PASSIONS: 2006 In Review

2006, to me, has been an entertaining year. Major plot points were resolved, new stories were revealed, characters returned, left, and were introduced.

The highlight of the year: Vendetta.

EVERYTHING worked for me here. Whitney, the crazy, self-flaggelating, wannabe nun made sense. She committed incest and produced a child from it. And with her religious upbringing, of course she's going to be upset and off the wall. That made her susceptible to evil, in the form of Alistair the monk.

Bringing back BETH was awesome. This was the perfect time to do it...she hadn't been gone too long, but had been gone long enough. Her going crazy because of Fancy and Luis was awesome, and she managed to prove herself as Daddy's Little Girl. Unfortunately, her stint wasn't long enough. Hopefully Beth will be back soon.

The chalice thing used cool DaVinci Code-like elements, and also connected the show back to its supernatural roots, but on a world-rocking scale. Ok, so Alistair as the monk was kind of predictable, but that didn't stop me from enjoying it. It made total sense for him to go after this amazing power to try to rule the world.

Also, two major secrets came to light: Little Ethan is Ethan's son, and Chad and Whitney aren't brother and sister! Yay for plot developments!! Hell, even Maya died and stayed dead, and the mystery of Noah's missing years was resolved when the Dragon Lady fried.

Fun characters like Edna, Norma, Esme and JT were used, but not toooo much to the point where we tired of them.

Yeah, the vets were backburnered, but they came back with a vengeance, with TC having his stroke, Eve and Julian breaking up, and Ivy's schemes being exposed and Sam dumping her. Did anyone want to spend the spring and summer watching that poisonous biotch love up Sam? Nope, didn't think so!

The Fox/Kay/Miguel triangle was good during Siren's run. But Miguel's feelings for Kay are totally contrived. I hate him so much. That aspect of the story loses points for me. And bringing back Charity has gone back to the supernatural roots and sweet lovin' Charguel goodness. :)

Tabitha and Endora are cute no matter what. I love the stuff with Julian and hope it goes somewhere. I also love the Crane curse being revisited. Passions hasn't shied away from the supernatural like it has in the past, which is nice.

In the fall, Passions has continued to be exciting with more secrets coming to light (the Ivy thing), and the build-up of more secrets, like Chad's secret lover, the tabloid, and Little Ethan's paternity.

I don't really care about Sheridan and Luis, or Luis and Fancy, although I'd ultimately like to see Shuis and Fancy/Noah wind up together. But Dark Sheridan is a really neat twist. I love it.

Also, dead weight was gotten rid of, such as Rachel, Liz, and Martin. I loved the temp Sheridan and Chris.

As for my favourite couple, Theresa and Ethan, it's been great to have her in a position of power, and to see Ethan jealous because of Jared. I honestly believe Gwen is going down and ET will reunite, but it will be short-lived unless Theresa owns up about Little Ethan first.

And the best move of all was bringing back Grace, one of my favourite characters. Enough said!

Now, could someone please tell me why reading about the show is much more entertaining than actually watching the show? Rion, your 2006 summary was great! I'd much rather read what you have to say about the show than actually watch it. I think it's the downgrade acting or slow stories that get to me. When looking back and only having to spend 3 minutes rather than a whole year of watching, Passions really isn't that bad...

I bet if we edited Passions into a two-hour movie, everyone would love it!! :D

There's no doubt it my mind. If NBC did a special week catch up from 1999-present, the show wouldn't be bad at all to watch. It may even gain some fanbase.

The reason Rion's summary sounds better is because everything concerning PASSIONS sounds better on paper. It's the follow through and execution (or lack thereof as the case may be) that particularly suck.

Exactly. That and character destruction.

The summer on Passions was the highlight. Otherwise, the rest of the year with a few exceptions was crap and it was probably the worst year the show has ever had.

See guys, I think you could agree that I'd be a good writer for Passions. I'd write in JER's style, but I'd make things plausible and faster-paced. :)

Well why don't you start the very first Passions blog?

The entire show?! It wouldn't take much. Just edit all the repetitive dialogue and lame-ass BEACH/SB ripoffs on pop culture and you would have a two hour movie.

LMAO bellcurve!!

But ... good recap Rion. On paper, Passions isn't all that bad. It really is the execution (the SLOOOOOOOOOOW pacing, the less than stellar acting and the character destruction).

Even when Passions is at its worst, it still cheers me up out of my miserable, boyfriend-lacking, self-destructive, self-hating ways. :)

For me, the only good part about this year was Vendetta (and RED which I think went through January). I wish they had kept Beth!!

Even if you were to edit the highlights of Passions from the last year down to two hours, you'd still find it slow paced with repetitive dialogue.

I have a Passions blog up now---it's called Rion's Passions Blog! The first three weeks of stories are up!
