I never liked or "got" Theresa. There's a difference between a teenage vixen we root for and a psycho. Theresa was psycho from the jump. Reilly never understood that, which is why he often took Sami Brady too far as well in later years. I didn't know Lindsay could act until AMC.

I always liked Liza Huber. I wish she'd do more acting. Travis Schuldt was absolutely horrendous. So was most of the cast, really - Metcalfe, Dana Sparks, James Hyde, Rodney Van Johnson, you name it.

Passions was my first soap and is what opened me up to the genre. I never liked Liza Huber as Gwen, I thought Natalie Zea was much better. I also preferred the first Rebecca to Andrea Evans who was too campy for me which is saying something given the show we're talking about. I also liked the brief Theresa recast when Lindsay was out for some reason, because she didn't try to play Theresa as sympathetic, she just embraced the bitch.

Beth was my all time favorite Passions character.

Passions should have got Maureen McCormick to stay at Passions. I like AE but she was too OTT. Travis was bad but so was Eric/ I didnt like any of the miguels and Blair Redford had what the last 6 months.

The original kay and Deanna Wright were best in the role and Jade Harlow was the best Jessica

Travis was really bad as Ethan, but the writing hardly helped. I did think Eric's performance was an improvement though because I think he really "got" the campiness of the show. As an actor on such an over-the-top crazy ass show, you just really needed to embrace the kookiness to shine.

The PSNS nerd in me had to let you guys know surprisingly the second day came fast in episode 5 (that Friday during premiere week) half way through the episode. It's sad how many times I've rewatched this show to know that lol, but it stands out to me because it was the first time I had seen the day change midway through an episode on a soap and the words "the next morning in Harmony" appear. Granted we all know how slow the days will go in the future lol

Popping in to share a few observations, so please forgive the multiple quotes.

Ships in the night. I started watching on the third week, which stands out because I remember thinking it would be fun to follow a soap right from the beginning.

You and I might be roughly the same age (I was 10 going on 11 that summer). A lot of the leading ladies were stellar -- I'd also include Kathleen Noone in that list -- but in retrospect, it's a case of "for this?"

As for the second point -- indeed! Between Days and Passions, 1999-2005 had quite the bumper crop of guys who helped me realize it wasn't a phase.

Tabitha's constant quest to kill Charity was a pretty good hook, I must say. On the other hand, I'm not surprised the show eventually switched gears with Tabitha, since Juliet (and Josh Ryan Evans prior to his death) was sort of the show's mascot.

"It's fate, Whitney! It really is!" Uh, no, bitch. I always thought Hartley was beautiful and charismatic, but she got stuck with such an off-putting character.

Don't forget Galen. Luis' rage-boners about the Cranes were always good for an unintentional laugh.

I'm just speculating here, but I suspect Maureen was replaced because Andrea Evans would be more distinct opposite Kim Johnston Ulrich. Why have two blondes when you can have a blonde and a reddish blonde? Still, it is fun to imagine how Maureen would have handled Rebecca and Julian's wackier moments. Then again, maybe the show would have gone a different direction with those two.

It really didn't. Off the top of my head, it took a year for Theresa to break up Ethan and Gwen the first time and two years for Ethan's paternity to be revealed.

I've always felt that the pace of Passions was part of Reilly's meta-commentary on soaps.  Passions was an intentional parody of the genre and the whole idea of days lasting for weeks seemed like it part of the scheme.  However, I can see why it would make it impossible to binge watch.  I remember a winter night in Tabatha's house that lasted so long it was spring when they woke up the next day.

I am a bit older, but I remember thinking the same thing when "Texas" premiered.

I'm glad you touched upon the parody aspect, because I want to throw it out to the other readers. Did Passions work as a parody? I say yes in the sense that it frequently had humor, but no in the sense that it didn't have something to balance it against. There's gotta be something, like a distinct sense of style (Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman), excellent acting and genuine emotion (Soap at its best) or an apparent affection for the material (Carol Burnett's As the Stomach Turns sketches, Acorn Antiques).

I feel like the show didn't start of as a parody of soaps but as a supernatural soap that JER loved to write. But as the years went on, especially at the end, I feel he went all out parody. Remember Juanita who blamed Pilar for her whole family getting mowed down the cops? She was totally off the charts camp/telenovela. It was fun to watch but no way could you take it serious.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zQMfUf7dE8

Agree.  When it became clear no one was taking the show seriously, that's when everyone started touting PASSIONS as a parody of soaps rather than as a soap itself.  Unfortunately...

No.  It didn't work as a parody, or as anything else.  The writing wasn't good enough, and the acting wasn't good enough either.  PASSIONS was just a bad, bad show.

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
