Well, I quite liked Carson's singing. Love the idea of Abi playing Marlena in the film. So glad Marci Miller came back, she's much better as Abi.

Why did they keep swapping between her and the other actress btw?

Abi pretending she was recast in a play in second grade and getting upset to prove to Chad she can act was bloomin hilarious

Just for discussion sake, and not to defend or compare offensive behaviors, but to those who object to Ben ever being written as a romantic hero, should the same rules apply to Sami, who drugged Austin in order to have sex with him without his consent (or at least make others think they had non-consensual intercourse)?

In other words, does the classic soap tale of people being redeemed by the power of love no longer work for today's generation of soap fans?

To be fair, and keep the record straight, Sami shot Allen (in the crotch) and EJ (in the head) with the intent of killing them and she kidnapped baby Belle in order to sell her.  While maintaining her status as the romantic lead of the show for over decade.

So, the question remains, can soaps no longer use stories about characters being redeemed by love?

For me, a huge difference is that no one is going around Salem talking about what an amazing person Sami is. The town doesn't sing her praises. They're not talking ad nauseam about how she's redeemed and changed and just the greatest woman to ever walk the earth despite everything she's done. The family members of her victims aren't berated for not liking her. Sami is a hypocritical bitch and the whole town knows it and the people of Salem are allowed to not like her because of the things she's done. None of this can be said about Ben. I will never get over Ciara bullying Eve for not liking for the man who brutally strangled her daughter to death. The insane propping is one of the major reasons why Ben simply does not work.

I admit that I am never going to win this argument, but I'm bored on a weekend night with nothing but time so here it goes:

To use your example about Eve, after Sami was wrongly convicted of killing Franco, Kate was vilified by everyone in Salem for hating Sami.  Kate lost her job, her fortune, and the respect of her children. Even though Sami withheld the information that Will was Kate's son Lucas's child, falsely accused Lucas of abusing Will, and assaulted Kate.

While I agree that few defended Sami (with the notable exception of Roman), her felonious intentions were always justified, and the audience was meant to take her side in romantic stories, because we were supposed to root for the redemptive power of love.

I have been thinking really hard about your question since you first posted it - which is great actually; love that you got me thinking even though I don't have a good answer! Thanks for a great conversation starter - and one thing I can immediately spot in those examples is that Kate's lie almost led to Sami's death (on death row). Which is akin to murder.
Sami's behavior at least in the examples you mention did not rise to the same level.
So in the immediate aftermath of that storyline I think it somehow explains why the consequences were more severe for Kate. She was literally ready to let Sami die. And the fact Sami spent time on death row for something she didn't do presumably functioned as Sami's "punishment" for her own misdeeds.

Now, Sami raping Austin was not presented or played as rape for cultural and sociological reasons and therefore the audience didn't receive it as it.
This has to do with the times being different: back then I imagine the idea of men being raped was not taken seriously, the entire issue of drug-addled consent was not treated as as clear-cut as it should have been and as it thankfully is now, and so on.
I am not sure how the old "scheming woman drugs guy to get him into bed" trope would be received nowadays but something tells me the audience would correctly recognize it as what it is and not shrug it as just a "scheme" like they did back then.
But they played it as a lie, rather than rape so it didn't have the same impact on the audience as a more "classic" rape would.
I do think if the story was told now, the response would be completely different. But it is hard to expect an audience to revisit its impression of a 25-year old storyline

Similarly the various acts of violence Sami committed against EJ felt like a tit-for-tat between them. Their relationship started with another rape (which I never forgave him for but most of the audience and writers did) and that entire toxic back-and-forth was just vile and toxic from both ends. And since both were equally culpable of crossing all kinds of lines, no one bore the judgement of the audience in quite the same way a one-sided crime would have.

I really think this is an interesting question in general: why certain crimes and/or characters do not get the same response from the audience as others.
I do not think Ben is a good example though because it is pretty-straightforward: killing several innocent characters is just a line that you cannot come back from.
ESPECIALLY since there is no remorse here. He didn't "redeem" himself. He just magically was written an excuse for his crimes and allowed to move on and be treated as a hero.

