I rarely agree (ok almost never -- well actually this is a first) with Nelson, but I admit he's not too far off the mark this time, although I smirk ^_^ (smirk I tell ya!) at his refusal to recognize Gigi and Tess's roles in the destruction of OLTL. And his continuing adoration of FF, who although I like her and think she's a capable actress, has pitched a tent as far as the campy mess that is OLTL right now.

The Nelson Ratings: September 8, 2008

BY Nelson Branco

This week’s reviews, top-rated actors, and next week’s viewing cheat-sheet!

AWARDS CENTRAL: Mid-year handicapping!

2009 Daytime Emmy Awards Countdown — Younger actress

Last year, this category was a joke. If history repeats itself, then most of the press will write this whole race off in the future. Example? Don’t be too surprised if Bryton (Devon, The Young and the Restless) shows up in this category.

Alexa Gerasimovich (Kathy, All My Children)

Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy, The Bold and the Beautiful)

Kirsten Storms (Maxie, General Hospital)

Julie Marie Berman (Lulu, GH)

Farah Fath (Gigi/Emma, One Life to Live)

Kristen Alderson (Starr, OLTL)

Brittany Underwood (Langston, OLTL)

Wild Cards: Anyone who isn’t talented. And you know who they are.

REMOTE CONTROL

Summarizing the good, the bad and the ugly on soaps this past week!

Remote Control will return next week after I finish covering The 33rd Annual Toronto International Film Festival (let me add, it’s been a nice break from soap viewing — there are no rapists and rape victims falling in love because of a convenient case of “amnesia”, that’s for sure). If you’re a film buff, click on to tiffinsider.ca for all the dish and scoop from the world’s second-best movie festival.

Wow. The tide is turning very fast on Ron. :( He was a savior a few months back....

One thing that I don't understand - what's up with his fascination of Reva being pregnant? Or Bradley Cole on his list for actors to watch???:wacko: On those two points, IMO, he's way off track.

Ron Carlivati was basically getting praise for not being Dena Higley, and was able to ride that wave until the strike. Much like B&E got praise for not being McTavish when CRASH happened on AMC -- but with them, their wave was more like a ripple and the praise died out by September.

A few months ago, Nelson was ready to drink Ron's bath water and now he's doing enough trash talk to put Sarah Palin to shame.

That's is my problem with Nelson he so full of hyperbole and extremes it leaves him with no credibility. Goodness knows I have no good feelings towards RC but Nelson sounds less like a journalist and more like a jilted (wannabe) lover.

Nelson has never been objective. Even I, a huge RC supporter, thought his "RC saves" attitude early on was way too much and way too overbearing. I allowed room for error. But Nelson is always hyperbolic and histrionic; he's easily the worst soap journalist I've seen aside from Hinsey. I think while some of his attacks on the current state of the show have some merit given viewer discontent, it's not nearly as bad as he'd like to claim. I think he's still fueled by his "snub" over the anniversary celebration and he's channeling that into his latest revenge screed. "How dare they not invite me? I'm Nelson Branco!" It's more about him and less about how he feels about OLTL. That's always been his problem as a so-called journalist; he makes the strife at CBS all about him too.

And no, for the eightieth time, RC did not only get props for not being Dena Higley.

They didn't invite him to that 40th anniversary and he's butt hurt about it....It doesn't make what he's saying less true, just more inclined to be honest. He was kissing butt because he wanted to be the new in source to ABC and all they've been feeding him are interviews with Michael Easton.

OK, Ron's not working out because it seems like he doesn't know how to DEVELOP story. He just knows how to tie them up and ship them out. Someone help him out, please? Because his ability to climax and resolve issues are amazing. But his exposition needs an ishload of work.

The executions were a hell of a lot more satisfying, though. Throughout May sweeps, every second of OLTL was like, "What the hell is gonna happen next?" I suppose another the reason why he's been lost in a labyrinth of bad storylines this summer is because he used up all the good ones during May sweeps.

Now, we're stuck with all these stories in their inception with nothing exciting happening for at least another month. What happened to people figuring out good pacing and editing? I mean, yeah, they've all been pretty much bad (with the slight exception of Todd and Marty and Dorian and Clint because they seem to have a morsel of potential), but why not spread out bad stories so they all don't end and start up at the same time?

