Teen Age Homosexuality?

The psycho fan base would never let that happen ever. A good, complete, nuance story of a friendship between a gay guy and a straight guy would be just as beneficial as a teen gay romance (possibly MORE beneficial because then it shows how to deal with the fact that the straight guy you're crushing on probably won't miraculously be gay himself), but it would be dismissed and branded as evil homophobia.

God bless yall, because I can't even begin to try to rationalize this story in my head. Even if I understand why Jack and co. would tease Shane for his asthma, I can't understand why Shane, who was always a hard ass of a kid, would be so affected by it. I mean, yes, there's the naked picture, but all of that stems from "Wheezy."

They could have gone with the gay angle if Shane and Jack became friends, and Jack found out Shane was gay (but Shane isn't attracted to him). Jack and his cronies would start to make the snide remarks and tease Shane, Shane would beg and plead for them to leave him alone (because he's not sure how his ol' idiot parents would react), but they keep on messing with him, and instead of putting a picture of Shane naked on the internet, they take a picture of him, cut off his head, and paste it on gay porn or something. Shane freaks out and disappears. His ol' idiot parents get wind of the whole thing, and ol' idiot mother is just worried about getting her son to safety and letting him know she loves him, but ol' idiot father is also concerned (probably MORE concerned) with getting Shane back to confirm that he's not gay. Story would take at least a semester to tell.

I was a teen in high school only three years ago, though, and I've been working with teens and bullying very heavily for a while now, and I still can't see it. Of course it's possible, and at the end, I won't put a strike against the story because of it, and plus, kids are bullied for embarrassing medical conditions all the time. I've never thought of asthma as being embarrassing, though. If Shane was in a wheelchair for something, that would be different, but I'm sure the show wouldn't go there so soon after the Matthew stuff (then again, this is ReRon). Or better yet, they could have made it something related to his bout with leukemia. I don't want to slight anybody who's ever been bullied for their asthma, but jeez...asthma?

Part of me wanted Shane to die from a severe asthma attack, if only to see whether Jack, who withheld his inhaler, could be held accountable. Anything to help this important story feel less half-hearted.

You know what? Now that OLTL is (about to be) no more? I say, go for it. Make Shane and Jack out-of-the-closet gay teens who fall for each other. It won't save the show, but at least Agnes Nixon's mandate for telling stories that are topical and envelope-pushing will be preserved.

Yes! It wasn't what I would do if the show was going on but [!@#$%^&*] it! Do it, who's going to stop them? Go for Shack! Viki, Dorian and Tina on five days a week! Bo and Nora humping all day long! Kish getting penetrative! Matthew and Danielle! Blair and whoever! Rachel!

I could understand Shane not fitting in once he moved to Llanview, moving to a new area/town while in high school, or in any other grade can sometimes be hell, speaking from experience of my own. But yeah, the asthma angle was lame, and difficult to believe. And like you said, a kid that had cancer as well? WTF kind of town is Llanview, where the rich kids with influential parents (Matthew) and cancer victims get picked on?

I was about to come here and serve up a reminder that, um, OLTL HAS officially been cancelled, so to suggest that this or that won't or shouldn't happen is a little, I don't know, ridiculous? Ironically, the cancellation has absolutely nothing to do with gay characters so I also say GO FOR IT! Let Shane and Jack get it on baby!