A better case for me - and this isn't the right thread for it - is Jason Morgan who IS a killer and not strictly for self-defense. The indulgence for that character is infinitely more problematic to me than Sami who is, by all accounts, correctly identified as not an outstanding citizen but has been on the receiving end of enough crimes and dastardly plots by others to somehow balance the karma in the mind of the audience.
Ben was given an excuse for the heinous crimes he committed and is never supposed to be on the receiving end of any consequences - direct or karmic. As AlexElizabeth said, there actually was an entire storyline where the mother of one of his victims was written as the villain because she couldn't forgive him.
This really makes it hard to swallow. You can't redeem a character who hasn't reckoned with their crimes. And the reason they don't write it is because they know they couldn't. There is just no way a serial killer can be fully redeemed in a way that would be satisfying enough for us to want him to be happy.

But I have been thinking a lot about what you said about the rape part and Sami's crimes. And that is a really good point I don't have a solid response to besides my above babbling.

I feel it necessary to clarify that I am not pushing a false comparison of Sami and Ben.  I am simply asking if it is a generation divide that younger viewers are no longer swayed by the soapiness of characters being redeemed by love.

I don’t think Sami has been “redeemed by love”. She is still scheming. I don’t think the writers wanted us to take her side when she bribed Xander to “out” Nicole at her anniversary party. We were supposed to think she was being a hypocritical bitch and root for her own affair being exposed to EJ as payback. Sure, Sami hasn’t murderer 4 people like Ben, but I don’t think we are supposed to view her as a romantic heroine either.

    • Yes it does!! And neglect! They let it drop so long and so often it doesn’t really have much meaning beyond another recurring character killed off. I kind of agree. I don’t want Emma to be SA’d, but he was a creepy professor perv at first, and we could have higher stakes if they let him be a scumbag for longer. Even to add more suspects, like Gio punched his lights out for grabbing Emma innapropriately. Or even better, she punches him, then Gio does too. He had the potential to be fun for a bit longer. I always love it when they do a shooting in the snow on this show lol.

I went back to see how teen Sami even figured out how to sell a baby in 1993, and the recap is unintentionally hilarious. The exposition is so blunt it feels like the writers drafted it between bites of lunch. Suddenly there’s a teen mom named Karen who sold her baby through a shady lawyer, and somehow Sami just… knows this man and pays him with hospital volunteer money. You can tell they were trying to make the whole thing “plausible” enough, but also knew the baby wouldn’t be gone long enough to justify a real subplot.  I know one thing, if Karen had confided in Jamie, Sami would've never met Steve Miller. Jamie knew that snitches get stitches. Not to be confused with the horrific Stephen Miller, who was 8 in 1993. AND Just to show the audience how shady the lawyer could be, he was played by this guy -- Character actor Terry Wills was cast as creeps on every sitcom in the 1980s.
    • I can’t help but to get drawn in by Dani and Andre but it just angers me that it’s so obvious that they’re not endgame.
    • John and Marlena may have committed adultery, but they weren't going to be smug creeps about it. "Roman, how do you feel about the name Isabella Titania Brady?"
    • -- It's always amazing to me that these "terrible breakdowns" (by writers so bad they shall not be named) are saved by incredible script writers. Every time

