  2. As previously reported, “Days of our Lives” is on hiatus now through Friday, February 18 so that NBC can broadcast the 2022 Winter Olympics from Beijing. Unlike the Summer Olympic games, which has routinely taken the daytime drama series off the air over the last couple of cycles, the Winter games have never caused an interruption in the show’s airing schedule until now, and that’s why head writer Ron Carlivati decided to publicly respond to viewer vitriol over the lack of any cliffhangers shown in the final episode aired before the hiatus – Thursday, February 3. “We did not know until well after these episodes were written and taped that we would be preempted for the Winter Olympics,” Carlivati said on Twitter yesterday in response to one viewer who made claims to the contrary. The poster had stated, “They do know. That’s why these huge cliffhangers use to happen all the time. #Days has always taped months in advance and was able to deliver huge cliffhangers. It just seemed to change with the change in writers.” Earlier, the same poster commented, “#Days use to leave us with huge cliffhangers right before Olympic break. The kind where you were on the edge of your seat waiting for it to come back on. The past two have just been blah.. Come on @carlivatiron I know you can do better!” They ended the post using the hashtags “disappointed” and “nothing exciting” to emphasize their point. With “Days of our Lives” filming six to seven months ahead of airdate at the time the episodes were taped, and still continuing to do so today, the show was not made aware of NBC’s decision on how and/or what times it would air the Olympics until after it was publicly announced in November of last year due to various factors, including COVID. Therefore, it’s clear that had the show been given more advanced notice viewers might have seen a lot more drama in the final episode aired before the break. However, this just means there will be lots of drama to come when the show returns with all-new episodes beginning Monday, February 21. 4. Cut for time. I thought I made it clear in the first sentence, lol.
  5. Usually, when a scene from a TV series or a movie is cut for time fans only get to see the missing clip when it’s part of a DVD/Blu-ray release of a film or a full season box set, and for the most part, neither of those opportunities are available when it comes to the daytime soaps. So, what a surprise it was when “Days of our Lives” released a deleted scene on Friday via its YouTube channel which features the characters John Black and Marlena Evans (Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall) having a conversation about recent events. Courtesy of NBC As you’ll recall, Marlena was possessed by the devil. After her family came together to help her overcome the devil’s hold, love won out and Marlena was saved as her son, Father Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan), led the family in performing an exorcism. And with that, in our cut scene, Marlena speaks with John about how grateful she was to have her family around during her time of need to which John tells her, “Doc, you’ve been there for every single one of us. I think it was a perfect time for us to finally be there for you.” An emotional Marlena then talks about how Eric just recommitted his vows to the priesthood only to find his first act back was to help his mother. “You know, I think he is so at peace being a priest,” she says of her son. John and Marlena later discuss the news that EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) was behind Sami’s (Alison Sweeney) kidnapping. “How could EJ dare to kidnap her and hide her away from her family, from her friends. Maybe this time, that man has gone too far,” Marlena says of her son-in-law. Too bad neither she, John nor most of Salem knows the truth – Lucas (Bryan Dattilo) was behind Sami’s kidnapping, not EJ – as John’s response is filled with a bit of irony. “I definitely know somebody who’s waiting in the wings,” John tells Marlena of Lucas. “He’s been pining away for Sami ever since the both of them came back here to Salem. Who knows, maybe he’ll get his wish and finally get her back for good.” Watch the scene below to see if the show made the right decision in placing it on the cutting room floor. 