  1. We’re officially at the halfway mark of the 2021-2022 TV season as ratings for the week of March 14-18, 2022 represents the 26th week of the 52-week season. Some shows are doing better than others while some others might want to consider their options for next season. You can determine which ones we’re talking about in the comments below. For the week, every daytime broadcast series was down week-to-week among Total Viewers with “General Hospital” (2.177 million) losing the least amount, down -21,000 viewers while the first half-hour of “The Price is Right” (3.566 million) lost the most, down -451,000 viewers. The second half-hour (4.216 million) lost down -340,000 viewers. Compared to the same week in 2020 when viewing levels were hitting multi-year highs during the initial shutdown of the country due to COVID-19, the first half-hour is down -1.254 million viewers while the second half-hour is down -1.349 million viewers. Only “The Young and the Restless” (3.402 million) managed to maintain viewership somewhat on par with 2020 figures, down -43,000 viewers compared to 2020. In fact, week to week, “Y&R” is only down -39,000 viewers. After beating “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.665 million) in both Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 rating one week earlier, “The Talk” (1.376 million) fell back to last place, falling the most week to week in both demos. More specifically, in Women 25-54 rating, “The Talk” tied both “GH” and “Y&R” in week to week losses, each down -0.05. Only “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.847 million) saw a week to week increase in both demos (up +0.01) while the second half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.809 million) and “The View” (2.276 million) were also up slightly in Women 18-49, “GMA3” was the only other show up week to week in Women 25-54 rating. What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of March 14-18, 2022 in Women 18-49 rating, Women 25-54 rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance in 2020. A closer look at the daytime soaps, including their daily performance in the demos, will be posted soon. Note: Year to Year comparisons are currently unavailable due to a gap in data received by Soap Opera Network one year earlier. Comparisons to 2021 figures will return in a few weeks. Households and Total Viewers for “TODAY 3rd Hour” and “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna” were unavailable at press time which skews the rankings in those categories. Comparable 2020 figures for “GMA3: What Need to Know” are based on the performance of “Pandemic: What You Need to Know” which was later rebranded to its current iteration, effective March 2020. “The Talk” was not rated by Nielsen during the comparable week in 2020. 2. The CW has given an early renewal to seven of its scripted series for next season, joining already renewed unscripted fare “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” “Masters of Illusion” and “World’s Funniest Animals” on the network’s 2022-2023 broadcast schedule. Returning next season is “Walker” (season three), “All American” (season five), “The Flash” (season nine), “Superman & Lois” (season three), “Nancy Drew” (season four), “Riverdale” (season seven) and “Kung Fu” (season three). “As we prepare for the 2022-23 season, these scripted series, along with the alternative series we renewed earlier, will serve as the start of a solid foundation utilizing some of our most-watched series for us to build on for next year and beyond,” said Mark Pedowitz, Chairman and CEO, The CW Network, in announcing the renewals. “These dramas are also important to our overall digital strategy, as they are some of our most-streamed and socially-engaged programming, and we look forward to adding more new and returning series to help strengthen and expand our multiplatform footprint.” The network is expected to announce additional renewals and series orders over the next two months as it gears up to reveal its new lineup to advertisers in May. 3. First appearing on The CW’s “All American” in the show’s March 14 episode, entitled “Liberation,” “One Life to Live” alum Kamar de los Reyes (ex-Antonio Vega) is set to continue in a recurring capacity on the drama series about a gifted high school football star who changes schools to become a state champion at Beverly Hills High. “All American” Courtesy of The CW First reported by TheWrap, de los Reyes is playing Coach Mr. Montes, a smart, confident, and unpredictable Coastal California football coach who develops a unique relationship with Asher Adams (Cody Christian) that ends up challenging both of them. The name “Coach Mr. Montes” refers to how JJ Parker (Hunter Clowdus) distinguishes Montes from his wife (played by Alexandra Barreto) who is also named Coach Montes. Thus, he refers to her as Coach Mrs. Montes and the other as Coach Mr. Montes. Asher notes to JJ, “You know, you could just call them both ‘Coach Montes,’ right?” Thus far, Asher, who wants to become a student football coach, has been receiving tips from Mr. Tontes but unfortunately found himself without a job on the team as there were no openings available except for the role of laundry boy. Not wanting to pass up an opportunity when it presents itself, Asher quickly accepted as he told Mr. Montes, “I’d be a fool not to do whatever it takes to learn from the best, which you are.” Look for de los Reyes to appear in four episodes of what remains of the show’s current fourth season. Since last appearing on “One Life to Live” in 2009, de los Reyes has made a name for himself in Hollywood, starring in “Sleepy Hollow” for FOX in 2017, and appearing on a number of shows including “MacGyver,” “SEAL Team,” “Castle,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “Shooter” and “Blue Bloods,” among a multitude of others. More recently, the actor had a multi-episode guest arc on “The Rookie.” He also voiced Raul Menendez in the “Call of Duty: Black Ops” video game series. 