-- Kat is a "spoilt bitch" while Eva isn't??? -- Does Kat go too far with her mouth? Absolutely. But I get it. Eva has done some terrible things and continues to enable her criminal mother while Kat's family and boyfriend DEFEND her and show her love. -- Eva's complaints about Leslie are meaningless, because they're never backed up with anything. I'll take "spoilt bitch" any day before I take "criminal enabling hoe." -- It's nice that Martin accepts Eva, but the way he's handling it is eye-rolling. Eva gets hugs and smiles and full acceptance while Kat is trashed -- to Eva's face. -- Martin is STILL obsessing over the Kat conversation about sex that Samantha heard. Are you kidding me with this? And now Eva offers to speak to Kat. Yeah, very cute that the sister who screwed the other sister's boyfriend is the one with relationship advice. -- The food at Uptown looked pretty good today. Orphey Gene's food has yet to impress me, and I think it's clear that the country club chef is an alcoholic who cannot control his kitchen.
    • At this point, Marlena, John, and Roman all thought Roman was Belle's father. Sami had switched the initial blood tests. When it was time for another round of tests (because Belle was jaundiced), Sami panicked and kidnapped the baby.  Up until January 1994, Sami was the only one who knew that John was Belle's father. Next up were Stefano and Peter, once Stefano read Sami's diary (he figured it would reveal what was going on between John & Marlena). Stefano revealed the truth of Belle's parentage to Roman AFTER Marlena revealed her tryst with John (about two weeks later, to be exact). Marlena and John were the last ones to find out (during February sweeps, naturally). The John Black name was revived in September 1991.
    • The show has been getting better and better. Dani and Andre solidly "coupling" has been amazing. Genie Francis says soaps don't do couples anymore...maybe Dani/Andre can prove her wrong. To me they are the best couple on the show.  Eva vs Kat is always great. The show continues to find ways to keep it going and I'm all for it. Kat annoys me so bad. She is such a spoiled princess and acts it. I agree the comment about wishing Eva had been aborted was low. If that were the case, then why is she constantly getting in Eva's face? Why doesn't Kat just stay away and ignore her completely like she doesn't exist? I know. I know. It wouldn't be soaping.  This Hayley plot to kill Bill now taking a detour onto Izaiah has me curious. Does Hayley even know what she wants? I can't wait to see the fallout for Hayley and Randy....but not too soon.  I am tired of hearing about Winterfest already though. Can we get to it? lol
    • Great rundown of Long's second stint. Now you got me wondering...and again, thinking how real life impacted the direction of the show. We were talking about how practically the minute Long landed back on GL, she wrecked Ross and Vanessa and threw Alan and Reva together. Soon after, Alan started pursuing Vanessa again (because he was SO afraid of the "real" feelings he was having for Reva for the first time in his life, LOL). It's like she was determined to do an Alan/Vanessa/Somebody triangle at some point. She started one with Billy as the third side (well, actually, Alan was the third side) back in late 83/early 84 before Bernau exited GL the first time. So she had to drop it. But since Billy was gone this time, she seemed to decide, hey, I'll do it, only with Reva as the missing side of the triangle. Then Maeve left, messing that up! So I wonder, would she have had Alan and Vanessa marry? Maybe not, but I doubt Vanessa would have taken kindly to being overthrown for Reva. Could have been done in a really humiliating way, like after the invitations went out or even at the wedding. Maybe she would have helped Phillip with his plot to dethrone Alan. Lots of interesting possiblities.  I did like the way this story was handled. Chelsea was clearly more in love with Phillip than he was with her. Even "dead," no one could compete with Beth. So it was always doomed, but they showed how Phillip lost his way because he was obsessed with getting back at his dad. I also thought the relationship between Alan and Chelsea was a little...strange. He was very much in favor of their relationship, even though she came from an even lower background than Beth's. She also always fiercely defended Alan. Which has made me wonder if--ick--one of the many writing teams was thinking about putting them together romantically. (Of course, in my headcanon, where Alan has a youthful romance with the never seen Reardon sister, his fondness for Chelsea then makes perfect sense.) I always wondered why they never thought of putting Chelsea with Rick, especially after they butted heads over the death of her fiance. Seemed like a no-brainer.
    • Aubrey's Marina was great...but they wasted her...she could have been a new Nola (since she was living in the BH I would have had her find the N.R. + K.N. thing Nola carved in her bedroom...."I don't know who this girl was but she seems to be as unhappy as I am stuck here.") And have her set her cap for a good recast Shayne and take on the Old Bag Reva when she tries to interfere.."Oh please, I heard she was back in Oklahamo giving blow jobs behind the gas station, and she acts like she is Mother of the Year...God I hate her."  When they recast with that boring Kit girl and then...cutesy Mandy it was done. I love the idea of Billy and Van bonding over hell on wheels Peter. and kicking **** to the curb.Billy went to prison to protect him from Roger but that was never mentioned when Billy returned. Peter and Aubrey's Marina would raise Hell together..do a Nolaredux  in that he bangs her, she gets preggers, passes that off as Shayne's with Ole Bag Reva suspicious...I could see Marina ringing a bell to get the Ole Bag to bring her some ice cream...."But Grandma...oh you hate that I am sorry, okay, Grammy, you know I can't be stressed and oh, Shayne would be mad if I lost the baby..."ah what could have been.

Yeah, that's I mentioned the christening, when the truth comes out Reading October and November 1993, what is actually nuts is how much story they went through in a month. Because John's not even interested in Marlena at the time of Belle's birth.  He is rebound lusting for Kristen, who delivered Belle (funny mention in SOD about Marlena being unable to service at the Horton cabin on her "cellular" phone, I assume there was heightened vigilance to the exposition covering the tech of the time).   And, of course, since it was Kristen helping Marlena give birth during a stormy night, they both looked glossy, windswept, and gorgeous.    Justice for Jamie, I bet she's still holding Sami's secrets wherever she is.
