Texas!

It's a shame that it never occurred to P&G to build TEXAS around Beverly Penberthy and Pat Matthews, rather than around Beverlee McKinsey and Iris (who, IMO, was more effective on AW).  For one thing, they wouldn't have needed to alter Pat's personality the way they did Iris' in order to make her the new show's central heroine.

I swear I had read at one point that Pat was supposed to be part of Texas. It makes sense since they were playing with a Kevin/Pat pairing. A Daytime TV issue in early 1980 stated that Russ Matthews was slated to be part of the new soap, which was then titled Another World: Houston. Also, Texas was originally supposed to premiere on June 30, but then was postponed until August 4. Makes me wonder if the postponement was meant to weave Iris into the story.

June 30 ended up being the day that the Texas storylines began on Another World. If it was postponed for no other reason just to bring Iris into it, that sounds like a pretty bad move. I know Beverlee McKinsey had great star power but it does seem kind of risky to place it all on her shoulders.

It looks alot like the orginal BevAlex Spaulding entrance living room..as it was blue but it probably different...( I know furniture from Bob Hughes living room would magically appear in Alan Spauldings office so...)

Now can someone tell me where my key's are..I have too much useless memories in there.

Are you talking about Ashely?  She wasn't an ingenue at all.  The character really didn't fit any of the traditional soap opera archetypes.  But she certainly wasn't an ingenue.  She was too old, she wasn't innocent enough, her personality was too strong, etc, etc, etc,  Wasn't she more like a reformed bad-girl?  Almost like a more tolerable version of Reve Shane.

Ashley seemed more like Vanessa to me than Reva from what I saw of Pamela's portrayal of the character. From being a wealthy heiress to having a baby in her teens and her being torn by her "cowboy" Justin and TJ (her child's father) Like Vanessa being in love with her southern cowboy Billy and her eldest child's father Ross.

Ashley was a reformed bad girl. When she was introduced, Terry Dekker made some biting remarks about Ashley's scheming nature and said she couldn't be trusted. She was a secretary at World Oil known for sleeping with the married executives. The character changed a lot as the writers changed. I don't recall her being a wealthy heiress when she was introduced; she was a secretary whose wealthy aunt Hildy was good friends with Iris.

    • I wonder if Falcon Crest wasn't seen as macho enough for them.  I first saw Dynasty on FX around 1994 or 1995. I think it ran for a few years, although I may be off as I moved and lost the channel for a while.
    • -- The fact that we know the mess that Billy made when he renovated the Chancellor place makes his entire sadsack attitude pathetic. I wanted someone to smack the hell out of him. -- And why did Diane care so much about Billy's opinion beyond hearing he liked it better before? Why continue pressing him on it? Josh Griffith clearly thinks this is a storyline, and it isn't. It never was. -- So Mariah cheated on Tessa offscreen. OF COURSE it was offscreen. Then we got this ridiculous, convoluted explanation of why she cheated, ending in her announcement that she doesn't have any character at all. GMAFB.  -- Now we'll get the cliche garbage of Mariah confessing to Tessa, who turns to Daniel for sex even though she's a lesbian. (Please spare me the comment that Tessa is bi.) -- The excuse for Summer leaving town? Also pathetic. Why in the hell would she have to leave town to find a new creative director for Marchetti?
    • I vaguely recall it surfaced on either TNT or TBS around 1993 or so but I could be wrong about the channel. By 1997 when this article was written Knots was still airing on TNT, Dallas was on the old TNN network (which today is Paramount), and Dynasty was on…well I don’t even recall now but feel like it was either E!  or Bravo. TNN ran Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas together in the evenings for years surprised they didn’t just pick up FC to resurrect the trifecta.
    • I think you're thinking of the dress she wore on April 15 from her Ebony cover shoot when Andre had to put her in bed.
    • @Maximthank you for such a thoughtful reply. I have printed it out so I have it with me as I watch most of the soap clips on the YT app on my TV. I've always wanted to get into Edge of Night, but I didn't no where to start.
    • Laugh-In was also before my time, but I loved watching her when Nick at Nite and TV Land ran repeats. She was also on Sesame Street for years. So vibrant. One of those people I've never heard bad word of. Sorry to hear that.
    • Amazing resource. Thank you! I'm pretty confident that she's worn it before. I'll look into it. That or I'm having some serious deja vu.
    • Other than Soapnet I am trying to remember if I ever even saw it in syndication. I know I saw Dallas, Knots and Dynasty in syndication before Soapnet.