8. NBC has released the trailer of its true-crime limited series “The Thing About Pam,” based on the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria that resulted in her husband Russ’ conviction despite his insistence that he didn’t kill her. Although Russ was later exonerated, the brutal crime set off a chain of events that exposed a diabolical scheme deeply involving Pam Hupp (played by Oscar-winner Renée Zellweger in the series). Photo by Skip Bolen/NBC Set to premiere Tuesday, March 8 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, the series stars the aforementioned Zellweger as Pam Hupp, Judy Greer as former Lincoln County prosecutor Leah Askey, Josh Duhamel (“All My Children”) as Pam’s defense attorney Joel Schwartz, Katy Mixon (“American Housewife”) as Betsy Faria, Glenn Fleshler as Russ Faria. Gideon Adlon, Sean Bridgers, Suanne Spoke and Mac Brandt also star. Before becoming a series, the real-life story was featured multiple times in episodes of “Dateline NBC,” and became the titular subject for the popular 2019 podcast “The Thing ABout Pam” which remains one of the most downloaded podcast on Apple Podcasts. Watch the trailer below. Note: The post ‘The Thing About Pam’ Trailer Released; True-Crime Series Stars Renée Zellweger, Josh Duhamel and Judy Greer appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. Under Malcolm’s debonair exterior lies a dark heart, and a twisted evil lurks inside Foxworth Hall that will threaten Olivia’s happiness and that of her children. 11. The soap was huge in the 1990s, and obviously still is. Daytime still made the butter that primetime toasted its bread with until maybe the latter part of the decade. I remember watching Y&R in primetime and I think it was this episode but I can't remember what happened. I think it was on a Tuesday at 8:00 p.m., well before NCIS locked that slot down before eventually moving to Mondays this season.
  12. Since being let go as Adam Newman on “The Young and the Restless” in 2013, fans of actor Michael Muhney have been clamoring for another soap to pick him up to play either a recast or a new character. Unfortunately for them, Muhney himself has closed the book on ever returning to daytime soaps. “Truly no offense to anyone in production or anyone who is a viewer but I have no desire to do another soap,” said Muhney on Twitter recently when a fan said he should look into joining “General Hospital” as an example in response to Muhney saying in a tweet, “It takes a helluva lot of ‘stickwithittude’ to receive rejection as often as I face it, but I’ve nothing else to do with my time so I guess I’ll remain a glutton for punishment.” Commenting further on his soap experience, Muhney stated, “It was something I thought would be an interesting challenge and I’m glad I tried it but I started career in prime time and my heart is both there and in streamers.” He added, “I always promised myself I’d only ever play ‘Adam’ on ‘Y&R.’ No more. No less. That was the only character I was ever interested in portraying on daytime tele.” Earlier in his timeline, Muhney commented on how tough it is to make it in Hollywood, saying, “I wish I could publicly talk about the projects I come so painfully close on. There are a few every year. Unfortunately, in this hyper-angry world we live in, too many critical folks would post negative comments to those productions.” While Muhney’s IMDb credits have been sporadic with his most notable credits since “Y&R” being an appearance in a 2017 episode of “The Good Doctor,” and more recently portraying the role of Martin Haywood over four episodes in the Apple TV+ series “Truth Be Told” starring Octavia Spencer and Mekhi Phifer, the actor is content. “With every big role I’ve played I saved my money. I may not be much of an artist but with the sparing talent I possess I’ve chosen to be somewhat picky about projects,” he notes. “I’d rather own three less houses and no yachts and have an artistically fulfilling career.” Muhney closed out his comments with a recommendation to watch the Ricky Gervais series “After Life,” which is about a man dealing with the loss of his wife after she dies from breast cancer by saying and doing whatever he wants no matter the consequences. “Ricky Gervais is inspired. You laugh. You cry. This show is absolutely brilliant.” The series complete series is now streaming on Netflix. 