6. “The Bold and the Beautiful” original cast member Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke Logan) and co-stars Don Diamont (Bill Spencer) and Jack Wagner (Nick Marone) appeared on the Monday, March 21 episode of “The Talk” to discuss the daytime soap and the celebration of its 35th anniversary. The pair sat with co-hosts Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell, Sheryl Underwood and guest co-host Margaret Cho and revealed what fans can expect later this week when the soap airs a special anniversary episode. Fans also got a glimpse at Lang’s audition tape, learned how Diamont’s characters on “B&B” and “The Young and the Restless” got named, and how Wagner responded to being back at the Television City studio where the daytime drama tapes. First things first: While original cast member John McCook (Eric Forrester) was a no-show despite being scheduled to appear, it turns out he’s the reason Lang got the job as Brooke Logan. “I credit John McCook for getting me that part, honestly,” said Lang of her audition test opposite McCook. “I was so lucky to be able to do that screen test with him. He made me so comfortable and so confident.” While Diamont has been on “B&B” for a number of years playing Dollar Bill Spencer, he actually got his soaps playing Brad Carlton on “The Young and the Restless.” He shared, “I played Brad on ‘Y&R’ and [the late] Bill Bell [co-creator of ‘B&B’ and ‘Y&R’] named my character after his son Brad [Bell; ‘B&B’ executive producer and head writer]. And now Brad hired me to play Bill on ‘Bold and the Beautiful’ 13 years ago. So my entire adult life I have worked for the Bells.” Returning to the “B&B” set for the first time since 2012, Wagner said of the experience, “I was actually pretty blindsided just by driving to CBS because I was on the show for 8 or 9 years. Just driving there and walking down the halls at CBS, and then up to the dressing room and reconnecting to the actors, it was unbelievable.” He added, “Like you know, when you see a high school friend and you just jump right back like time hasn’t passed. It’s so great to be back on the show again.” John McCook, Winsor Harmon, Jack Wagner, Don Diamont and Thorsten Kaye (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) Photo by Sonja Flemming/CBS Lang teased what fans can expect from the special standalone episode airing on Thursday, March 24, wherein Brooke reminisces over each of her five true loves, including Eric, Bill, Nick, Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) and Thorne Forrester (Winsor Harmon). “I’m so lucky to work with these wonderful actors and people, these gorgeous men. It’s been such an honor. I was a little nervous…but it’s a beautiful show,” she said. Watch their appearance on “The Talk” below, including Lang’s audition tape. “The Bold and the Beautiful” was recently picked up for an additional two seasons by CBS which will keep the daytime drama series on the network through at least the 2023-2024 television season. The soap airs weekdays at 1:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT on CBS. 11. Led by head writer Ron Carlivati, the writing team of “Days of our Lives” took home the Writers Guild Award in the category of Daytime Drama for the second year in a row during tonight’s virtual presentation of “The 74th Annual Writers Guild Awards,” hosted by Ashley Nicole Black (“A Black Lady Sketch Show”). Carlivati accepted the award in a pre-taped speech in which he jokingly stated, “We may or may not have won but either way I’m gonna keep this one.” He was referring to the fact that all nominees were required to record acceptance speeches for the virtual ceremony in the event they won. Courtesy of NBC In Carlivati’s full speech, which can be watched in its entirety below, the writer said, “Thank you so much to the Writers Guild for this award which we may or may not have won but either way I’m gonna keep this one. Thanks to everybody at NBC, especially Michael and Sharice. Your support of ‘Days of our Lives’ has been incredible. We did a mini-series with you this year for Peacock, we did a Christmas movie, which was great for the show and for the genre. Thanks to Ken Corday [executive producer], to Albert Alarr [co-executive producer], to our cast and crew at ‘DAYS’ who worked tirelessly to put on 250 episodes a year, especially over the past two years has been amazing, and lastly to my team of writers I could not do my job without you, especially Ryan Quan. There wouldn’t be a ‘Days of our Lives’ without you.” In addition to Carlivati and Quan, the “Days of our Lives” writing team winning the award included writers Lorraine Broderick, Joanna Cohen, Carolyn Culliton, Richard Culliton, Jamey Giddens, David Kreizman, Rebecca McCarty, Dave Ryan, Katherine D. Schock and Elizabeth Snyder. The soap submitted three scripts, including Doug reveals to Marlena that he’s possessed, Thanksgiving when Doug and Julie battled Marlena and then the Christmas Day exorcism. “DAYS” beat out the writing teams of “General Hospital” and “The Young and the Restless.” Watch Carlivati’s acceptance speech below. 