Guiding Light Discussion Thread

I can understand people like MG etc who voiced their opinion at work, and didnt make a lot of waves publicly as that is their job on the line (especially for the vet actors, older, working in a dying industry) and we see how vindictive they were. I can even understand Kimmer not coming out in the press and knocking Raunch and the MADD cow...but a line or two about supporting Michael and what is happening is terrible, etc. She had more power then anyone on the show (stupidly they thought she was their cash cow) and she didn't hesitate to go behind the scenes and whisper into the soap press ears things about behind the scenes actions  to keep her in their good graces...(most notorious is talking about Marj being fired and how she was so upset and worried as "how was she going to get a job at that age" )but nothing about Zaz?

It should be said that Michael Zaslow and his family launched a charity called "Zas Angels" and MANY Guiding Light stars went to those events to support Zaslow. I can't remember off-hand who, but one I do remember is Justin Deas brought his wife (Margaret Colin) and his two sons to one fundraising event.

and for those who are blasting Kim Zimmer, she headlined a Michael Zaslow event and asked her former "Doctors" co-star Alec Baldwin (who then a big star) to co-host the event with her (video below) - many of the Guiding Light stars were upset over how Zaslow was treated, and did everything the could to support his charity

Exactly. I don't know why Zimmer is the one getting smoke for the entire cast (especially given the above). I found plenty of her antics annoying BITD but I am never going to fault her for a) standing by her contract against Wheeler or b) doing what she could for Zaslow.

It's like whenever an entertainer passes away and all of social media is like, "Why hasn't his/her co-star from that movie they did back in '64 made any statements?"  Entertainers are not obligated to do anything except entertain us.  Period.

Zimmer spoke out about every injustice she saw on GL. The woman never met a grievance she didn't like. Even in her book, she casts herself as someone who always spoke out against injustices and when something was wrong on the show. IS she obligated to speak out against the Zaslow situation? No. Did she do charity work and support his family after his death? Yes and I think what she did was wonderful. (I can't stand Baldwin but good for him for hosting.) I just think it's telling she said nothing publicly  while he was alive and while they were vicious about him in the press while he was going through his battle with ALS. In her book, she had no problems calling other people out for not standing up for what's right.

I think all of this made sense with Josh's obsessive nature, which most writers who weren't Pam Long never seemed to tap into.

Beth Ehlers and Robert Newman had good chemistry, which helped (other than Kim he wouldn't really have chemistry with another woman until Crystal Chappell).

I never saw Harley that way, although she wasn't in the dynamic long before Newman left. I wonder how Curlee felt about Mallet/Harley. To me THAT was the pairing which changed Harley, draining her of all life and saddling her with a dull, sanctimonious [!@#$%^&*]. For the most part Harley never regained what had made her special (not helped by the Philip pairing, someone else who tended to drain life out of his partners).

I couldn't remember if they still mentioned Susan and Nick at the end. Thanks.

Usually, any gay man on a soap with AIDS was a short-term character and we often just saw them through the eyes of our heroine. GL had a friend in Lucy's support group (I can't remember his name, but I liked him). GH had Jon Hanley, Lucy Coe's dresser. We never saw any of their suffering (Lucy did have a moving reaction after Hanley passed away in real life). The closest was AMC, which in early 1995, when Julia Santos was becoming a nurse, had some very hard scenes to watch where Julia helped a young man who was dying of AIDS, and they were more honest in showing him in agony and in tears, saying he did not want to die, etc.

Thank you to everyone who answered my questions about the blizzard and Fiona, and Mary Ellen Stuart.

Sadly it was taken down.

Michelle Forbes and Cynthia Watros would like a word. I really dislike CC, so I can't comment on that.

I guess I never saw Josh as obsessive. Or maybe I'm too busy seeing him being a self-righteous jerk. It's interesting, I just caught a couple of eppys of him and Morgan, where he goes off on this rant about her behavior, and I swear, it was like watching him yell at Reva.

I guess for those couple of months maybe Harley was coming off like Reva Jr, but otherwise, nope. And I never thought the male population of Springfield adored her the way they did Reva.

I haven't watched Sonni/Josh that closely but anything I have seen is Sonni pining and being paranoid and being manipulated while Josh worries over Reva.

I didn't really see a lot between Cynthia and Robert, although they barely had a chance before Kim returned.

I do think Josh was a self-righteous ass, but many regimes tried to paint him as having to put up with Reva and her antics. Long was the one I think could admit in the writing that they were as bad as each other.

I agree that he was toned down...and admittedly there were periods later on where we could see him turning away a good thing because of Revamania and the damage this caused (everything with Annie in 96/97). I do think the Sonni story was a good window into Josh's obsessive, unpleasant nature as he only married her to get away from Reva, and then everything he did became about Reva when he returned to Springfield. It wasn't hard to see why Sonni went around the bend.

Rewatching GL 1991.

I CANNOT stand Mark Derwin’s Mallet. His attitude and behavior really turn me off. Seeing everyone in Springfield with their mouths agape when VI returns as Nick. The scenes of Alexandra seeing Nick were heartbreaking.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
    • Other than hanging out with Liz, all of Lucky's stories have been stalled out or dropped; the relationship with his son; his wanderlust. He hasn't been involved in any of the action/adventure or con artist stuff. I don't think he's even had a scene with Sidwell since the latter came to town. He's a real after thought. I doubt he's long for the show.

    • Seeing Nicole and Martin together reminds me of watching Alice with Mickey Horton in the 90s and 00s. The seem more like peers than mother and son.  The younger half of the cast (35ish and below) is playing younger, and the older half (35+) is playing older.

    • I'm anticipating most of the cast at the Nice location for a few weeks a la the Tuscan villa for Victoria and Ashland's wedding. I don't know why they bother. I'd rather see the money going into more regular home/office sets. This party has been a bust. No secrets revealed, break ups  etc. Ugly decorations and I'm going to slam the costuming again. Just the guests heaping praise on  Nikki  like she's achieved some magnificent milestone rather than just getting a year older.