13. Airing just two episodes thus far, the new primetime soap “Promised Land” is already not living up to its name in the Nielsen ratings. Debuting Monday, January 24 on ABC, “Promised Land” averaged a mere 1.893 million viewers and a 0.22 rating in Adults 18-49 in Live+Same Day broadcast finals for episode one, reports ShowBuzzDaily. In week two (January 31), the series held its week ago demo but lost over 100,000 viewers (1.765 million vs 1.893 million) in Live+Same Day broadcast finals. Overall, lead-in “The Bachelor” averaged 3.607 million viewers and a 0.77 rating in Adults 18-49 for the January 24 episode while attracting 3.537 million viewers and a 0.78 rating in Adults 18-49 for its January 31 episode. For context, “The Bachelor” airs over two hours (from 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET/PT) and was the highest-rated or the second highest-rated show among the big four networks on both nights. Meanwhile, “Promised Land” airs at 10:00 p.m. and was the lowest-rated (including ties) or the second lowest-rated series on both nights. Also, the first two episodes were made available on Hulu the day after the series premiered (since January 25), marking the first time an ABC series was available on Hulu before airing on the network. Courtesy of NBC Further, on Monday, January 31, NBC’s special celebrating the life and career of the late Betty White (“Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl”) won its 10:00 p.m. slot with 4.274 million viewers and a 0.52 rating in Adults 18-49 which was the fourth highest-rated program of the night in the demo and the second most-watched overall. “Promised Land” follows two Latin families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley. The series stars John Ortiz as Joe Sandoval, Cecilia Suárez as Lettie Sandoval, Augusto Aguilera as Mateo, Christina Ochoa as Veronica Sandoval, Mariel Molino as Carmen Sandoval, Tonatiuh as Antonio Sandoval, Andres Velez as Carlos, Katya Martín as Juana and Rolando Chusan as Billy and Bellamy Young as Margaret Honeycroft. The show is written and executive produced by Matt Lopez. Adam Kolbrenner and Maggie Malina also serve as executive producers. Executive producer Michael Cuesta also directs. The series is produced by ABC Signature, a part of Disney Television Studios. Note: The post ‘Promised Land’ Not Living Up to Its Name in the Ratings appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. 15. There are just a few days left in the fundraising campaign in support of a second season of “The Disappointments,” the new digital series that follows a group of close friends in their 50s who realize that the life they’re living today falls far short of what they had imagined for themselves when they were 25, including their careers, living situations, family dynamics, romantic relationships and much more. “Season two promises to be bigger with 10 episodes [at] 22-25 minutes long. That equals the length of TWO feature films!” reads a message on the show’s Indiegogo fundraising page. “There will be even more antics from our four protagonists, new and exciting locations, and an even higher production value. In Season One we pulled in every favor possible to make the show happen. We’re simply not going to have that luxury the second time around, which is another reason why our fundraising goal has increased. Our team will always find the most economic way to make the show happen, but even with our famous thriftiness, this truly is what a new, expanded season will cost. Remember, this is not just for the shoot, but for post-production as well.” With just over $56,000 raised out of the $100,000 planned, and just four days left of fundraising remaining, if you enjoyed what you saw of the show, or have yet to take a look and like what you see afterward, make sure to provide support however possible. “If this resonates with you and you’re moved to make a contribution, large or small, you’ll be helping us to meet the budget for a new and expanded season of ‘The Disappointments.’ The scripts are written and polished and the entire team is ready to jump back into production as soon as we have the funds. Over the next 60 days, you alone — our backers — have the power to bring Season Two to life! As Dwight would say, “We believe in you.” Watch a clip below featuring the show’s stars, including the show’s writer, director, and executive producer Rich Burns as they share how you can support the show in reaching its funding goals. You can also learn more about how you can help out by clicking here. Watch the show’s first season trailer below. For more information on the show, make sure to follow it on Instagram and Facebook. 