ABC/NBC: Hypocrisy concerning criticism of Frons

We know you hate all things NBC since they canceled AW, but please move on. It's not that serious.

Isn't it? I gotta respectfully disagree. NBC has always had a horrible history of ditching all of its really good shows (and as an avid fan of shows like Generations, Santa Barbara, Texas, Search when it was on NBC, I've seen it firsthand), but to many axing AW was the final straw. So was the treatment NBC gave to the two shows that weren't named Days when they were developing Passions (We're going to cancel one or the other.... bye bye, AW... oh wait, let's just get rid of Sunset Beach too).

There are a lot of people still pissed at NBC for that treatment, and they won't turn on any soap on that network for that reason. I still watch Days because I have for nearly 25 years, but my soap viewing consists of ATWT and GL after that. I get the feeling CBS respects its audience, from gray-hairs on down to kids. I can't say the same about either of the other networks.

We have to look at all the sources, Max.

AW was mishandled not olny by NBC, but PGP as well. No one at PGP stopped Frankie from being murdered, or stopped NBC from hiring that hack Charlotte Savitz(who I believe was an NBC staffer prior to her reign of terror on AW).

I miss AW, but I do feel it was a smart business decision to cancel AW in favor of PASSIONS. PASSIONS tapes on the West Coast(=cheaper) AND they had the buzz from an Emmy Winning Head-Writer who literally SAVED NBC. Jimmy Reilly was NBC Daytime's savior. I can honestly say NBC would have probably given up on soaps if Reilly wasn't writing for DAYS then.

Instead of PGP helping AW the same way Columbia/Corday allowed Reilly to take risks(that WORKED!), they decided to allow NBC free reign over the show and make it more Reilly-esque.

Susan Lee is a heartless C-U-Next-Tuesday. She cancelled two soaps in less than six months of each other and ripped off THE VIEW with LATER TODAY(which flopped really bad). She gave magazine and internet interviews that was supposed to make us feel sorry for her.

But Brian Frons is FAR WORSE! He makes no secret how his finger is in every pie in ABC Daytime and makes it no secret that GH is the one he pimps for Emmy every year. He SITS with GH at the Emmys every year! So, while GH's quality improves(not by much mind you), AMC and OLTL's quality greatly deteriorates because he doesn't "get" them. And quite frankly, never has.

Brian Frons is far worse because, unlike Susan Lee, Sheraton Kaloura, or Annamarie Kostura, he has said ageist and sexist comments. Not to mention how he basically said that Kathy Brier's Marcy was the token fat girl of ABC Daytime in an interview.

And as bad a writer as Jimmy Reilly is, at least he wants to write for different characters. Even if his own religious biases come into his work. Brian Frons wants ABC to be young, whitewashed, heterosexual bedhopping. Heaven forbid gays and people with HIV can live a normal life without having to mention that EVERY SINGLE EPISODE!

My rant sounds disjointed. But I understand where you're coming from. But I think NBC is in a different position because DAYS is a show that is not owned by them. ABC owns all their shows and are forced to live with the micromanagement that affects all the shows(especially the NY ones, which look like they are made on a shoestring budget).

NBC doesn't cancel shows, viewers do.

And that woman is no longer heading NBC Daytime ... let it go.

Well when Max talks about NBC not caring about their viewers, she HAS to be the first to come to mind because she was the one who perpetuated the DAYS/PASSIONS combo in 99, a mold that NBC has never been able to get out of.

I've already let it go. AW and BEACH live on through SOAPnet, streaming video, and tapes. The only cancellations that really got to me were THE CITY's in 1997 and PORT CHARLES's in 2000.

There appears to be an effort to improve things at NBC right now, at least with DAYS. ABC just gets worse and worse.

I think that is correct. I think Frons is to blame for that too. He is too hands' on. He demeans fans and he is entirely out of touch with viewers.

DOOL is getting better. I hope they continue to bring back characters and I hope they use some of them like Steve and Kayla and Bo and Hope more. I believe that DOOL did drop the ball in not taking full advantage of the enthusiasm over Steve and Kayla's return.

Because maybe we haven't heard anything from Annamarie Kostura and Tom Alfieri since they took over NBC Daytime. They haven't made any comments in the magazines, or showed up on SoapNet, or made sure their faces were shown at the Daytime Emmys, or playing favorites with couples, or made comments about other soaps, or said anything about retired old people, or kissing up to actors, or making comments on people's weight.

So basically, we don't know much about Kostura or Alfieri to criticize or praise.

