Ultimately, the Corringtons were a flash in the pan. They were best on SFT with some laughable plots; but they did revive the show.  Network execs thought they were brilliant but Texas was a bomb, never should have been made. Unoriginal, unfit for a setting for Beverly; and they were fired after six months.. They failed on Capitol after six months, failed on OLTL after six months, failed on GH after three months.  Joyce was hired on GL during Phelps/Doug Anderson time but was fired after several weeks.  She also was on the Santa Barbara writing team for a few months before being fired. They ended up writing Superior Court.

Nancy Pinkerton talked about Patti in an old 1977 mag interview saying that the she was an 'interim Patti Tate ' but didn't know it at the time. She says it was her first television job, she was inexperienced and the director was a bully and she felt she was treated badly. She states she was asked back 4 times but refused as that director was still there.

I recall in Both of Me' Mary talked about a director that she clashed with around that time - maybe the same person?

Maybe Nancy was non contract as they wanted to see how she worked out or were waiting for Abigail Kellogg to become available?

So the other night I stumbled across a Tumblr full of SOD synopses for SFT, dating back to at least the 70s. And I promptly fell down a massive rabbit hole reading them all. If any of you are interested, they’re here: https://classicsodsft.tumblr.com/

From this, I have a few questions:

  • I know Suzi was Eunice’s daughter, and John Wyatt was her main father figure. But was he actually her biological father?
  • Was Suzi born onscreen?
  • How long was Lewis Arlt on SFT for as David?
  • I know John James played Tom Bergman in the late 70s, but did he reprise the role when Tom returned in the early 80s?

Cheers in advance!

I can't answer all your questions, but:

-- Suzy's bio-father was Doug Martin.  So Suzy and Scott Phillips were half-siblings.  Also interesting -- because of the deaths of Doug and eventually Eunice, Suzy was actually raised by two people (John and Stephanie) who were not biologically related to her.

-- John James did not return to the role of Tom Bergman.  If I'm not mistaken, Tom was played by Robert Lupone, when the character returned.

Millee Taggart confirmed in a recent interview that her writing career started on Search when she ghost wrote scenes for her character, Janet.  She said it started during Ann Marcus's writing tenure in 1974.  She implied that she later continued to write the show during Ellis/Hunt stint using a male name, possibly Jackson Chase.

In the same interview, Courtney Simon (who played Kathy) revealed that Ellis/Hunt hired her as script writer on the doctors and she used the pen name Kate Brooks (named after her kids). Millee also wrote scripts at the same time as Heather Matthews, I believe.  Courtney recounted that when Ellis/Hunt were replaced by Lawrence and Ronnie Konnor, Lawrence called Courtney's house and when Peter Simon answered, Lawrence asked to speak with Kate which confused Peter who didn't know Courtney was using an alias. Peter thought Lawerence was calling about 3 year hold Kate Simon Hall (who's now a script writer on GH).

While Millee didn't reveal the following I believe she initially wrote ATWT under a pen name (KC Collier?)

Personally that whole storyline was what got me hooked on watching SFT episodes on youtube. I’ve heard that P&G played silly buggers with CBS and NBC over SFT, and the affiliates had issues as well with timeslots. I’m not a betting man personally but I would wager theoretically that if it had been in a better timeslot during that storyline, ratings would have gone up massively.

Jeanne Glynn was a creative writer who loved soaps.  She was with SFT for nearly two years and most of that time was head writer either alone, with CF or briefly with Madelyn David.  Her head writing tenure turned out to be the longest of anyone who came after her most of whom lasted under a year.  The problem was some of the casting and Ellen Barrett who seemed to want to turn SFT into Ryan's Hope.  Too many red heads running around, some bad casting (started by Joanna Lee who cast Kevin Conroy as a straight leading man and he was obviously neither) and supplanting Jo with Kate McCleary.  Not sure why Barrett couldn't get a little more creative and NOT center the show around an Irish family.