16. In honor of Black History Month, and part of FOX’s #TVForAll campaign, effective today, February 2, all 12 episodes of first season drama “Our Kind of People” are now available to view for free on Tubi, the streaming service from FOX Entertainment. “Our Kind of People” Photo by Robert Ascroft/FOX “Our Kind of People” is inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s provocative, critically acclaimed book, “Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class,” and takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for more than 50 years. The series stars Yaya DaCosta (“Chicago Med,” “All My Children”), Morris Chestnut (“The Resident”), Joe Morton (“Scandal”), Nadine Ellis (“Let’s Stay Together”), Lance Gross (“Hawaii 5-0”), Rhyon Nicole Brown (“Empire”), Kyle Bary (“Ginny & Georgia”), Debbi Morgan (“Power Book II: Ghost,” “All My Children”) and newcomer Alana Bright. There’s no word yet on whether “Our Kind of People” will receive a second season from FOX but in an interview with Deadline, series creator Karin Gist said, “If we get a second season, it’s going to be even more explosive. There will be more family complications, about the sisters, and bringing the family back together. I’m also excited about adding some new characters that shake up the world a bit and exploring the themes of power and access. I think that’s really relevant to what’s going on in our country, particularly through the lens of this really wealthy African American family. I’m really excited about where we could take this show and I know the audience is too.” In addition to “Our Kind of People,” the digital documentary “Making History in Hollywood” is also available on Tubi and features Malcolm-Jamal Warner (“The Resident”), Brian Michael Smith (“9-1-1: Lone Star”), Dulcé Sloan (“The Great North”), Kyla Pratt (CALL ME KAT), Sierra McClain (“9-1-1: Lone Star”), Karin Gist (“Our Kind of People”) and Debbi Morgan (“Our Kind of People”), as they discuss their triumphs and personal experiences working in Hollywood while spotlighting notable figures who inspired them. This month, #TVForAll debuts a special Black History Month anthem, written and performed by Tisha Campbell Martin and Dani Wright, and produced by PK. The anthem will be shared across local FOX stations and FOX digital all month long. Launched in early 2020, the campaign provides a space to highlight, champion and celebrate diverse voices across FOX Entertainment. Watch a promo featuring the anthem below. 17. It’s been more than a year since it was announced that ABC had put into development a primetime spinoff of “All My Children,” entitled “Pine Valley,” and since then there has been virtually no news on when fans could expect to see some of their favorite characters back on screen, if at all. That could soon change according to Susan Lucci (ex-Erica Kane), who recently revealed that there has been some movement on the project but COVID has put a delay on things, for now. Speaking with PEOPLE about her ongoing collaboration with the American Heart Association and its Go Red for Women initiative, the soap icon told the publication, “There has been movement. I wish it was a quicker movement, but yes, everything in terms of being in the right hands, as far as I know, would be in place.” “It’s really interesting, and the concept is so good,” Lucci added. “[It’s] in the right hands … [with] Kelly Ripa [ex-Hayley Vaughan Santos; “Live with Kelly and Ryan”] and her husband, Mark Consuelos [ex-Mateo Santos], who are both so terrific. They would be executive producers, so I’m really hoping that this is going to actually go forward.” As for why things have been delayed, Lucci put the blame on COVID, saying, “COVID is in play again, and things are slowed down.” The potential series is based on the town in which the daytime soap opera took place (Pine Valley) and will follow a young journalist with a secret agenda looking to expose the dark and murderous history of the town only to become entangled in a feud between the Kane and Santos families. The series plans to explore all the secrets that come with the Kane and Santos family names. Lucci has already indicated she will be part of the show should get picked up by ABC. In addition to Ripa and Consuelos, who will also serve as executive producers, “Pine Valley” is being spearheaded Leo Richardson (“EastEnders,” “Katy Keene,” “Star”), Andrew Stearn and Robert Nixon, son of the late Agnes Nixon, creator of both “AMC” and “One Life to Live.” Since submitting the producer’s draft for the potential series last February, Richardson has left the potential series in the hands of those above him (i.e. network executives). “I wrote the script, true to what I pitched and sold to ABC, and we are waiting now,” he said last year. “I am incredibly proud of what we have cooked up and we will keep you posted. Fingers crossed for us please.” Hulu Originals and ABC President Craig Erwich glossed