12. Currently airing its second season in national syndication, “The Drew Barrymore Show” from CBS Media Ventures is expected back for a third season beginning this fall. There’s a catch, however. According to Broadcasting & Cable, the talk show will be split into two half hours which can be run as a one-hour block back to back or separately. The outlet reports that CBS-owned stations will be pairing one of the half hours of “Drew Barrymore” with their local news in top markets while the second half-hour will air on duopoly stations (ie. 17. CBS Television Service, Inc. and CBS Studios Inc. have been removed as defendants in the wrongful termination lawsuit brought by actress Briana Thomas last August, Soap Opera Network has learned. Thomas is a former background actress who appeared on “The Young and the Restless” in 2018 and 2019 as a barista. The motion to dismiss the network and its producing studio was filed by attorneys for Thomas on February 18 and accepted by the court on February 22. Sony Pictures Television Inc., Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and “The Young and the Restless” executive producer Anthony Morina remain as defendants in the case brought by Thomas wherein she alleges that during the time Morina had been the show’s supervising producer he sexually harassed her on a number of occasions, stating he would cozy up to her and give her compliments about her looks, often telling her she could “really be something” on the show. After rebuffing him and his advances, including his offer of a “private acting lesson,” Thomas alleges she was subsequently fired from the show. In early February, Morina filed his legal response to the lawsuit while Sony filed its legal response in December. Additionally, attorneys for Thomas filed a request for dismissal for defendant GEP Cenex, LLC to be dismissed “without prejudice.” The court granted the request without waiving court fees or other costs. The court did the same for its granting the same request for dismissal against CBS. A jury trial remains scheduled for March 2023. Courtesy of Paramount+ “Ever since I was a kid, I have been awed by the imaginative world Gene Roddenberry created. Recently, I boarded a flight to LA to discover that the man in the empty seat beside me was the one and only William Shatner, having himself just returned from space. I could barely put two words together but ultimately I managed to say hello and we chatted. “I’m not one who usually believes in fate but this was more than a coincidence. And of course I had to get a picture,” added Wesley. “So thanks Mr. Shatner for the good company. And for seating us together, my thanks to the great bird in the sky. Can’t wait for all of you to see our Captain Kirk on your screens.” Debuting Thursday, May 5 on Paramount+, “Strange New Worlds” is the sixth original “Star Trek” series on the platform. After taking time off to film his new Disney Channel original series, “The Villains of Valley View,” “General Hospital” star James Patrick Stuart is back on the set of the daytime drama series filming scenes as Valentin Cassadine. “Blessed to be back on the ‘General Hospital’ stage this week,” shared Stuart on Twitter this morning. “LOVE that place. Amazing and gracious people who achieve the impossible all day long.” He tagged co-stars Finola Hughes, Cynthia Watros and Nancy Lee Grahn in his post, likely indicating who he’ll be sharing scenes with when he pops back on screen in a few weeks. He also tagged the show’s executive producer, Frank Valentini. Last month, Stuart announced he had filmed up to least eight episodes of the Disney series which will release worldwide this summer on both the linear Disney Channel network and the Disney+ streaming service. “Missing ‘GH’ very much and happy to report Valentin will be back in March,” he wrote at the time. Created by Chris Peterson and Bryan Moore, the series also stars Isabella Pappas (“Finding Alice”) as Amy/Havoc, Lucy Davis (“Wonder Woman”) as Eva/Surge, Malachi Barton (Disney Channel’s “Stuck in the Middle”) as Colby/Flashform, Reed Horstmann (“The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia”) as Jake/Chaos and newcomer Kayden Muller-Janssen as Hartley. 21. While "One Life to Live" had greatly improved its ratings, ranking above both "All My Children" and "General Hospital" among Total Viewers, at the time the cancellation announcement was made the show had already been axed by the higher ups. albeit without telling the show's cast and crew. It was too late to reverse course as they were already planning on giving away the show's time slot and they already had cheaper replacements in place with staff hired and at the ready. "General Hospital" only survived because of Brian Frons advocating for the show and the complete and utter failure of "The Revolution." Had "The Revolution" performed better, "GH" would have been axed too as there would have been no slot for it on the lineup.
