SOAP OPERA MYSTERY HOUR: This week’s blind items

• Which Emmy pre-nominated actor, who failed to earn a final nod, refused to walk the red carpet and talk to any of the press inside at an “industry” party? And he wonders why no one voted for him. Too bad he had to take a second job to make ends meet.

• Which soap opera is thinking of killing off its most popular heroine?

• Which actress is furious she wasn’t nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award — and isn’t letting anyone forget about it?

1) ???

2) AMC - Erica Kane?

3) GL - Kim Zimmer?

Victoria Rowell (ex-Dru) was as shocked as everyone when Y&R was shunned by the Emmys in the best writing, show and directing categories. But she was thrilled her friend Debbi Morgan (Angie, AMC) was nominated as Lead Actress. Rowell says, “In a time when the world is correcting itself [racially], I hope the ‘Snub Club’ at Y&R realizes what it feels like to be snubbed by your peers. Some of us can’t even get on the pre-Emmy ballot. Maybe Y&R knows what it feels like now. Thank God Debbie Morgan will be representing the shrinking and invisible casts of African American actors in daytime dramas.”

Suck it, Maria! lol

Sounds like Engen had a lot of personal issues and his religious beliefs came into conflict with what he had to do. He shouldn't have joined a soap in the first place then.

If every actor with issues of one kind or another stopped being an actor or refused to do soaps there would be no actors and no soaps. I don't understand this assumption that all actors must be willing to do anything and everything at a moment's notice, even if it's completely different than what they signed up for, no questions asked. I don't buy that. Everyone has boundaries. Everyone. And when you're in an extremely emotional state, your boundaries automatically tighten up and restrict your comfort zone even further. This has gotten blown so insanely out of proportion by Branco, DC, and Perez.

It seems like this guy's been slowly cracking for awhile now and whatever the source of stress, it finally got to be too much for him and he kinda snapped. It happens. And if this episode was caused by some kind of emotional problem or breakdown, then it's nowhere near as unprofessional as say two ego-maniacs fist-fighting on the set IMO.

If TPTB knew that he was having serious issues with what he was being asked to play lately and then sprung the kiss on him without warning, frankly I think they're at least 50% at fault. Did he ruin his career permanently? I don't know, I hope not. If he can sort through whatever he's going through he should be given another shot.

If part of the problem is quitting because of what he views as an immoral act, then the soap genre doesn't seem to be the right genre for an actor with those kinds of beliefs. How many rapists, murders, stalkers, and other villain-types have been portrayed in this genre? Engen's character was a gray character from the beginning, yet now it's time to complain and quit? I hope he sorts out his problems, but every actor has problems with their storylines, that doesn't mean they quit over it.

i love VR, i really do and i SO want her back on Y&R, hence I wish she would just STFU. i think it's almost safe to say that she'll never be back.

She's entirely full of herself, and while she has some valid arguments, you can tell not having an Emmy haunts her ass. I mean, those awards are a joke anyway, and why is she STILL hung up over it? Get over it already. We know it's not a fair system, and you don't have one at home, but sheesh. It's hard to take her seriously sometimes.

Seriously. Beverlee f-u-c-k-i-n-g Mckinsey never won an award. It took Michael Zaslow about 20 years worth of wonderful material to finally get one. GL was snubbed for a Drama Series Emmy when it was at its very best. Ditto for a bunch of other actors and actresses. And as much as I like VR and Dru, she is no Bev.

Before anyone thinks of bringing the Engen drama up in here thinking that it is him, think again. There were NO west coast actors at the "industry" party.

In addition, Zimmer was gracious about not being nominated. She had her time according to her! She wasn't thrilled that GL failed to get any major nods, however, in its final year on CBS.

Could it be Y&R's Lily? Nelson said they were wanting to bring back SM's Malcom for a sad event this summer/fall.

I never thought of that. I automatically thought of MTS' Nikki on Y&R or Erika Slezak's Viki on OLTL.

    • The Rauch version seemed abruptly truncated in comparison to the full one—like the video and audio weren't actually edited at all for that, they just deleted a whole portion—but with a little money put in upfront to it could have worked.  So many memorable scenes in the early '90s had included that theme as background and/or picked up the next day and segued into that opening...even the brief hint of that music evokes memories for me.  Not to mention, they would have saved money in the long run without having to update cast photos or keep paying for new openings. I doubt you could prove a connection with ratings, but I actually think it's interesting that Y&R has remained the highest rated for so long and DAYS is (was?) one of the last soaps, while both stuck with their original theme songs.  And each theme became part of broader pop culture in some unexpected ways over the years: Mary J Blige, Close Encounters, etc.  Who's to say that kind of free publicity didn't help keep those shows on casual viewers' minds at some point?  But it's also a case of the chicken and the egg - a mainstream entertainment project would probably not give that kind of shout-out to a soap or its theme music if both weren't so familiar to people.
    • Yes to all of this. I mean I wouldn’t have mind seeing Nate find success and media attention with his Ask MD website or whatever but the switch to a media executive was the worst.
    • Honestly, as long as they don't do the shaky cam stuff, I've been thinking it's bad enough now to lean into the Peapack model. Film at a real courthouse on the weekend instead of making a set, a real park instead of Chancellor park....
    • Jon Michael Reed in an Afternoon TV review of GL criticized the 75-81 theme as looking and sounding like a Tampax commercial.
    • RHOM What a chaotic but absolutely great show. Miami just gets better with every episode.  I've always loved Las Cubanas, but they have gotten very mean-girl-clique. Alexia has always been such a great RH, but last season's success has gone to her head. She is disdainful of Adriana (who, though hard to like by some, was 100% in the right( and lowkey threatened by Nicole. Larsa is, too. I can't believe Larsa is swanning around, photographing her feet in lucite heels, thinking that qualifies as work and that this makes her superior to a full-time anesthesiologist. Bringing in the lawyers could have been so contrived (which it was), but it was so breezy and the lawyers were in on the joke of it all.  I can't believe I once found Lenny hot. Those were gaslighting, threatening words the Peacock mics picked up. No wonder those sweet kids are acting out. They are confused and probably feel lowkey abandoned by their father for this new hoe.
