ALL: Songs Used On Soaps For Bad Reasons?

Featured Replies

The topic about couples' songs got me to remembering cases where certain songs were used on soaps for a bad reason or event.

For instance, probably the most infamous was Herb Alpert's "Rise" when Luke raped Laura.

On AMC, Brooke was once stalked to the tune of "Every Breath You Take."

On AW, serial killer Fax Newman had a habit of, I believe, whistling "The Muffin Man."

And I've heard "I Will Remember You" for several deaths/funerals. I particularly remember Gabe's on AW.

Any more?

There was that very gothic theme when Kevin got his ass beat up in jail on Y&R.

A song that will forever be etched in my mind "In This Life" from the final episode of AW. It was Bette Midler's version used in the episode, but the song was also recorded by a country singer (who, I have no idea). I was at work (different place than now) a couple of years back and they'd always have the radio on in the kitchen. Well, the country version of "Life" came on and I just froze and started getting all tear. I was having a flashback to the end of the world! I honestly can't hear that song and not tear up.

Another classic marriage of song to storyline is "Enough is Enough" from 'Guiding Light' when Roger chased Rita through the hall of mirrors. That was over 25 years ago and people *still* talk about it as being one of the best moments in soap history.

The country artist is Collin Raye.

That Sarah McLaughlin song "In the Arms of the Angel" was a staple "sad occassion" song for years. I remember they used it when Camille found out she had breast cancer on ATWT.

"You Raise Me Up" got played for Jake's funeral.

Yes, Brainwashed!John and HoGina had nasty, which is why it leaves me with horrid memories. Seeing rape treated as something that was supposed to be 'hot' (which it wasen't because they had no chemistry - I belive KA used the word "awkward").

On OLTL, at Megan's request, one of the characters sang "Dancin' In the Street" at her funeral...I think Viki was in shock, lol.

Maeve on Ryan's Hope always sang "Danny Boy" for St. Patrick's Day but she also sang it after her daughter, Mary's, funeral. It became an even more powerful scene because it finally caused Jack's uber-self-control to shatter and he sobbed in Maeve's arms.

GH used "Think of Laura" a number of times after Laura's presumed death.

They used it for Brenda on GH. I thought the way GH used it was very powerful. It played while they showed a Brenda montage and how the whole town shutdown for her memorial service. It was probably the one case in soap history where actually seeing the memorial service wasn'tnecessary. The montage, the song, and the whole town being shown totally shutdown spoke volumes.

AMC used that for Hayley and Mateo when they were going through a rough patch.

Guiding Light used "Good-bye My Friend" to play over the end credits when Maureen Reardon died. The EP of GL at the time had a knack for doing stuff like that.

Juice Newton's "Queen of Hearts" when Beth was getting her revenge on Alan and Gus.

They used some song written for the show for when Hart told Cassie, Dinah was pregnant with his child.

The song used for Phillip's Memorial Service. Very spine chilling montage all together.

When Reva took Richard off life support she sat in his room and sang a song as she watched him slowly die. I remember thinking that it was very sad that she hadn't left his side even after he had died.

This song wasn't used in sort of a bad way, because Phillip and Harley had finally ended their bickering, but still, GL used "Time After Time" after Zach had been hit by a car. The montage also showcased a lonely Cassie walking through the park juxtaposed with Danny contemplating whether he should take off his wedding ring, and Alan plotting to trap Olivia in their marriage by getting her pregnant. The show was excellently written by Millee Taggart at the time.

GL used a U2 song when Blake and Ross did the nasty during the blackout. Since Ross was dating Blake's mom Holly at the time, I guess you could consider it bad, LOL.

Also on GL, Reva mentioned the song "Paper Roses" by Marie Osmond when she confronted the man who had danced with her to that song and tried to molest her.

On ATWT, Douglas Cummings stalked Kim to her singing "Someone to Watch Over Me."

Loving used "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider" for the serial killer storyline.
