Was anyone checking for Peter Simon BITD?

I always thought of the P&G shows as placing talent above looks but then again it was the early 1980s when ABC youth movement was killing it in daytime.

I remember after he passed away there were some indications of that (I think there was a story claiming at his home he put a photo of someone he disliked in the toilet so that's what you saw when you opened it up...), but he was generally more discreet in the press. I'm shocked he was so crass about Hulswit, especially given his popularity with fans.

The show also did not try very hard to make Ed some sort of sex god (Marland immediately put him in a long term relationship). It was actually Hulswit who had more love with the ladies (at one point Rita, Holly, and Lainie Marler all had some type of feelings for him).

Anyway...this is only a partial episode.

I did ask, but later found confirmation that it was 6/24. I'm not sure why there seems to be a discrepancy with the German episode dates. At some point, I'll try to dig into it a bit more.

Yikes...I know Vanessa's a manipulative bitch at this point, but I'd never seen Maeve have anti-chemistry with anyone before.

Jane Elliott was/is a good actress... but sometimes a good performer just doesn't fit in on a show.  She just didn't fit in with the vibe/atmosphere on GL.

Someone in a previous message described her acting as intense and I think that could be why she just didn't fit into GL.

I still am amazed that not only did Mart H get fired as Ed, but that Peter Simon was hired without him even knowing he was going to be replacing Mart as Ed.  He didn't even know who he would be playing until right before he started on the show.

I still cannot guess what Marland's plans for Carrie were.

Was she supposed to stay around? Was her son supposed to play a part in the story? Was she supposed to go after one or two years?

I also wonder about Kelly and Morgan, as well as Jennifer. I doubt that they would be written out so quickly.

I didn't know that about Simon. What an awkward situation. You so often hear of soaps doing this, especially back then.

I think Jane might have been a good fit if they had brought her in a different way, but having Carrie initially be sweet as pie then she ends up being a murderer and having split personalities - it's a lot for people to deal with as at that time Springfield still seemed like a relatively normal place.

She would have been a smart pick for a Spaulding relative, although Jane may not have wanted to play that as she already had on GH.

I imagine Kelly/Morgan/Josh would have lasted longer.

I do wonder what he would have done with Jennifer. Maybe instead of being written out once Mark and Amanda got together, she would have ended up with Justin or Ross or Mike. She and Mike were a bit of a thing.

I read the plan was for Carrie to have therapy and integrate her personalities, with the end result being she couldn't stay with Ross because too much had happened and she wasn't the woman he fell for.

That might have resulted in some great scenes for Jane but perhaps Potter felt it might have not resonated with viewers as the ratings hadn't provided much evidence of interest in the Carrie story.

Re Marland/Ed- was there anything in the writing for Hulswit towards  the end of his run that showed that Marland didn't like the actor?

Allen Potter was against replacing Ed so was it P&G /Marland that ganged up?

    • Am I remembering correctly that the Madison's lived in a Spanish revival-style house? I have a vague recollection of the fireplace looking especially Spanish in style. It is unusual that Montecello had so many architectural styles.  Obviously, that might occur IRL.  But, look at other east coast soaps and there is a definitive style that is throughout (because it was styled by a set decorator) regardless of the income of the occupants.
    • @kalbir MSW was a powerhouse for CBS. Angela Lansbury was a superb actress. In 1985, TV viewers were tiring of the primetime soaps and the like. People wanted storytelling and MSW was great at that and had great guest stars. Storytelling -- an amazing and novel concept. CBS Daytime by 1985 was beating ABC so CBS was on the upswing.
    • I'd say just the opposite - conflict means they will find out and then be at odds. For the limited amount of time people on this show have conflict (if they aren't named Nina or Ric, I guess).
    • Totes mcgoats (aka I agree). But, now the character needs to move forward.  Clyde's exit was 12/11/24.  It is May.  She and Chad have been on one date. I don't think they've slept together. And she was only planning on sticking around for a year.
    • That is one of the best insults I've heard in a long time.  I burst out laughing when Kat called Eva that.  LOL Their scenes, of course, were really good.  Colby and Ambyr have so much chemistry.  The only thing I'd change is Kat saying "you're dead to me."  That's a phrase usually said about someone you care about.  I would've preferred something like "You will never be my sister," or something similar to that.  Nice contrast at the end with both mothers/daughters:  Kat comforting/consoling her mother, and Eva being locked out by her mother.  Yeah, I wasn't a big of fan of the singing either, especially after your daughter's life has been destroyed.  What?  LOL And I also agree with those that thought Dana/Leslie's scenes with the Dupree's didn't feel right since Eva is not a Dupree....unless she is.  But as of right now, she's not.
    • Trisha Mann-Grant, Ambyr Michelle, Sean Freeman are destined for bigger and better things. They need to move on as soon as their initial contracts are done.
    • Daphnée Duplaix and Trisha Mann-Grant on Instagram live, 5/5/2025 just concluded, saved here https://www.instagram.com/p/DJSsYb7PDv8/
    • I really need to see Anita in a scene that isn't with a family member. In fact, I would have preferred that she would have gotten rid of the mob and had a one on one with Leslie to lay down the law with her.  I'm going to say it, Mike Manning has been completely lifeless on this show. Other than people's superficial fondness for him, I don't get what they see in him as an actor. I never saw him on DAYS though. The show had another really strange cut right before the opening credits where it looked like they almost cut off Nicole mid-sentence.  Kat/Eva are carrying this show on their backs. Lock them in for lifetime contracts, I beg.
    • There's a 1980 scene of Victor and Katherine in the Chancellor Estate living room where they went over a contract that would put Victor in charge of Chancellor Industries, but it was rewritten that Katherine brought Victor to Genoa City so he could run Chancellor Industries.
    • Put me in the minority in being happy about Cat not being Abby. After the two adult recasts played tag with the role, it's time for a few years of rest. I have a huge list of things I hate about RC's writing, but that choice was not one of them.
