TV Shows You Watched In Spite of the Lead Character(s)

Note: This isn't necessarily a breakout character thread, as I'm sure there are quite a few TV shows where the lead was the most popular where some viewers (unpopularly?) preferred other characters anyway.

Ever liked a show in spite of the lead character (especially if the show was centered around him or her) either because you were underwhelmed by or couldn't stand the character?

If so, what or who was the show's saving grace that kept you from changing the channel and never looking back?

The first show that comes to mind for me is Gossip Girl, as I was (and am) underwhelmed by the chick that was supposed to be the center/star of the show - as well as the two guys that they'd originally propped up to be her leads. The reason can be summed up in two words: Blair Waldorf.

The second show that comes to mind is Mad Men, as there isn't a single character on that show (OK, save for the much-missed Sal Romano) that I can stand. The reason why I've been hooked on this show for as long as I have is because of the near pitch-perfect writing, though last season's obsession with Megan tried my patience.

Dawsons Creek is prob one of the leading examples. Dawson was basically universally hated and by season 3 much more of a supporting player.

Aside from that one, for me, Buffy is the next main contender here. I hated buffy, but i loved the show.

One Tree Hill with Lucas is another big one for me.

Will & Grace for me. Jack and Karen were why that show was a hit.

And though I never hated Buffy, she is far from my favourite in the Buffyverse of characters.

And as for current shows, Boardwalk Empire is the epitome of this for me. I HATE Nucky (and Steve Buscemi, whose appeal I don't understand), but I love almost everyone else, especially the characters they killed off last season which I'm still pissed about.

Thinking of the shows that I watched over the years, I have to agree that Dawson's Creek is the one show that definitely qualifies. I HATED Dawson with as much intensity as I loved Pacey. I rooted for Pacey to win Joey and my only regret is that he never got to beat the [!@#$%^&*] out of Dawson. I stuck with that horrible show into the fourth season because of my Pacey love. To this day, I have affection for Joshua Jackson because of Pacey.

I'm with y'all on Buffy.

And while I never disliked Anna Torv/Olivia on Fringe, in the beginning I found her kind of dull (and had a hard time not comparing her physically to Poppy Montgomery) but the show's premise, stories and the other characters kept me watching. Anna grew on me.

I do get a little tired sometimes of the Winchester brothers on Supernatural (esp. Dean) but I enjoy supernatural-themed shows--but this show needs to stop killing off its supporting characters. Yeah, I get it--it's supernatural and people die and come back (like soaps) but it's overkill (pun intended).

    • I've seen Jason interact with Mitch and annoy him. That's as far as I recall. I didn't even have a slight idea that Evan had a vendetta against Rachel... That came as a surprise to me. I thought Evan was Iris's dog and that's it. Now he's definitely more interesting.
    • Thanks for these. I can't recall -- did Evan's vendetta have any position on Mitch, or was it all about Rachel? @Maxim have you seen any Frames intreracting with Mitch in any way?
    • Thank you for the tag! It's always a pleasure to see these little pearls of memories.
    • Uh-oh. Today just might’ve been the first Paula/Jeanne stinker. I have a feeling whose fault that might be though. So, Doug III is getting a job at the Pub?  It’s good to see him interact with other characters. I enjoyed his scenes with Roman, even though the talk of Frankie and Max seemed a little random. And it also could be really interesting now that Tate knows. Days really need to start pushing their rivalry again. We need some follow up from the punch. Tying it all to Holly, to Sophia’s pregnancy, to the guys that Doug III owes money to could be good.  But yeah, wayyy too much Leo again in today’s episode. Seriously, has anything changed with this nothing character? I thought it was all Ron’s fault, but maybe Greg Rikaart is (partially) responsible for Leo being so insufferable.  And yeah seriously, Rafe needs to throw all of these people out of his house. Including Gabi

But I do wonder who’s the mysterious voice that Gabi overheard with EJ on the night he was shot. Based on yesterday’s episode, I have a suspicion.
    • Add me to the group of people who think that Brandon has improved. He has. There's no doubt about it. Especially compared to the beginning. And he's improving in a way that... it makes me think that he realizes what the issues are and is addressing them. Of course, he's no master of acting at this point... but I don't cringe as much as I did. And I've seen people in Bold... I won't even have to name names, because everyone knows who they are... who are becoming even worse than what they were offering in the first place. So... I'm happy that in BTG... people are actually blossoming and improving. It surely means that the atmosphere is creative and nurturing talent.  BUT and it's a big butt... his relationship with his husband is still so lacking and ghastly. I am craving to see more action from these guys. I want to see Smitty's character. If he has any.
    • Thank you. You guys come to the rescue again. I'll take a look later.   Thank you for the info!!! Now I find myself less confused. You and @DRW50 are amazing.
    • I know Passions used this trope with Ethan and Sam to drag out the paternity, but GH seems to speed through certain stories while dragging others.
    • For any other soap, I think I’d agree, but GH, I don’t know

    • Agreed, that there was some strange choices in the episode, especially at the end, but overall, that was some great drama that opens up the potential for so much future storyline. Kat vs. Eva having the most potential, especially over Tomas. I have mixed feelings about Martin/BC though. I thought he did pretty well in scenes with Smitty/MM, but the scenes of him confronting Leslie and of him throwing the books were bad lol she acted circles around him.  It’s similar to what Harding Lemay said about George Reinholt at AW; he could be brilliant in one scene, but then mediocre in the next.
