DAYS: Call him Patch!

It's P&K carved onto the roof of the loft building, and Shawn and Belle referred to them as Patch and Kayla. I think some of the characters should, too. Especially Max.

P&K is carved onto the roof  ?????????? I'm guessing it wasn't carved by Steve or Kayla, that must have been the work of someone else.

Maybe P&K was carved by Phillip and Chloe? Both are so dumb they probably spelled Chloe's name with a K, LoL

Whoa you're really going to stop watching just because they're calling him by his name?

I still refer to him as Patch, but it's not a big deal to me if they call him Steve

JointStrikeFighter it was an amazing love story. Probably the most passionate, over-the-top, grand love story I've ever seen tackled on a soap.

Have you seen clips of their old scenes? I can put a few of their key scenes online for you (and there are quite a few already online) if you haven't seen them, but you really have to see what them to appreciate how amazing they were (and how amazing the writing was for them).

This has got to be a joke right?

Postwhoring because thinking about Steve's issues and the walls he put up with Kayla reminded me of this really great scene between them. And thinking about that scene also reminded me just how good the writing used to be on this show. They used to have actual conversations about feelings and motivations. The characters weren't black and white and they were driven by things beyond revenge or self-preservation.

I went to rewatch the scene and decided to transcribe it so you guys can see what I mean. Can you imagine a scene like this on today's show?

Context: Steve and Kayla are in Stockholm with Roman and Hope trying to rescue Marlena from Orpheus (who was it who said we'll accept outlandish situations if the characters are real is dead on). This is about 6 months into their relationship during which they've moved from Steve acting like a thug around Kayla, into an awkward, mis-trustful friendship and now they've become real friends. There've been a few moments filled with sexual tension to this point but Steve always finds away to push her away, and they've never even kissed. On this trip to Stockholm, Kayla's learned a lot about Steve's past, before he lost his eye, when he and Bo were good friends in the Merchant Marine. She's learned he's a gourmet cook and that he had good, close friends who obviously loved him dearly. This conversation takes place on one of their last nights in Stockholm:

Kayla: I want to make another toast. I'm seeing another side to you, Steve Johnson, a side that I like. "To a new phase in our relationship."

Steve doesn't drink and pulls the glass away from her lips

Steve: Wait a minute, baby. We're not starting anything here are we? I mean, just because I cook for you one day doesn't mean we're setting up housekeeping or anything like that.

Kayla: (a little hurt) That's not what I meant. By new phase, I just meant that maybe we were getting past all the sleazy acts and defense mechanisms and moving into some sort of relationship that was... that was honest. You know, friendly. Where we could be friends, and maybe sit down for a little meal and have a nice conversation, and just be friends to one another. Is there something wrong with that?

He reaches out and grabs her by the back of the neck, pulling her over to a mirror on the wall.

Steve: Come on

Kayla: What are you doing, you're hurting me

Steve: Come here.

He stands beside her, holding her in front of the mirror with him.

Steve: You want to know if there's something wrong with that, huh? Do ya? Do ya? Look at me, it'll tell ya. Look right there. (Points to their side-by-side reflections in the mirror) That's it. Right there, you see? You see that pretty little middle-class girl there? Look. Look! Sugar and spice. Everything nice.

Kayla: Stop it.

Steve: Come on, baby. Look at the guy next to her. The beat up face, the patch over the hole in his head. You see him?

Kayla: Why are you doing this?

Steve: You talk about honesty, baby, let's get down to the nitty gritty here. This is the honest truth. It may not be pretty. It may not be nice, but it's the honest truth and you better like it. So stop telling me about new phases in relationships because there can't be any kind of relationship between two people as different as you and me. Not now. Not ever.

Kayla: Would you let go of me please?

Kayla pulls away from him and the mirror.

Kayla: I don't understand you. Someone comes along who has a good feeling about you, however small that feeling might be. Look how you treat them. Well I have a tip for you, Steve. People don't like acts. And that's what you're doing here, you're putting on an act. But I want you to know, whether you like it or not, I can see right through you.

Steve: (shouting) You can't see anything because you don't know me.

