I absolutely loathed this story, as well as the asinine Mr. Big nonsense. Low-brow science fiction did NOT belong on our once-adult, once erudite ATWT. For the record, I also hated the Ice Princess saga (GH), the Dreaming Death story (TGL), the Eterna drivel (OLTL), the devil possession garbage (DAYS),  and all the other ridiculous, campy, usually stupid attempts at melding sci-fi onto the soaps. Along with axing the vets and dismantling the shows' cores and themes, I firmly believe that the drive to this sort of material killed the soaps.

They quickly dumped that story...the audience hated it, and as if we needed MORE Dee/James/Babs/Gunnar on the show while everyone else (besides Tom, Margo, John and Steve Betsy) sat around.

Plus the accents and costumes were terrible! But it did lead into one of my faves (of the really stupid Dobsons stories) of James gaslighting Babs.  I did hate Gunnar and his over bite.

I think I posted some photos of that story many many pages ago...there's an episode of it that was put on DVD, isn't there? I can't remember. Someone may want to check AsTheWorldStillTurns on YT.

I think Jacqueline Schultz panned the story in her leaving interview.

@@vetsoapfan, so you don't care for any sensationalized story? Like the wonderful arc of Quint and Nola searching for the Golden cradle? If they are rooted in realism could you like them?

@Mitch: I'm starting to notice that a lot of people on here hated Gunnar. The Barbara/James gaslighting story was the story where James had her committed, right?

I will go and check that channel for some clips.

The Dobson's were hit or miss on ATWT during their two runs. I find it strange since their run on GL was flawless from everything i've read. From what i've seen of Gunther i was not impressed. Were Barbara and Gunther popular? Which was worse The Mr. Big story or Barbara's past life? What other outlandish stories took place during this time?

Gunnar St. Clair was on ATWT. Gunther  was the creepy waiter on Friends.

I think a lot of Gunnar was time and place. I liked him. But I think he was in a clunker story for a lot of his time on ATWT. He ends up rescuing Barbara from James, but then I swear, he's dead like six months later. And I would split it this way---Gunnar was Barbara's greatest hero, while Hal was her greatest love.

As for the Dobsons--they are probably the clearest case of pre-and post GH success and how it changed daytime. While I'm sure GL under them wasn't "flawless"---but it was traditional soap with a progressive tendencies. After GH's success with Luke/Laura/Ice Princess crap, every show throws in more adventure/sci-fi "twists" that deemphasize true interwoven drama.

Gunnar was a favorite of mine and loved Gunnar vs James story. I am surprised many didn't care for Gunnar. I am more shocked to hear CZ say that Henry(eww..) was a greater love to Barbara than Gunnar. She apparently didnt care for her pairing with Gunnar.

I've never heard CZ having problems with Hugo Napier. But you never know how much everything else influences their personal favs. Considering how little time they had together, and what a different person Babs was with Gunnar, I could get where maybe she and Henry were right for each other at the end of ATWT.

    • I tried following the news in Los Angeles at https://laist.com (independent public radio and news) They had up-to-the minute accurate info during the wildfires in January. There's no video, no impact to my mind as to what's happening. Trying other outlets, to get the truth, but it's hard.
    • That's a bit murky since that happened during a writers' strike. Assuming Kristen Marie had a 2-year contract she left about when her contract would have expired and Sharlene and Josie showed up right before that. Lemay was officially credited as HW from September 1988 but it seems very probable that his anticipated tenure influenced events that happened during the strike which started in April.
    • I've seen so many posters over the years who are bright, creative, well-versed in soap history, and who care deeply about the integrity of the genre. I'd put the shows' chances in their hands a lot faster than I would allow any of the "usual suspects" to take control of the dramas they've already helped decimate. When I returned to university in the 1980s, I created a bible for a new soap and presented it in my screenwriting class. It was in reaction to how badly I saw the network shows being butchered at the time. The creative process was thrilling; a total joy, and I still smile when I remember the positive feedback I received from the professor and my fellow students. I was used to seeing written commentary from professors on my work. This one wrote me a long, complimentary note on the final page of the bible, but also graded it 97%, A+. I was beaming ear to ear for days!

    • Thanks. I do wonder if Rose was meant to be more given the caliber of actress they hired. I remembered Sara and Peggy staying longer as they were still on when Soapnet started their repeats. I wonder if that was part of the reason they brought Jake's brother in.
    • Speculation about Missy Reeves' potential evolution on basic civil rights doesn’t change my opinion of her. My view is shaped entirely by her public social media presence—which I find unpalatable—and I have no interest in learning more beyond that. I simply liked Jennifer’s hair and dress. That’s as far as my admiration goes.

    • Cheryl was gone before Lemay came back but I agree with your thinking that he would rather a character from a family he introduced to the show than a family he did not originate.  I remember reading somewhere in the early 90's probably after DS left as writer, their was an either a writer or a producer who made a comment that their intent was bring the McKinnon family back to AW.  Would have made sense for the newer viewers from the 80's.  Much like Lemay's attempt to bring the Frames back from his writing in the 70's in his 1988 return
    • DePriest left in January 1988. According to the AWHP, Rose last appeared nearly a year before in February 1987 while both Sara and Peggy appeared as late as October 1987.
    • Annie was not brought in as an antagonist for Reva. Reva wasn’t even on the canvas when Annie first appeared in late 1994.
    • The speculation……….very entertaining.
    • I had forgotten that several Days stars came out strong against Melissa. Good for them!
