at 48
Brazilian-born actress Jossara Jinaro who portrayed the recurring role of Rae Thomas on the NBC daytime drama series “Passions” over several episodes from 2002-2007, and appeared as Rosa in a 2006 episode of “The Young and the Restless,” has died. She was just 48 years old. In a post on Jinaro’s official Facebook page, her husband, Matt Bogado, stated that Jinaro passed on April 27 after battling cancer. “With great sorrow, I announce the passing of my wife, Jossara Jinaro on this date, April 27, 2022. Jossara bravely fought cancer and came home to be surrounded by family,” said Bogado in the post. “Jossara was an amazing wife, mother, artist, and friend. She had the most beautiful, kind soul and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Even in her last moments, she was still fighting. She is now resting in peace and will be remembered forever. Myself, Liam, and Emrys will miss her so deeply, although we know she is in our hearts and guiding us every step of the way.” The post included a picture of Jinaro and Bogado with their two children. A public memorial service for Jinaro is expected to take place in the Bay Area at a date to be determined, Bogado shared. On “Passions,” Rae was the “strong and sexy” club owner who was involved with Simone Russell (played by Cathy Jenéen Doe), the younger daughter of Eve and T.C. Russell. Their storyline received a GLAAD nomination in 2006. Sadly, the relationship didn’t last as Rae was murdered in February 2007 before she could reveal what she knew about Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald (Galen Gering) being framed for raping Fancy Crane. The blackmailer and Rae’s murderer turned out to be Vincent Clarkson, the alter ego of Valerie Davis. James Corden made it official on the Thursday, April 28 broadcast of “The Late Late Show with James Corden” when the actor and comedian addressed the news of his departure from the venerable late night series he began hosting on March 23, 2015. He replaced Craig Ferguson who hosted the series from 2005-2014. In his monologue, he said, “I have some news of my own to share with you. Seven and a half years ago, I started hosting this show. And there is no other way to put it, it has changed my life. I love it. I love all the people that work here. I am so proud of what we’ve achieved. It’s been beyond my wildest, wildest dreams. So, I’m happy to announce today that I’ve signed a new contract, to carry on hosting “The Late Late Show.” The audience cheered with excitement only for Corden to then drop the news that he agreed only to a one-year extension which will be his last as the show’s host. “This will be my last year hosting the show,” said Corden, holding back tears. “When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey, an adventure. I never saw it as my final destination, you know? And I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way. I always want to love making it. And I really think in a year from now that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there. Okay? “But I’ve got to tell you, we are not leaving today. We still have a year to go and we are all determined to make this the best year we have ever had making this show. We are going to go out with a bang. There is going to be Carpools and Crosswalks, and sketches, and other surprises. And there will be tears. There will be so many tears. ‘Cause this has been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, it really has. I’ve never taken this job for granted. Ever. Not once. And… the fact that you watch us at home. Or you watch us online. Wherever you are, all over the world. The fact that we get to try and entertain you and spend time with you is an absolute privilege for me and every single person who makes this show. Here’s to the next 12 months and it’s going to be a blast, I promise you that.” Watch Corden’s comments and hear how the audience reacted below. More than a month since alerting fans that she would be having back surgery which would require ample recovery time, “General Hospital” star Nancy Lee Grahn recently announced that she’s taping again at the daytime drama series. During her absence, the role of Alexis Davis was temporarily recast with actress Stephanie Erb whose scenes began airing earlier this week. “It was, I think, the longest I have been off of work since I’ve worked on daytime,” Grahn said in an Instagram video she shared yesterday. “What is also crazy is, when I was a young gal, I had a huge crush on ‘Trapper John, M.D.,’ and today, I had all my scenes with him and it was really fun,” added Grahn, seemingly referring to co-star Gregory Harrison who plays Gregory Chase on “GH.” In the primetime series which ran from 1979-1986 on CBS and was a spinoff of “M*A*S*H*,” Harrison played Dr. George Alonzo ‘Gonzo’ Gates. Commenting on Erb taking over the role of Alexis Davis in her absence, Grahn said, “Thank you Stephanie Erb very much for filling in for me. It’s much appreciated. I didn’t get to meet you, but I hope I do one day soon.” Grahn will likely appear back on screen at some point in late May based on the show’s current tape-to-air schedule. Currently, only the first episode can be viewed without a paid subscription while the remaining four episodes require an upgrade. In total, the service has 28 million active monthly subscribers. In discussing the streaming service’s success, NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said, “The noise in the rest of the streaming business just validates where we’re going,” referring to recent woes plaguing Netflix, among other streamers. “We’ve said from the beginning when we launched Peacock that we’re taking a different approach from other people in the streaming business. We don’t view Peacock as a separate and distinct business. We think of it as an extension of our existing TV business. And we manage it that way, that’s how we set up our business. That’s how we program it, that’s how we sell advertising across both linear and Peacock. I think that that strategy is working.” A premium subscription for Peacock costs $4.99 a month (with ads) or $9.99 a month (without ads*). When James Corden concludes his run as the host of “The Late Late Show” in 2023, he will have hosted the series for eight and a half years, the second-longest tenure as host of the series behind only Craig Ferguson. According to Deadline, Corden will exit the late night staple ahead of summer 2023. He had previously signed an extension agreement with CBS in 2019 that would keep him as host through the end of August 2023. “It’s been it’s a really hard decision to leave because I’m so immensely proud of the show. I’m thrilled to be extending [for a year],” Corden told Deadline. “I always thought I’d do it for five years and then leave and then I stayed on. I’ve really been thinking about it for a long time, thinking whether there might be one more adventure.” Although executives at CBS did everything they could to keep Corden in the fold, the comedian ultimately felt the time was right to say goodbye. “My bosses