Kayla: (quietly) You're scared. And maybe, just maybe, I understand why. But for some strange reason I keep making the mistake of expecting you to be tougher. Maybe brave enough not to do it anymore. Oh, I know it takes a lot of courage. You don't think I haven't been hurt before? You think none of this scares me? All I'm saying is to be someone's friend is a gamble, and yeah you might get hurt. It's a good possibility. But I'm willing to take that risk if you...

Steve shakes his head no

Kayla: Forget it. If this is what you want, who am I to argue (starts to walk away)

Steve grabs her arm and whirls her toward him.

Steve: This isn't what I want. Look at me. Do you think I want this?

Kayla: Yes, I do. Because it's something for you to hide behind.

Both shouting now

Steve: Hide behind!? What about all those pretty words you shove at me? Aren't you hiding behind those?

Kayla: I just opened up my heart to you!

Steve: Oh, don't give me that. You didn't open up your heart to me. All you did was point the finger at me. You talk to me about taking risks. Why don't you take a risk right now? Come on, baby. Show me how it's done. Get right down in that gut of yours and tell me how you feel, tell me what's there, right now.

Long silent pause while they stare at each other.

Steve: You can't do it, can you? Well then I'll tell you something. You say I'm scared. You're right. But what really scares me the most is that you won't open your eyes. You won't see me with those pretty blue eyes. You close your eyes and you see somebody else, somebody that I'm not.

Kayla: You want me to tell you what I see Steve? Is that what you really want me to do?

Steve: No, because you don't see me!

Kayla: I see someone who's stubborn, who's bitter, someone who's determined not to fit in. You're an outcast, and you will fight anyone, anyone that disagrees with that.

Bo interrupts the scene.

That is one of my favorite S&K scenes!

However, I can't see a scene like that EVER being written today :(

Producers and network "executives" want short scenes, short speeches, lots of white on the page, characters interrupting each other every 10 seconds -- all in the name of "pacing" to (ostensibly) appeal to the "younger" audience ("Make it like 'Gilmore Girls'")...

But all it is, IMHO, is an attempt to cover up the horrible acting much of daytime is now subject to. Can you imagine some of the newbies (or even many of the "vets") trying to pull off this scene? It wouldn't and couldn't happen.

And just to note: I was a pre-teen when I watched that scene the first time, and I KNEW it was good. S&K were my favorite characters, not the drippy teen set of Jennifer, Frankie, Glenn... There are teens that LOVE Erica (AMC), Adam (AMC), Reva (GL) -- because they are compelling characters!!!! The age doesn't matter!

I gotta go lie down now...

Thanks, GBB. Great scene. And I like how it sort of came full circle later when they have a date on New Year's Eve (I have the scenes, hoping to get them up on youtube soon) where Kayla pulls Steve to the mirror. They're all dressed up and look great and he's finally begun to let himself have this relationship. They're standing there and she reminds him that he made her look in the mirror and now she's making him look and see the reality that exists now.

I love these two.

I was 12 at the time this scene first aired too, and the teen storyline did nothing for me either. Steve/Kayla were what kept me tuning in. This story and the acting was amazing.

If anyone wants to see it, I can put the scene up on youtube.

I want him to be called Patch on-screen, and frankly, I won't be watching again until he is. Steve is a sissy name. "Steve and Kayla" doesn't work for me, but "Patch and Kayla" does.

Thats your choice, but if you are watching a show just to hear him be called a nickname then why even watch? Steve=Patch, its a nickname. From reading others post it seems Steve was nicknamed Patch because of his past, so if he has moved on and became a better person than he should only be called Steve now. Thats how I see it anyway.

Why would he be called Patch now if he had been called Steve for years before he left the show? That makes no sense whatsoever.

Thanks for posting that scene, it's great. I'm a little tired of the bad boy tries to convince good girl he's not good enough for her plot, but SN and MBE are such great actors and had such awesome chemistry that I've really loved what I've seen of them. I hope they get some great stories once Steve gets his memory back.

Does anyone have a clip with his first appearance in '85?