    • That was such a dark story. I never liked Swamp girl after that. And then the dating your cousin thing. I think wasn’t Max in a triangle with two of his cousins?
    • Thank you, @j swift.  I'm probably more sympathetic to Draper Scott than most audience members are -- even though I'm absolutely CRAZY about Ann Williams & her bizarre Margo Huntington character

The more I watch these episodes -- and I've watched several of them a zillion times, I'm ashamed to admit -- you realize there's a WHOLE lot of passive-aggressive hostility brewing inside Margo Huntington about Draper.  She wants to take April AWAY from him and recreate the childhood that she never got to experience with April, because of the adoption 25 years ago.  Draper has sense enough to realize how heartless and vindictive Margo really is about other people's lives and their feelings, but he bites his tongue rather than poison his wife's mind about how horrible her mother really is.  And I admire him for that.  He's a sweet boy.
    • Unfortunately, as the 90s wore on, Felicia started wearing as many gray and neutral tones as Giorgio Armani and Donna Karan could produce, and the shoulder pads deflated to a drop sleeve.
    • I think Dante is reacting how most parents would react.
    • 5-2   Lord... At least the week started off well...I think. I don't know where to start.   Oh, yes, I do. It was mostly background noise to me. There was nothing to the majority of the characters that were on. Meaning, it was mostly characters that I didn't care for or I've gotten accustomed to just FF-ing through. Or just zoning out. Even the possibility that Michael and Lauren might have a story was just meh simply because we have done this dance before and Lauren was coming across like Michael was working for Sonny on GH the mob.   The biggest thing I really took away from last week was that the new costumer designer has stepped up her game again. It didn't bother me at all, but I wish there was some drama with this fashion. I liked Claire's outfit, LOVE Nikki's. And I continue to like brighter colors on Nick though I hated those pants. And I could go on about the clothes misses like Billy in that short sleeeve, but I digress.   The only things that held my interest...   THE SICKENING OF COLE. As soon as he started to cough, I went uh oh. I'm happy to see he might be getting a story. And I guess it shows how much history I have with the character that I care. But still...ugh.   ALL THINGS AUDRA. I admit that I was taken aback to see Victor with her at Crimson Lights. When was the last time he was there? I want to say recently with Kyle/Claire, but otherwise I still found the scene taking me aback. But I like her being soft with Kyle who actually came across annoyingly flirty for someone that hates Audra. I actually can't wait for him to eat crow. And since Audra is now being used to drive a wedge between Kyle and Claire, I have to talk about...   SUMMER'S EXIT. Mmmm...mixed feelings. It don't seem half as bad as others appear to see it. Yes, if I didn't have the context, it still seem odd that her part in the Kyle/Claire drama was barely touched on. And she interacted with everyone I felt she should interact with. But in the overall context...I still didn't mind the exit. Though it was abrupt.    I did like hearing that Noah and Allie are still together. And don't get me started on the offscreen Mariah drama.
    • I'm sure old Reva/Josh fans saw the writing on the wall--and this was their pattern. They (or usually Josh) was so angry that they'd spend months yelling at each other, and then "boom", they were macking up on each other, regardless of who else they were entangled with. (This is the couple who slept together under HB's roof while Reva was married to him, after all.) "Always". *gag me*
    • I don't think we've seen the last of Erica Kane. That's something I will continue believing in.
    • You are the best!!!! That is a remarkable talent, to not just summarize, but contextualize Draper's dilemma!  It is delightful to be able to think of that situation in a new way. - Thank you

I was pondering Lee Godart's accent, because it was so dreamy.  It made me think he would've been perfectly cast as Victor Newman's brother on Y&R.  American's have a hard time distinguishing European accents.  And, good news, before I hit reply, I went and confirmed the actor is still alive.
    • Has anyone even told Gio that Sonny once shot Dante?
    • There are so many missed opportunities and story beats that could be played out on B&B. Hope was finally able to successfully move on from Liam, with Thomas, and what does Brad Bell do, he ruins it. Hope & Thomas, baggage and all, were really good together. Why Thomas is off the canvas is mind boggling, yet we have a terrible and completely useless character in Daphne still there, please make it make sense. I think Rick is needed on the show too. Have him come back and hook up with Taylor again. That would create some really good drama and cause Ridge & Brooke's heads to explode.  And for God's sake just recast RJ and bring Jack to the show as an adult to rip Brooke a new one for basically ignoring him all these years. But yeah, just my opinion
