He came across as very sweet and almost...noble, like Sam Groom as Russ Matthews on AW. I liked him a lot, but by the time McGillin took over as Greg Foster, the writing was on the wall and the original Brooks and Foster families were being phased out.

I was revolted that the show hired the worst of all Gregs, Wing Hauser, to play out the story about Liz Foster's death.

I know JLB had a very difficult pregnancy and was in a wheel chair off set. I think that this was the time Victoria Thompson (and others? ) subbed for her.

Another role quickly recast was that of April. Janet Wood was replaced by Cynthia Eilbacher who had previously played Jodie, the teen runaway.

Yes, I remember this well. The show used long, flowing gowns to disguise JLB's condition. At least she said in the press that when she was pregnant and highly emotional, the crew was very protective of her and tried to soothe her nerves.

Lezlie Dalton also subbed for JLB at this time.

And speaking of the good old days:

In 1973, actress-singer Mary Grover was originally hired to play Leslie Brooks on Y&R, and filmed a few weeks' worth of episodes. Bill Bell did not think she was ultimately right for the role, however, and Grover was let go before the show premiered, with all her scenes reshot with replacement Janice Lynde.

Mary Grover was pretty, and seems to be okay as an actress and singer, but I am glad that the show went with Lynde, who was mesmerizing in the role.

Here's a sample of Grover's work on stage.

And here are some clips of Janice Lynde as Leslie:

Actually, an aggressive female patient also tried to abuse "Jane" (as Leslie was called in the asylum because the authorities did not know her identity), which was quite daring for the time. She even stole Leslie's food. I was terrified watching the storyline. never knowing if Leslie would be sexually abused or starve to death.

I hate to say this, but while I found Mallory to be beautiful, charming and a very talented singer, I did not feel her acting chops were strong enough to convey the character's deep and conflicting emotions. Leslie changed a lot when Lynde left and Mallory took over. Instead of being like a fragile fawn with deep, fiery emotion just below the surface, Leslie suddenly had less depth, less raw emotion, and came across as...pallid. Rona Barrett's Daytimers published a snarky comment about Lorie rather than Leslie being the new focus of the show, thanks to, "...Victoria Mallory's colorlesss portrayal of the part...."

When Mallory first took over the role, TPTB had her suffer a miscarriage after her husband accidentally hit her in the stomach with a heavy suitcase. Jon Michael Reed wrote in Daily TV Serials that Y&R was trying to build sympathy for the "new" Leslie by making the character lose the baby, but so far  it had not been really  successful.

All this to say that while Mallory was adequate in Four L-era, I think the storyline would have been more effective and dynamic with Lynde in the role. The men's conflict choosing between the passionate, exciting and vibrant Lorie Brooks, and the tepid, restrained and colorless Leslie Brooks was...hard to fathom.

Bill Bell redid the Leslie story in the 80's when Ashley was put in the mental ward as Jane Doe and one of her roommates a woman named Ruth stole Ashley's food and threatened her daily. The actress who played Ruth went on to Bold & Beautiful to play the homeless woman Ruth Ann that Stephanie lived with on the street when she lost her memory and was homeless.

The Ashley in the psych ward story introduced the character of Leanna Randolph Love (Barbara Crampton). She hated Ashley for marrying Dr. Steven Lassiter (played by SFT's Rod Arrants) and tried to poison her.

Lance was more suave and sophisticated and had a laid-back, confident charm, whereas Lucas was less refined and had a quick temper, but was highly passionate and very loyal. Both men were quite appealing in their own ways, however, so choosing between them would have been pretty difficult. With Victoria Mallory as Leslie, the character lacked fire, substance and depth, so there was no real competition between such a restricted, colorless woman and Lorie, who was sexy, playful, witty, complicated, vibrant and fun.

I would have no trouble at all choosing between Jan Brady from The Brady Bunch and Mary Richards from the Mary Tyler Moore Show, or between George from Seinfeld versus Oliver Queen from The Arrow, LOL.

Bill Bell took qualities from the Foster and Prentiss sons and used them on B&B for the Forrester sons: Ridge, a Snapper/Lance hybrid, and Thorne, a Greg/Lucas hybrid.

Funny that John McCook played one of the Prentiss sons and then the father of the Forrester sons.

    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
    • Oh good, so I don't have to wait too long haha. I'm glad she cares about seeing Bill graduate. I'm guessing I'm in for a bumpy ride between Bill and Matt, if he's going to be his caretaker? Who else could it be, maybe Josh?

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
