They all do really. Look at Days, they're over 6 months ahead for no discernible reason other than money. They keep hiring that hack Dena Higley. Days used to be a lot of things but it was anything but boring, however now we have endless scenes of people wandering in parks and plots that move at a glacial pace. It's televised sominex.

I forget who it is that keeps talking about daytime writer programs but I'd encourage them to show up at one of these studios with 200+ scripts and they'd be hired on the spot. They do not care about the quality.

Y&R is the closest thing we have to decent soap at the moment and even that is questionable because we've been sold this bill of goods before, article upon article about how they're going to do things differently and return the show to it's former glory. Remember all that nonsense Maria Arena Bell told the spin doctors at the magazines about how she and her team would put Y&R on the right path? They're all programmed to say that and we're meant to be the sheeple who sop it up.

Jill gets hired because she is tough, fast and cheap, but can still pull off vaguely expensive-looking stunts that impress the execs, usually by slaughtering costs elsewhere (veterans, sets). She's an old hack with a specific wheelhouse. As Darn said, it's all about who can produce on time and on budget line, period. It's the same in many areas of this business, but unlike other areas quality control is at a nadir in daytime.

CBS and Sony appear to have made a commitment to better quality writing-wise, and I think the show is coming along well. But it's still hamstrung by the sliced-down production, and that is not going to change.

JFP is not cheap actually her productions are usually very expensive costly aka metro court, gh fire, oltl train crash and the big plane crash at YR. Jill has 11 emmys out of 20 nods, EP 6 soaps and worked 40 years straight. 1976 to 2016. What exec producer in soaps can match her resume?

Right. They didn't talk on the phone?  Victor didnt go to his middle school graduation?

When Vikki said "When I agreed to let you stay here..." she sounded as if she was doing a favor for some distant adult relative down on his luck  instead of a mother raising a child who should be feeling guilty for not being a bigger part of his life (that's if we believe she wasn't)

The new producer Mal Young was on real hws of beverly hills having a chat with Erika Girardi about a job for her and he stated that all soap characters fall into a "trope" i.e. girl next door, hooker with heart of gold, etc.  Leads me to believe that what we're going to get from this regime is more completely predictable writing and totally uninteresting characters shuffled in and out while keeping the "vets" who are bullet proof and cannot be fired.  Was anyone on the edge of their seat wondering if Devon was going to survive the car crash?  Is it a question in anyone's mind if Cane and Lily will get a divorce this year or either one of them will stray?  The next time Jack gets stuck in an elevator will it go crashing to the basement?  The next time the ceiling falls on Jack and Victor will either of them die?  Since the answer is obviously no, the writers should be coming up with other ways to create drama but I don't see it happening.  There's a huge lack of creativity.

The other thing i saw on Mal Youngs twitter was fans advocating for the return of Michael Muhney as Adam.  Honestly, soap fans are the most loyal fans of any, they never give up!

Yeah, I feel like they are bending the story to push Villy in ways that don't make sense.  It's contrived nonsense. I'm one of the few people on this board that can stand Villy, but I dislike the way Billy is inserting himself into Victoria and Reed's relationship and the way they are making Victoria look incompetent as both a parent and a human being.  She has half a billion dollars, but she can't find an after hours handyman.

Mal Young isn't wrong that characters fall into tropes but they are so much more than that. Or they should be. Disappointed to hear him say that. No comment on Muhney and his stans.

Me too! I can't stand it. And they're not dropping it either. I've never liked the coupling no matter who is playing Billy. That drip playing Victoria doesn't help. EDIT: Oh My God. On Monday they even have Nikki propping Billy. Lawd! And wow, Victoria mentions coming home from boarding school to torture Ashley and Victor! Love the history mention but hate who's playing her.

I think Billy's 'hip' air guitar displays and such are obnoxious and OTT, but I don't mind him with Reed. They're obviously working overtime to rehab his and Victor's characters without rushing anything romantic with Victoria, and while some of those efforts with both men have been very hamfisted I think it's to their credit that they understand there's been a problem and are eager to address it.

It's best to put Billy with people where he can seem human and decent, and I think he's being very decent with Reed and Victoria, Traci, etc. It's never going to be perfect or exactly what I'd do - I don't care about Heinle's Victoria much at all - but it's a good effort, IMO, and I do like Jason Thompson in the role when Billy isn't just being an ass (though to be fair, Billy is often historically an ass).

    • Yes, they did.  I still have them.  I think there were three.  AMC and GH as well.
    • Ah okay, thats what I thought. I was hoping I missed the announcement somewhere. Thanks for the clarification.
    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
    • Other than hanging out with Liz, all of Lucky's stories have been stalled out or dropped; the relationship with his son; his wanderlust. He hasn't been involved in any of the action/adventure or con artist stuff. I don't think he's even had a scene with Sidwell since the latter came to town. He's a real after thought. I doubt he's long for the show.
