  3. A family tragedy will force Jack and Jennifer back to Salem next week, and with that fans can look forward to the returns of Matthew Ashford and Cady McClain in the roles beginning Tuesday, June 14, Soap Opera Network can confirm. Ashford last appeared as Jack on the daytime soap in May alongside Melissa Reeves who has played the role of Jennifer off and on since 1985. Due to a scheduling conflict, McClain will take over this time for the upcoming story arc which finds Salem mourning a beloved individual. McClain won a Daytime Emmy in 2021 for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her portrayal. She previously portrayed the role of Jennifer on “Days of our Lives” from September 2020 to March 2021 when the character appeared for a brief telephone call from Boston after departing Salem in February 2021 following the death of the character’s mother, Laura Horton. Reeves reprised the role in December 2021 and has appeared sporadically until May 2022. No stranger to daytime soaps, McClain had roles on “All My Children,” “As The World Turns” and “The Young and the Restless.” She also appeared in episodes of “St. Elsewhere,” “Cheers,” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” In real-life, she’s married to “General Hospital” star Jon Lindstrom. The two married on Valentine’s Day 2014. With her Daytime Emmy win for her work on “DAYS,” McClain set a record by becoming the first female performer to receive the coveted trophy for three different shows, spanning three decades and three different networks. In 1990 she won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Juvenile Female in a Drama Series (the category was later renamed Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series) for her portrayal of Dixie Cooney on “All My Children” (ABC) and won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2004 for her work as Rosanna Cabot on “As The World Turns” (CBS). She won the aforementioned Emmy for “DAYS” which airs on NBC. 4. After two previous attempts didn’t go so well, “The Bold and the Beautiful” star Krista Allen, who plays Taylor Hayes on the daytime drama series, was finally able to shoot a photo that fits into the aesthetic of the show’s opening credits sequence. Last week, Allen teased fans with what to expect when the photo gets added in, tweeting, “We did it!” along with a first look at the photo. When a fan asked what took so long, and wondered if the camera broke due to Allen’s “amazing energy,” the actress noted, “first shoot, the damn wig ate my face and I looked like a homeless sheepdog, [the] second shoot we had tech/lighting issues and lost most of the shots … so … FriYAY we get round 3!” The successful shoot finally took place on Friday, June 3, Allen shared, stating, “Casey [Kasprzyk, supervising producer] found an opening in my schedule and is making it happen!! Third times a charm!!” Check out Allen’s new opening photo below and watch the show’s full opening sequence pre-Allen update, below. 5. Fresh off his two-season run on the comedy series “The United States of Al,” actor Parker Young has been cast as a lead opposite Michaela McManus (“SEAL Team,” “You”) in ABC’s new drama pilot, “Criminal Nature,” from 20th Television and A+E Studios. The potential series is described as a soapy procedural set in America’s great outdoors and revolves around the tangled, messy lives of ISB agents — an elite law enforcement unit responsible for solving all serious crimes that occur in our country’s 81,000 square miles of protected land. Disney | ABC Television Group According to Deadline, Parker will play Clay, the ex-boyfriend of McManus’ character, Audrey. “As much of a cowboy as he is a cop, Clay knows more about the Wild Flower Killer than anyone else alive, and he’s been temporarily reassigned to Audrey’s team for the duration of their current investigation,” reads a character description. “Clay has always regretted letting Audrey, the love of his life, go — and he now intends to put up a fight for her — even though she’s engaged to Keldon, another Park Service agent.” Previously, “Criminal Nature” had been in development under the working title “Untitled National Parks Project” and is being written by producer Rashad Raisani. The project is being filmed off-cycle and is a new take on the same concept ABC ordered to pilot last season from a different creative team that included Kevin Costner (“Yellowstone”), Deadline notes. In addition to his work on the CBS comedy “United States of Al,” Young previously starred in such shows as “Suburgatory,” “Enlisted” and “Imposters.” He made his television debut in 2008 in an episode of “Days of our Lives” and has gone on to appear in episodes of “Big Time Rush,” “CSI: NY,” “Arrow,” “Future Man” and “Fresh Off the Boat,” among others. In 2020, he had a multi-episode arc on the drama “A Million Little Things.” Note: The post Parker Young Cast as Co-Lead in ABC’s Soapy Procedural Pilot, ‘Criminal Nature’, from 20th Television and A+E Studios appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. 