  22. The exceptions were both half hours of “Let’s Make a Deal,” “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna”* and “General Hospital,” which shed a mere -1,000 viewers compared to one week earlier. “The Young and the Restless” (3.441 million) improved for the second week in a row despite preemptions on the West Coast on Tuesday, March 8 and Wednesday, March 9 due to CBS Sports coverage of the “UEFA Champions League” games. The same can be said for “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.936 million) which was also preempted on the West Coast on both days. The second half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.863 million) lost -16,000 viewers week to week while the first half-hour (2.479 million) lost -50,000 viewers due to “UEFA” coverage, more so due to stations on both the West Coast and East Coast which typically airs the show in the afternoon slot after “The Talk.” Speaking of the daytime talk show, the series did not air on Tuesday or Wednesday due to “UEFA” coverage. Despite that, the show was up +12,000 viewers week to week, averaging 1.482 million viewers. 24. As previously reported, Joshua Benard is returning to “General Hospital” on the Wednesday, March 16 episode. Unlike his previous stint in 2018 where he portrayed a younger version of Sonny Corinthos in flashbacks, Benard will instead appear on the soap as a college classmate of Josslyn’s (Eden McCoy). In a clip provided by the soap in anticipation of Benard’s return to the series, Josslyn is shown studying for a midterm at Charlie’s Pub when Adam (Benard) shows up to join her. However, considering Josslyn’s apprehension since the tape of her and Cameron (William Lipton) having sex got shown in class, it’s no surprise to hear Adam tell her, “I’ve actually been thinking about chemistry lately.” He clarifies, saying, “Ever since I saw you naked, I just…” From there the clip ends. To find out whether Adam turns out to be a disgraceful classmate or what is heard coming from his mouth is actually just thoughts going through Josslyn’s head of what she perceives others are thinking, make sure to tune into today’s episode of “General Hospital.” In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Benard, the real-life son of Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) reveals he’d love to come back to the series to play opposite his dad, something he didn’t get to do either time he’s appeared on the soap. “I really hope, one day, to get to do a scene with my dad on the show,” he says. “That’s the goal. So, my final word is, get me back on the show!” As for working with McCoy, Benard notes, “Eden’s great! Everyone was saying that we had great chemistry on-screen, and I think we do. I think she’s a great actress and it was cool working with her because it was free-flowing. With Eden, it was just easy. I just met her on set and we did it, no rehearsal, no nothing. It was very fun, very quick, and you have to get it . You have to be on your toes; there’s no messing around!” Watch a scene from Benard’s appearance below. 25. Looks like we’ll be seeing plenty of Zach Tinker as Sonny Kirakis on “Days of our Lives” now that it appears that the actor is on contract with the daytime drama series, according to the latest show credits. First appearing as Sonny in the Peacock limited series “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem,” Tinker reprised the role in December in the show’s first-ever original movie, “Days of our Lives: A Very Salem Christmas,” which was also released on the streamer. Despite previously portraying the role on the two “DAYS” projects, Tinker didn’t appear on the mothership series until the Thursday, March 10 episode alongside on-screen love interest Chander Massey (Will Horton) who sadly only appears in a recurring capacity due to other obligations. The role of Sonny Kiriakis was previously portrayed by Freddie Smith. In an interview featured in the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, on newsstands now, Massey told the publication of his full-time job as a data visualization specialist at a health care analytics company based in Atlanta which makes things less practical in terms of scheduling appearances on the soap. “I pop in and out of DAYS, so I build up enough PTO at my real job,” Massey shares. “When ‘DAYS’ asks if I want to come out for a week, sometimes I do double duty. That means cutting it a little close in terms of meetings and things like that when I’m in Los Angeles. It’s just earlier days. My company is on East Coast time. So if I’m jumping into meetings at 8 a.m., it means 5 a.m. on the West Coast.” Courtesy of Peacock “Sometimes I can take the time off,” Massey continued. “I’ve done it several times, and it seems to be something that I’ve shown my company I can manage, that my productivity won’t fall off. I’ve been able to make it work so far, luckily.” He added, “Of course, there’s the reality that when you’re on contract, they have more invested in you. They can spend more time making a story for your character. When you just come in every now and then, obviously, for logistical reasons, you can’t really be the center or integral part of a big storyline. I don’t get the meaty stuff that I used to get, but it’s still fun to see everybody and pop in.” The news of Tinker being placed on contract was first reported by Jason47, the ultimate “Days of our Lives” historian, per the official show credits displayed on the Tuesday, March 15 episode. Soap Opera Network has since independently confirmed Tinker’s being placed on contract.