    • I recall @Chris B asking about this but here is an interview Sheri Anderson did with SOU back in the fall of ‘89: Here is an article that I think is interesting, it is an interview with Shery Anderson, screenwriter of the ninth season THE WRITE STUFF: FALCON CREST’S SHERI ANDERSON: FROM DAYS TO NIGHTTIME By Richard Spencer Soap Opera Update, 1989 : At a time when the success of nighttime soaps is shaky, Sheri Anderson, former headwriter for DAYS OF OUR UVES, ANOTHER WORLD, GUIDING LIGHT and GENERAL HOSPITAL, makes the jump to the evening format with some new ideas to help strenthen the CBS California vineyard based soap opera FALCON CREST. "FALCON CREST is going to have a differnet tone that it never had before," headwriter Sheri Anderson expiains. "The people that I am working with are kind of an interesting mix. The executive producer, Joel Sumow, did the first years of MIAMI VICE and THE EQUALIZER, Bob Cochran, a Harvard MBA,and Cyrus Nowrasteh, who has done a number of features, are story editors. I am co-porducer, with a history in daytime, so we are a real different mix. We all kind of balance each other out in different ways. I am sort of the emotional side (coming from daytime) and they are more the gritty side." A lack of focus is what Sheri attributes to FALCON CREST's problems the last few seasons. "No one , seemed to knwo that the characters' motivations were. Pilar was a real good example. No one seemed to know what she wanted. This season it is clear that Pilar wants Lance. That is really her dream and goal tokeep Lance. She will do anything to do that. She will be making some sacrifices thís season that really jeopardize her relationship with Lance." While Pilar's character may be strongly in place, Maggie's is not. How will the show restructure in light of Maggie's drowning? " We are not trying to replace her, but we are adding another kind of strong heroine character. That character is Laruren Daniels. She's very earthy; married to a construction worker. Lauren. is the sister of Michael Sharp, Gregory Harrison's new character. "Michael is an extremely powerful adversary to Richard Channing. He will be more cynical than Richard and less emotionally motivated. For Michael it is all power and money. The audience will be more sympathetic toward Richard. He will be going through hell," Sheri reveáis with doom in her voice, "...Paying for his past sins " The complete opposite of Richard or Michael's intensity is the the new character of Charlíe St. James."Charlie is every woman's foolish choice," Sheri character sketches. "He's kind of indescribable; charismatic, totally unpredictable, charming, unnervtng. He's coming in as a love interest for Emma. He will be the first man to make Emma feel like a woman. She's really not victimized by him...she’s addicted to him. Charlie's presence will make her a little less flakey this season." But Emma is not the only one in store for major personality changes, also in the categroy is Frank. "We arebringing back somebody from his past," Sheri reveals "there will be a great secret that will come to ight." Speaking of characters from the past, are there any Sheri would like to return? "Everyone is fond of Ana-Alicia in her original role. At this point we don't have any plans to bring her back because we have some other character that are going to take the forefront." And if one thing is going to remain the same, it will be what Sheri recognizes as the theme of FALCON CREST "Quest for control of Falcon Crest. We have people trying to take control, and they are all taking it for different reasons. Some are emotioanl, some are revenge, but they each have a different eason for which they want Falcon Crest. And that is really the pivotal center. It is very earthy." Keeping the core of lite show intact is not the only thing nighttime shows have to do to stay interesting and acording to Sheri"I din't think night time shows have kept paces with changes in the viewing audience," Sheri answers by analyzing what exactly is primetime soaps* problem. ln datyime, you do over the years the shows stay on, but you are adapting to what people are accepting:faster-paced, or slower, or addíng more comedy, depending on the audience, and what they are buying. I don't think some of these shows in primetime have done that "We are trying to make the show as much episodio as it is continuing. We are cutting down the number of scenes in each act to get the audience more involved. But some of the shows, and this happens in daytime al so, don’t let the characters really grow," Sheri certainly made chracters develop during her daytime career, but especially on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, which is the source for her