7. CBS is hoping viewers will “Feel the Heat” this summer on “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless” with the release of a new marketing campaign that takes its cue directly from the popular 1980s campaign of the same name that eventually led to the network becoming the dominant player in the daytime arena for more than three decades. The song “Some Like It Hot” by Robert Palmer is also returning. According to Deadline, which first reported the news, starting tonight CBS will begin airing the updated “Feel the Heat” campaign which will not only be used to promote the soaps but will also be utilized in the promotion of the network’s “Let’s Make a Deal,” “The Price is Right” and “The Talk.” If you’re pleased to hear that the network is giving daytime a marketing campaign and airing it in primetime to boot, you might also be happy to hear that the idea behind the campaign came from high up at CBS, courtesy of CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl. “He stumbles upon things and we share with each other,” said President and Chief Marketing Officer Mike Benson in a statement released to Deadline, recalling his discussion with the network’s president. “Kelly was cracking up look [sic] at the old spots from daytime, and so I asked why can’t we bring that back in some way?” He added, “Nostalgia is really resonating with audiences today. People want to go back in a time that they remember when life was different and simpler.” To keep things familiar, the network decided to not only repackage the campaign idea but to keep the song choice intact. “When you use music in your marketing, it’s a shortcut to emotional engagement, especially to audiences who remember songs like that,” Benson noted. To get your first look at the updated campaign, click here. You can also check out the 1980s campaign which at the time featured “As The World Turns,” “Capitol” “Guiding Light” and “Y&R” below. 8. Weeks after its pre-taped upfront presentation, FOX has finally announced its fall schedule with premiere dates. The series will then slide into its regularly scheduled time period, Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, beginning Tuesday, September 20. Returning for its sixth season, medical drama “The Resident” will lead off the night at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. In the series, Dottie and Albie have created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicollete “Nicky” Roman (Anna Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom. Screenwriter Melissa London Hilfers serves as creator, writer and executive producer. Jon Feldman (“Designated Survivor”) serves as showrunner and executive producer. Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady (The Jackal Group), Jason Owen (Sandbox Entertainment) and Michael Rauch (“Royal Pains”) are executive producers. Watch the official trailer for the series below. 10. During the week of May 30-June 3, 2022, ABC’s “General Hospital” (2.216 million) not only regained the top spot among the network’s daytime broadcast shows in terms of Total Viewers, but it was also the week’s biggest gainer, adding +128,000 viewers week to week. In fact, the soap was also up compared to its performance during the same week last year, gaining +38,000 viewers. Overall, only the two half hours of “The Price is Right” (3.852 million / 4.412 million) also saw week to week gains among Total Viewers. Despite losing viewers, down -61,000 week to week, “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.619 million) was up by an impressive +203,000 viewers year over year while both “The Young and the Restless” (3.466 million) and “The Bold and the Beautiful” (3.015 million) continued to outshine their year ago performances. The folks in Genoa City saw a year to year bump of 300,000 viewers, the most for any daytime broadcast series even though it shed a mere -7,000 viewers week to week. Meanwhile, the folks in Los Angeles continue their streak of over three million daily viewers, adding +236,000 viewers over last year even with a week to week decrease of -82,000 viewers. “The View” (2.134 million) took a ratings hit despite airing a memorable 25th-anniversary reunion between the show’s original co-hosts Joy Behar, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones and Debbie Matenopoulos at the Essex House in New York City. The show was down -286,000 viewers week to week and down -178,000 viewers compared to the same week last year. Even though it aired just two episodes last week (Tuesday, May 31 and Wednesday, June 1), “Days of our Lives” (1.556 million) continues to shed viewers, losing -37,000 of them week to week. Interestingly, the soap was down by just -8,000 viewers year to year when it aired without preemptions. With the exception of both half hours of “The Price is Right” and “3rd Hour TODAY” (viewership figures unavailable at press time), which had their Memorial Day numbers included in their weekly averages, holiday numbers are excluded from the weekly averages for the remaining daytime shows and will not factor into each show’s respective season average. Additionally, Memorial Day airings were either coded as specials or a series did not air due to preemptions – see Notable Preemptions/Schedule Changes for more information. What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of May 30-June 3, 2022 in Women 18-49 rating, Women 25-54 rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance in 2021 and 2020, respectively. 