GH: TV Talk Show Host Guest Stars

John Oliver fans can soon see him far from his desk on Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, as he has taken on a very different screen role: guest-starring on General Hospital for a three-episode arc.

That’s right, the Emmy-winning late-night host will be dropping in to Port Charles for the episodes airing July 2, 3, and 6, and the host announced that new role on the June 28 episode of Last Week Tonight.

  • I find him tedious most of the time but this is fun stunt casting, what something like Franco should have been back in the day.

Yeah, my tolerance for his show is limited at this point but he is a funny guy and it's a fun choice IMO.

I have no idea who this guy is.

He's a British exodus from the Daily Show who yells a lot.

Why did I know that after his plea GH would be the soap with the initiative to get this done?

this would have been such an obvious get for BTG to have him interview Martin.

Bringing over what I wrote on the Days thread:

It's only three episodes for Days, and three episodes for GH. The SOD headline "joins" is misleading. John Oliver said, that since Stephen A, Smith recurs on GH, then he John Oliver could appear on a soap. (he said that before he was hired on GH). He wanted to do it for fun, he wants to play a character and not himself. He said he wanted to have his character be a bad person or a character that impacts story, and must have a weird character name, so basically a dayplayer who impacts things briefly. He also said that if hired, he would take it seriously and act to the best of his ability for whichever soap hires him. I don't think he expected it to be two soaps. Presumably he's a different character on each.

I'm sure Frank fell in love with the guy and wanted to offer him a three-year contract on the spot.

re: thread title "GH: TV Talk Show Host Guest Stars"
The way I see it, John Oliver is not a TV talk show host. He doesn't have guests. (Although Jon Stewart's show has guests, John Oliver's show does not.) I don't know what to call his show. He might be in the Emmys category of "talk" or "late night" or whatever, so from that perspective, the thread title is correct.

John is the sole person on his show. He tells a few jokes, then does a twenty-minute segment on a news topic -- he does serious in-depth analysis of the topic, but interjected with snark and jokes. He uses a comedy framework to tell a serious story each week.

But it doesn't seem like a traditional talk show. Not sure what you'd call him, maybe a "comedic news commentator". LOL. A few times a year, someone might make a 2-minute cameo on his show to illustrate a point, but otherwise there are no guests.

In my opinion, his show is actually quite informative and I like it.