over a question on the potential show’s status when asked during his turn at last month’s TCA press tour. “I don’t have any updates on that project right now,” he said. 18. It looks like “General Hospital” is finally getting some mainstream press attention thanks to the likes of TV Guide Magazine and TV Line, the popular entertainment website founded by former soap magazine journalist Michael Ausiello who also serves as the site’s president and editorial director. Courtesy of TV Guide Magazine In the Cheers & Jeers section of the latest issue of TV Guide (January 31-February 13, 2022), on newsstands now, senior writer Damian Holbrook gives the soap a “cheer” for killing off Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) last month, saying, “Cheers to ‘General Hospital’ for pulling the plug on Luke Spencer. Having Anthony Geary’s bad boy perish in a cable-car accident is a big swing that could pay off if the mystery surrounding his shady offscreen death drives more eyes to the ABC soap.” The town of Port Charles mourned Luke on the January 21 episode which netted a 0.40 rating in Women 18-49 and a 0.59 rating in Women 25-54. Overall, the full week averaged 2.184 million viewers, down -125,000 viewers compared to the show’s prior week averages. Courtesy of TVLine Media, LLC/PMC Meanwhile, Ausiello recently tweeted, “#GeneralHospital has maintained a level of quality these past 2 years that’s miraculous, given the forces working against daytime soaps (namely budget tightening, pandemic). Smart writing/direction, A+ cast, plots that tie into show’s history. Gives me hope for genre.” Ausiello previously worked for both Soap Opera Update and Soaps In Depth before segueing to TV Guide in 1999. He also worked for Entertainment Weekly before finally launching TV Line in 2011. The publication is owned by Penske Media Corporation. Do you agree with TV Guide and TV Line? 19. Lindsay Hartley will once again step in for Kelly Monaco on “General Hospital,” appearing as Sam McCall over “a handful of episodes” beginning Thursday, February 3. According to Soap Opera Digest, which first reported the news, Monaco took a brief break from the role in January but has already returned to the show’s Prospect Studios set and is back taping. Since scripts are written well in advance of production, it was impossible for the show to write out the character even temporarily, requiring the need for a substitute. Hartley had already portrayed the part in August 2020 when Monaco was unavailable after she reportedly was forced into a 14-day quarantine following a breathing problem related to a mask on the first day back shooting after the show got the greenlight from Los Angeles County during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Monaco praised Hartley’s portrayal of Sam, giving thanks for “stepping in and doing a beautiful job playing Sam. Girl.. you kicked ass. Way to go.” In addition to “General Hospital,” Hartley has also appeared on the soaps “Days of our Lives” and “Passions.” Behind the scenes she’s become a staple at Lifetime, directing several movies for the network including “Killer Ambition” starring “The Bold and the Beautiful” actor Sean Kanan (Deacon Sharpe). 21. With Eric Martsolf helping announce the end of the DOOL App last week, it’s only fitting that the actor would be the first to introduce new “Days of our Lives” content to the show’s official YouTube channel where producer Corday Productions plans to publish original digital content going forward. In a video, published yesterday, February 1, entitled “Drinks with Eric Martsolf,” the actor, who plays Brady Black on the daytime drama series, can be seen sitting at a table on the set of the Brady Pub facing the camera while answering pre-set questions with the implication that he’s talking directly to the fans of the show. Screengrab via @NBCDays/YouTube Questions answered by Martsolf included where he drew his inspiration from when it came to deciding to become an actor, what sports he played while growing up, where’s he’s from, how he met his wife, his favorite color, what he likes to do with his free time, what makes him happy, and finally when the last time he cried. Watch the clip below to hear his answers. Note: The post ‘Days of our Lives’ Welcomes Viewers to YouTube via ‘Drinks with Eric Martsolf’ – VIDEO appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. 