16. When you’ve been playing the same character on TV for decades it’s no surprise that when a fan sees you on the street or interacts with you online that they might refer to you by your character’s name. The hope is that they can separate you from the character you play on screen. You’d hope. Recently, Michelle Stafford who plays Phyllis Summers on “The Young and the Restless” had to point out the difference by formally introducing herself to those who follow her online and on TV. “I would like to introduce myself to some of you folks,” began Stafford in a Twitter post. “My name is Michelle Stafford. It is not Phyllis Summers. That is a character I play. I am not responsible for that character’s actions. So you can throw your hate somewhere else…God Bless.” Stafford’s post came after she responded to a since-deleted tweet from an unknown user that wasn’t very kind. In her response to the user, Stafford said, “You are aware that I am Michelle and not Phyllis, right?” Following her introduction post, several of Stafford’s actor/writer friends, including past and present soap stars, shared their own similar experiences. “Wait!!!!! You’re not really Phyllis??!! OMG .. that means … I’m not really Taylor?!! I better tell Ridge,” commented Krista Allen who plays Taylor Hayes on “The Bold and the Beautiful.” “I am also not actually dead,” stated Ryan Paevey whose character on “General Hospital,” Nathan West, died after being shot by his father, Ceasar Faison (Anders Hove), in January 2018. “I am also not a con-man/jewel thief/fake Australian/dead,” pointed out former “Home and Away” and “GH” actor Zachary Garred in response to Paevey’s post. “Do you have Phyllis’s number?” joked Ron Carlivati, head writer of “Days of our Lives.” In response to his tweet, “GH” star Laura Wright (Carly Corinthos) simply said, “Haaa.” “Hey Michelle…. Really big fan x,” shared Finola Hughes (Anna Devane, “GH”). Since its publication on Saturday, June 4, Stafford’s tweet has received just over 11,000 likes and nearly 2,000 comments. She made her debut on “Y&R” in 1994 and played the role until 1997, the same year in which she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal. She later reprised the role from 2000-2013 before taking on the role of Nina Reeves from 2014-2019 on “GH.” She returned to the role of Phyllis Summers on “Y&R” in 2019. In 2004, Stafford won her second Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on “Y&R.” Slightly Off Topic: I remember going to one of the final “One Life to Live” fan club events and finding myself on a shuttle bus with Robert S. Woods who played Bo Buchanan on the soap. He and I were having a minor conversation when a woman came on the shuttle who turned out to be a fan of his, referring to him as his character immediately after she recognized him. On the surface, it wasn’t a problem but each time she spoke to him she kept referring to him as Bo and the things his character had done on the show. Eventually, I pointed out to her that his name is Bob Woods. She still kept calling him Bo. I remember Bob and me exchanging a look and a chuckle. Fun memory. 18. The new Disney Channel original series co-starring “General Hospital” actor James Patrick Stuart as a father whose family has to uproot their lives and change identities when his daughter, Havoc/Amy (Isabella Pappas), stands up to the head of the League of Villains premiered to low numbers on Friday, June 3. Entitled “The Villains of Valley View,” an average of just 295,000 viewers tuned in across the show’s two-episode premiere while in Adults 18-49 the show averaged a mere 0.07 rating. Overall, the comedy ranked 70th and 83rd, respectively, in the cable ratings among Total Day figures released by Nielsen (via ShowBuzzDaily), sorted by Adults 18-49. The first episode averaged 309,000 viewers and a 0.07 rating in the demo at 8:00 p.m. followed by the second episode with 281,000 viewers and a 0.06 rating. Following “The Villains of Valley View” was the two-episode premiere of “Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion,” which follows Mexican American teen Violet Rodriguez (Scarlett Estevez) who is chosen by a magical luchador mask that transforms her into the superhero Ultra Violet, a superhero fighting crime alongside her luchador uncle, Cruz (J.R. Villarreal), also known as Black Scorpion. The new series ranked 102nd and 129th in Total Day cable rankings, averaging just 253,000 episodes over its two episodes with a 0.05 and a 0.04 rating, respectively, in Adults 18-49. The first episode averaged 269,000 viewers and the second episode averaged 236,000 viewers. The success of either show won’t necessarily be determined by their ratings performance on the linear network, particularly as their core demo is teens/tweens, but by how they perform when episodes become available to stream on Disney+ (date to be determined). 