favourite stories of her careen ”When Víctor carne to Salem and revealed tha the was really Bo’s father, it caused such a ripple effect for Kim, Shane, Román, Bo, Hope, Caroline and Sean. I also liked bringing Kayla back for Patch.” Having written for Kristian Alfonso' s Hope (DAYS) and now Pilar on FC, Sheri distínguishes between the two characters. "Pilar is a woman, but Hope was growing up. Hope was more innocent and Pilar is not Pilar has an intelligent strength where Hope did all the wrong things for all the right reasons." Pilar wíll be the only one retuming from her family, while Angela Channing’s appearances will be limited (per Jane Wyman's contract). "But Richard will be taking a very strong role which is very similar to Angela Angelad presence will be felt in every epísode/ Sheri informs. A lot of people complained about the women of FALCON CREST being wishy-washy They certainly aren't this season Sheri emphasizes. "Lauren will be strong, especially after her brother Michael steais Richard’s children and places them with her, Frnak’s step daughter will be very devious, indicateive of Kathleen Turner in “Body Heat” And Gregory Harrison is fabulous," Sheri reports with joy. "He is so different from his character on TRAPPER JOHN, M.D He is very similar to Michael Douglas in the film 'Wall Street'. FALCON CREST viewers will find a much richer textrae, getting away from the glamour and really going to substance and style." Sheri concludes, "it will be a show to watch, We are trying to bring in a new audience, and at the same time, respect our past audience."
    • Well, if he's had a series of mini-strokes along the way (which, IIRC, he did), then that influences things. I can say, from my experience of having had two full-blown strokes, that recovery periods were very, very different, both in terms of difficulty and length of time.
    • Whhhhhhhhhhhattttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was everybody out this weekend.
    • She did have a thing with him in the late '90s, before she inexplicably disappeared with no mention as to why, although I can't remember if they had sex.
    • I don't believe she did. She did sleep with Simon, believing he was a Spaulding.
    • -- If I ever get sick, please don't send me to Garland Memorial. That hospital is a YIKES. -- Soooo much activity around the main nurses' desk. Do they move dead people on a gurney past that desk, too? -- 8 months for Bill to recover from a "small stroke"? Uh....I don't think so. Is anyone researching this stuff? The hospital stuff is not coming off as realistic. -- It's good that Derek and Ashley are being integrated into other stories, but it's a real stretch to say Leslie was "stalking" Ashley. It makes Derek seem dumber than we already think he is. -- Ashley spends a lot of time having small talk while she's at work. -- Chelsea is embarrassing. Period. -- Tomas is supposed to pick up the slack for Bill, but he has time to have worthless conversations with Leslie? OK then. -- Kat is destroying the case against Leslie, but that's clearly the way to keep Leslie on the canvas.
    • 6-3   I almost let my system just delete the episode just like with B&B. I am now questioning if I should have. lol.   I just can't believe that Cole sat there and started to get sick and then only Victoria off and ran off and everyone basically went back to what they were doing at Nikki's birthday party. Cole was too much of a vet character for that. And now story back off-screen.   I did chuckle at how much Victor pay Kyle dust. And now Kyle with this deal and a promise to leave town if he hurts Claire. smh. As if Victor isn't going to make that happen.   It was lovely to see Ashley. And actually (misdressed and all) Abby.    And I liked Claire's dress.
    • Oh. That. I pretend that never happened.

I did think of another possibility. Did India ever sleep with Alan? They kind of toyed with pairing them up, but I'm not sure they ever became lovers.
    • While I do love the chaotic energy that is Kat vs Lesile, it is a bit extra. Sheltered, virginal Kat who plays it safe from her man to her wardrobe understands that Leslie is dangerous, but she's out here showing up everywhere and anywhere that Lesile is to be found and actively going to places where she is alone? I mean Kat doesn't even act a little afraid or intimidated by Leslie. Meanwhile, big Ole Derek out here begging for his and Ashley's life to Jacob.  As for Dani, I didn't see it that way. Dani and Bill were together for 30 years and shared a family. I believe there was real love there at one point. Bill is still an ass and Dani is still crazy, but realizing she may lose him and her daughter's may lose their dad definitely struck a chord.