22. Robert Newman will be taking over the role of business tycoon Ashland Locke on “The Young and the Restless” beginning Wednesday, February 9, and we have your first look at the actor in a scene alongside his on-screen spouse Amelia Heinle (Victoria Newman) as the two share a pleasant moment together in the office. See the photo below. Photo by Monty Brinton/CBS It was announced last month that Newman would replace Richard Burgi in the role after the actor was let go when he was found to be in violation of the show’s COVID-19 protocols. “I showed up to work and it was not within the show’s guidelines, which was a ten-day protocol, so I inadvertently violated the show’s COVID rules and protocols,” Burgi said at the time, revealing he instead followed the CDC recommended five day quarantine period after testing positive over the Christmas holiday. “I felt terrible about it, I still do. It bothers me mightily but I respect whatever the show’s decision is.” The show opted to immediately replace Burgi with Newman. Prior to joining television’s highest-rated and most-watched daytime drama series, Newman is probably best known to soap fans for his 28-year portrayal of Joshua Lewis on “Guiding Light,” which despite its cancellation in 2009 still remains the longest-running program in broadcast history. Outside of soaps, “Newman has guest-starred in such shows as “House of Cards,” “Chicago Fire,” “Homeland,” “Criminal Minds,” “NCIS” and “Law & Order: SVU.” His film credits include “Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “Dracano,” and the short film “Deadline,” which in 2014 earned him a Best Actor award at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. He’s also appeared in the Off-Broadway productions “Perfect Crime,” “She’s of a Certain Age,” “Sessions: The Musical,” and “Quiet on the Set.” Shortly after the news of his casting broke last month, Newman posted on Facebook, saying, “Thanks to everyone for the sweet posts and messages about my joining the cast of Y&R. I couldn’t be more pleased. I’ve had great respect for the show and [its] wonderful cast for many, many years. I’m happy to be a part of it. I had a lovely zoom meeting with [co-executive producer/head writer] Josh Griffith and [executive producer] Anthony Morina last night. We talked quite a bit about the character, and I’m very excited by the scripts I’m getting so far. I’m scared to death, of course, but I think that’s healthy.” He added, “It’ll be a new adventure and I’m feeling pretty blessed to have the opportunity. Cheers!” Note: The post Robert Newman’s First Airdate as Ashland Locke on ‘The Young and the Restless’ Revealed + First Look Photo appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. Read More

  25. If you’re tuning in to “The Bold and the Beautiful” this week, look for Brooke Logan’s (Katherine Kelly Lang) world to get rocked as the revelation that the kiss between her and “Santa Clause” could soon come out when Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) and Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) seek to verify little Douglas’ (Henry Joseph Samiri) recollection of the New Year’s Eve liplock between Brooke and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas, who it turns out was really Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) wearing a Santa hat. Officially, everyone only knows that Brooke had fallen off the wagon and not that she shared an intimate moment with her ex. So, it’s not a surprise that Brooke is “scared to death that Ridge [Thorsten Kaye] is going to just blow up and walk out” when the truth comes out, according to Lang who recently sat for an interview with TV Insider’s Jim Halterman, which was also published in the newest issue of TV Guide Magazine. Although she’s unaware of how things could unravel, particularly that Douglas had seen the kiss from afar, it’s her worrying too much that is raising her stress levels sky-high. “Brooke doesn’t realize it’s all unraveling,” Lang says previewing the Tuesday, February 1 episode. “As hard as she’s trying to keep it quiet and tell half-truths, she thinks she’s OK.” Photo by Sonja Flemming/CBS As for how Thomas and Steffy plan to get to the bottom of what really happened, the siblings plan to gain access to Brooke’s home security tapes which Lang jokes while asking, “Why hasn’t Brooke thought about that?”All in all, the big revelation that Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) ultimately tampered with the champagne bottle by placing a nonalcoholic label over a regular bottle, thereby ending Brooke’s sobriety, is just one of several climaxes this storyline is expected to take which is something Lang is looking forward to. “I can’t wait until Brooke finds out!” she said.
