BTG: First-ever role recast!

One fun thing to think about in all of this - it'll require an opening update, and I wonder if they'll move some people around, add/drop others, etc.  Usually when they have to update an opening, they make more changes while they're at it, don't they?  (other soaps)

I dumped X a long time ago, but if this has actually generated real engagement - it's a huge win for BTG because that means fans care.

And, who knows, if the recast doesn't work, it's not like that can return to OG Ted.

There's plenty of precedent for that in the soap world with my favorite promo being *The Real Greenlee returns to AMC*

They’ll just superimpose his head on to Johnson’s body in the opening credits. A dollar’s a dollar.

I try not to read too much into social media responses funneled through the people who share it on this board.

Two tweets = the interwebs are LOSING it over this one! I don’t think the show will ever be able to recover from this foolhardy decision, CBS is quaking! The NAACP bout to sue itself!

Well, the opening is only contract players, and outside of the main four (Tamara Tunie, Clifton Davis, Daphnée Duplaix, Karla Mosley), they are all listed in alphabetical order. So, assuming Keith D. Robinson will replace Martin Johnson in the same opening lineup ("opening B"), the new listing would be:

  • Tamara Tunie
  • Clifton Davis
  • Daphnée Duplaix
  • Karla Mosley
  • Alex Alegria
  • Lauren Buglioli
  • Sean Freeman
  • Ben Gavin
  • Trisha Mann-Grant
  • Ambyr Michelle
  • Colby Muhammad (current closing face)
  • Keith D. Robinson (new closing face)

I cared about Maurice Johnson losing his role only because I thought he was doing a decent job, and I hate seeing competent people let go. So I posted about it for a few days, and I was ready to let it go after the weekend.

Much of this continued talk is due to Maurice himself. His continued and varied posts have certainly blown this up. I'm not blaming him, but that's just a fact.

I think this has garnered so much attention is not just that fans love Maurice Johnson. It's also seeing MULTIPLE other actors who are WORSE than mediocre. It's saying "How can you recast Ted when ______________ is so bad in his/her role?" Casting had more than one bad day.

We've talked a lot about Derek, but how in the hell did the actor playing Tomas get hired? He is absolutely terrible. Yes, he's good-looking, but there are HUNDREDS of hot and sexy Latinos looking for roles. GH just cast the role of Marco with a stunning looking guy who is also a very good actor. How did BTG misfire so badly? That's not the only role that's a miss, either.

A new soap was bound to have problems. The ages on this show are a complete mess and shoehorning in Cady McClain is a problem. The fades at the end of scenes are awkward as hell, and the way yesterday's show ended was a complete "HUH?"

So yeah, they have things to work out and work on. I just see firing Maurice Johnson as an unforced error.

A soap generally does not wait to see what the fans think if they feel internally they need to recast for whatever reason. Certainly not a new soap. They just do it. I'll miss MJ but I never expected them to check with me, lol.

There are plenty of people I would rather see go first but I am not going to fuss over this when we are what, less than 30 episodes in? I don't see Cady's character as a huge problem, and I expect most of the actors I don't care for to get culled.

Oh I didn't even realize it was alphabetical order - good eye!  I just knew the first four were the main family members, and I assumed the rest were grouped together based on storyline (like Leslie/Ted, the sisters, etc.)

We're now into YIKES territory.

Maurice Johnson "left" with his head held high, taking that high road. Now we're getting this???

It smacks of swerving hard to get on that low road. I can't imagine anyone at BTG enjoying this, and I can't imagine this helps MJ get his next role.

    • Thanks!   Was anyone watching during this time? Wondering how Peggy’s rape played out onscreen. It just seems cruel to subject the Brooks family to this trauma a 2nd time.   Feels like the writers have already given up on the character of Jennifer, even though she sticks around another year-plus. She should be a passionate and fierce protective mother, but instead she seems just reactionary (and not even mentioned in this recap) This was also the case in ‘73 when Chris was raped. The writers are definitely more invested Stuart as the Brooks parent.
    • BTG got another SNL reference at 00:50  CONTEXT (so it isn't misconstrued) in this joke swap segment, Michael Che frequently makes his white cohost Colin Jost read racist jokes written by Che.

    • It's obvious that Israel's presence is a major divisive issue, and this is something that the EBU needs to deal with. According to the now published results Israel got 13 out of a possible 19 max points in the semi-final, and while their song isn't bad there's no way they would get those numbers without some kind of manipulation/political voting. They are clearly using this contest as a way of improving their somewhat tarnished reputation. I know that some people are comparing this to the massive sympathy votes that Ukraine gets and which propelled them to victory in 2022, but I feel that that was a more genuine show of support than this concerted effort from Israel to influence the televoting. I even had an ad on Youtube from Israel in Swedish(!) asking for votes! It might not be against any rules, but it feels a bit icky nonetheless.
    • Yeah, as you wrote, an Israeli win would have been a political disaster. Congratulations to Austria. 0 points from the televoting to Switzerland was a disgrace. Other than that, I really enjoyed the show ... but I'm also glad that Eurovision season is over

    • Hahaha Sorry if I was too negative, I just started typing and typing once I got going hahaha
    • @dc11786 Thanks for taking time to answer my various questions, along with giving your thoughts on the different writing teams. I wonder why they didn't just have Ryder and TR leave together if Jane was going anyway. The discussions over the last few pages have made me more interested in watching these episodes than I have been over the years - without the extra details and analyses provided, these years can be difficult to decipher (not helped by how often Jo seems like a side character).
    • I didn't think this was very good (I've never yet seen a good episode of this revival), but you do get a lot of Michael Stroka. And if you are a Donna Reed Show fan, you also get Paul Petersen.