here at CBS have been incredibly supportive and extraordinarily patient with me while I made this decision,” Corden noted. In a statement, CBS President & CEO, George Cheeks said, “Seven years ago, James Corden came to the U.S. and took television by storm, with huge creative and comedic swings that resonated in a big way with viewers on-air and online. From Crosswalk the Musical to the legendary Carpool Karaoke, and every unique comedy segment he introduced, James has truly reimagined many elements of the late night format. He has also been the consummate network showman, entertaining audiences from his nightly perch at Television City as well as the Tony and Grammy stage.” He added, “In my two years at CBS, I’ve had the privilege to see James’ creative genius up close and experience his valuable partnership with CBS, both as a performer and a producer. We wish he could stay longer, but we are very proud he made CBS his American home and that this partnership will extend one more season on The Late Late Show.” While one would expect Corden to return to his UK routes following his departure, he told the publication he and his family “genuinely don’t know the answer to that,” stating, “It’s something we think about and we talk about a lot but we haven’t really made a decision on that yet. That’s the life side of things which we’ll figure out.” He added, “I love living here. I love everything it’s given. My family and I have never taken this incredible adventure for granted. Every day I drive down Sunset to work and I just think I’m from High Wycombe.” In addition to hosting, Corden has also served as a producer on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” The series debuted on March 23, 2015, with Corden as host, and currently sits at just over 1,000 episodes recorded. Previous hosts have included the aforementioned Ferguson who hosted from 2005-2014, Craig Kilborn (1999-2004) and Tom Snyder (1995-1999). The two new series are being paired as a “Villains and Superheroes” Friday night block for the kid’s network and today’s announcement comes in honor of National Superhero Day. The shows will stream shortly thereafter on Disney+. “The Villains of Valley View” centers around a teenage supervillain and her family as they are forced to uproot their lives and change identities. Isabella Pappas plays Havoc/Amy, who, in the premiere episode, stands up to the head of the League of Villains which forces her family to change their identities and relocate to a sleepy Texas suburb. With the help of her effervescent new neighbor Hartley (newcomer Kayden Muller-Janssen), Havoc — going incognito as Amy — must somehow hide her superpowers and quell her villainous nature in favor of something she and the rest of her family have fought against all their lives: being normal. Stuart plays Amy’s father, Vic/Kraniac, with additional cast members including Lucy Davis (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) as Amy’s mother, Eva/Surge, Malachi Barton (Disney Channel’s “Under Wraps”) as Amy’s younger brother, Colby/Flashform, and Reed Horstmann (“The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia”) as Amy’s older brother, Jake/Chao. Patricia Belcher (“The Week of”) recurs as Celia. “The Villains of Valley View” is created by Chris Peterson and Bryan Moore (“Lab Rats”), who also serve as executive producers and showrunners. Photo by Nino Muñoz/Disney In “Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion,” Mexican American teen Violet Rodriguez is chosen by a magical luchador mask that transforms her into the superhero Ultra Violet, a superhero fighting crime alongside her luchador uncle, Cruz, also known as Black Scorpion. Although Cruz takes Violet under his wing to teach her the responsibilities of her special powers, she doesn’t always see eye to eye with him when it comes to his methods for capturing crooks. In the meantime, she must keep her superhero identity secret from her parents and her older brother Santiago (“Tiago”), as well as her friends and schoolmates. However, she does lean on one close confidante: her best friend Maya Miller-Martinez, who provides advice and assists with documenting Ultra Violet’s adventures on social media. Scarlett Estevez leads the cast as Violet. J.R. Burton has received more than 20 Emmy Awards throughout his storied career and is best known for his performance as Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and as the host of “Reading Rainbow.” “The 1st Annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards” will take place on Sunday, December 11, 2022, at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles. “The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” will be broadcast live on Friday, June 24 from 9:00-11:00 p.m. ET (delayed PT) on CBS, the network announced today. Viewers will also be able to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. Nominations will be announced on Thursday, May 5 with additional information available in the coming weeks. This year’s telecast will mark the first time since 2019 that the awards show will take place in person and broadcast live. The 2020 telecast aired with winners accepting their awards virtually. In 2021, segments were pre-recorded with winners accepting either in-person or virtually. As has been the case in recent years, the ceremony will take place at the Pasadena Civic Center in Pasadena California with attendees celebrating outstanding achievements in daytime television programming during calendar year 2021. “We look forward to honoring this year’s unparalleled class of Lifetime Achievement honorees, each an icon in their craft, and couldn’t be more excited to award the first-ever Children’s & Family Emmys,” said Adam Sharp, President & CEO, The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “After two years of virtual ceremonies, we’re overjoyed to once again be together, in-person, to celebrate the best of television.” “The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” will be produced by NATAS and American Television International, and marks the sixth time ATI has produced the awards show. In 2009, ATI produced the telecast which aired on The CW and produced the telecast in 2010, 2011, 2020 and 2021 for CBS. This will mark the third consecutive year in which CBS will air the awards show, and the second of a two-year deal signed last year in which the network will carry the awards show. Since 1974, The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has been honoring a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime. In addition, in recognition of the marked increase in content and entries for children’s programming, 2022 will mark the first annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, with relevant categories separating from the Daytime Emmys into their own competition and ceremony. All awards are judged by a pool of peer professionals from across the television industry. Sharp and Steve Ulrich are executive producers from NATAS, while David McKenzie is executive producer from ATI.