21. According to court documents obtained by Soap Opera Network, former “General Hospital” star Ingo Rademacher is seeking to quash a subpoena from American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. (ABC) that was issued to the Protection of the Educational Rights of Kids (PERK) organization “on the grounds that the category of requested documents violate privacy rights and are irrelevant to this action.” In a declaration submitted to the Los Angeles Superior Court on May 26, 2022, attorney Scott J. Street of JW/ Howard Attorneys, Ltd, the attorneys of record for plaintiff Rademacher, stated that on April 22, 2022, the law firm was served with a notice and copy of defendant ABC’s business records subpoena issued to the “non-party” organization. “PERK, Ingo and myself have had discussions about this case – more specifically, in preparing for the litigation of this case. All discussions occurred with me or at my direction,” Street said in his declaration. “These discussions and documents provided to PERK, if any, were private and confidential and are protected from disclosure by the attorney-client privilege and work product doctrine. Our firm is serving ABC with written objections to the subpoena on that basis.” In the request to quash it stated, “it is not hard to appreciate that ABC’s subpoena – seeking confidential communications and attorney work product between Ingo, Ingo’s counsel and a speculated litigation funder – does nothing to prove Ingo’s claims or ABC’s defenses. The subpoena is merely ABC’s campaign of intimidation to harass and pressure Ingo to drop the case against them. As an ill-fated means of garnering litigation leverage in this action, ABC has set about to intentionally harass every single person that Ingo may have spoken to in the last five years to destroy Ingo’s character and ascertain how someone could afford to bring such a case against ABC. Apparently, ABC hopes to resolve this action by intimidating Ingo and asserting its power as the ‘big-pocket’ litigator that can crush Ingo’s ability to litigate this case.” The motion further states, “ABC refused to mediate this case – a fact which evidences the true nature of this subpoena. It cannot allege it is seeking financial information for purposes of settlement, in part because its wholly irrelevant, but also because that is a ruse evidenced by ABC’s own actions. ABC is not entitled to sensitive, private information that is irrelevant to Ingo’s allegations concerning privacy rights and unlawful discrimination, though a subpoena or otherwise. ABC is also not entitled to know whether any person or entity is financing this litigation, if at all. It is apparent that the information is designed solely to harass as it has no relevancy to this action. The subpoena should be quashed.” A hearing is set for Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. or as soon thereafter. According to a memorandum of points and authorities included in the motion regarding his reasoning behind his decision to sue ABC, “[Rademacher] filed this action alleging violations of his privacy rights, unlawful religious and medical condition discrimination, retaliation, and wrongful termination” following ABC’s decision in summer 2021 to order anybody working on a television show it produced to get a Covid-19 vaccination. “That meant, Ingo, as a cast member of the ABC-produced soap opera, ‘General Hospital,’ which he had been a cast member for 25 years, was required to receive a Covid-19 shot to continue working on the show or request a religious exemption,” the suit says. “Although ABC claimed to grant exemptions for sincerely held religious objections to the shot, it refused to accept Ingo’s request – without explanation. ABC then terminated Ingo’s contract to perform.” In November 2021, it was announced that Rademacher would be exiting his role as Jasper “Jax” Jacks on the ABC drama after failing to comply with the company’s vaccine mandate for employees. He last appeared on the soap on Monday, November 22, 2021, when the character departed Port Charles for Australia on important business. A jury trial is currently on the docket for Monday, February 27, 2023. This will be Frazier and Turner’s first time hosting the awards ceremony and marks the 16th time CBS has broadcast the Daytime Emmy Awards, more than any other network in history. As hosts of the six-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning “Entertainment Tonight,” Frazier and Turner “have established themselves as accomplished journalists covering the stories that most impact the entertainment industry,” CBS said. Frazier has interviewed Hollywood’s biggest stars and traveled the world covering exclusive stories for “ET,” simultaneously as a journalist, producer and entrepreneur. In addition to her hosting duties at “ET,” Turner is also the host of the CBS series “Secret Celebrity Renovation.” She’s a regular contributor for CNN and made television history in 2021 when she became the first Black woman to host “ET” in the highly rated syndicated series’ 41-year history. “The Daytime Emmy Awards” recognize outstanding achievement in television programming and crafts since 1974, honoring work in a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime. In addition, in recognition of the marked increase in content and entries for children’s programming, 2022 will mark the first annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, with relevant categories separating from the Daytime Emmys into their own competition and ceremony. “The Young and the Restless” and “General Hospital” lead all daytime shows with 18 and 17 nominations, respectively. “Days of our Lives” has 12 nominations and “The Bold and the Beautiful” has eight. “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem” snagged four nominations, including in the categories of Drama Series, Writing and Directing.