Toups is exactly right. Believe me, I have been very critical of NBC and Kalouria when he was in power. I just may have not posted my opinions here. I hated Kalouria and his "youth" movement and also his love of Jim Reilly.

But the new regime seems to want Days to succeed and let Ken Corday kick JER to the curb and hire Hogan Sheffer. Of course, it came with a price to let go of some actors, but Days needed to do that anyway.

As for Brian Frons, maybe at some point he will come to the realization that you cannot alienate the long time fans. They are the reason the shows are still on the air.

I look at Frons like James E. Reilly. Frons used to be really good at his job when he first started both at NBC in the 80's and ABC in the 90's like JER was in the 90's and VERY early 2000's. There comes a time, however, when you need to hang up your hat. Both of them have lost their touch and their magic. Frons' comments in magazines grow more and more moronic, but I can't take away any of the success he has had running some networks' daytime programming. And yes, whether people believe it or not, he's had some! But his time has passed so I wish he'd just give it up.

Drew, I think you might have missed my point. I HAVE let it go. Others have not. When AW was cancelled, although I was ticked at the time, I thought "well, there goes another great show down the drain" and I shifted over to ATWT. I was content with watching Edge reruns when USA bought the show and would be content to watch AW on SoapNet... if we GOT SoapNet in West Michigan, but that's another story... There are many people who still refuse to give NBC the time of day for that reason. Had I been that ticked at the network, I'd have turned off Days.

Susan Lee is no longer there. True... if any woman deserved to get fired, it was her. That situation with AW and Sun was so badly handled. And yes, Brian Frons did a great job running NBC in the late 1980s... he gave attention to all the shows, rather than just one (Oh, GH? Are you listening? lol)

I believe Passions is in greater danger of cancellation than some people think, unless those budget cuts helped NBC avoid producing the show at a loss. Days is in greater shape than it has been in years.

Sorry, but speaking for someone who was a die-hard fan of Santa Barbara & Another World (17+ years), it's not that easy to let go of, especially in the case of Another World. People forget that AW's ratings were slowly inching up and they were experiencing a creative renaissance of sorts (with Chris Goutman at the helm) at the time of their demise. It was pretty well-known that Sunset Beach was going to be cancelled no matter what, so when they did in AW, it stunk to high heaven. Any viewer who followed SUN's ratings since its inception knew there was no hope for it. It was a PR fiasco because NBC didn't credit their viewers with having any intelligence whatsoever. Merely a month after AW went off the air, SUN was dropped in many markets, and moved to late night (2 AM) timeslots in most that kept it. Clearly, they had no faith in it. AW's demise stung and those of us that were fans really felt it. To further worsen matters, DAYS went through a terrible period shortly thereafter (courtesy of Langan).

I used to be a devoted NBC viewer (SFT/GEN, DAYS, AW, SB/SUN). Now, I'm not (watch DAYS, watch PSNS infrequently).

Like previously posted, NBC, to a degree, has attempted to clean up it's act recently, and seems to be back on track. Days has hired a mulitiple Emmy winning writer, and JER is back on his original soap full time. NBC has been straightening up it's act as of late. Can the same be said of ABC Daytime? NO!

I love GH, what a GREAT historically rich show. Think of all the opportunities this show has to dominate the ABC line up. The wealth of characters and the rich history of this show could be it's saving grace, and just like Days, it has a ravenous fan following that could carry it to the very top under the right cirumstances. Both Days and GH are a franchise, with an almost cult like followings. Yet, Days has realized it's wrongs, and GH, thanks to Fronz and Guza, refuses to smell the coffee.

AMC is a wreck. It was once my second favorite show, and I'm pissed about it's condition and refuse to even watch it after last week. It's hard to follow, difficult to watch, and has the feel of a unorganized MTV video gone bad.

OLTL is hideous, and the writer (Higley) should stick to something, lets say, less complex than Daytime drama. She can't write for more than four or five characters at a time, and when she tries umbrella storylines, they turn out to be devestating. "The Earthquake" made me stop watching Days until Reilly came back in August of 2004.

I can blame Fronz all day long because he likes to open his big, zealous mouth and say exactly what fans do NOT want to hear. He almost gets a high off pissing us off, so therefore, I can look at his arrogance and cringe.

NBC and CBS have both proven they can admit their wrongs and try to recover. Fronz never admits he is wrong, so therefore, until he's gone, ABC will sink.

On Days alone, there are 8 contract cast members over the age of 50. This is more than any of the other ABC soaps. There are also only 7 people under the age of 30 on contract. This is less than any ABC show.

Ugh. I hate it when people flaunt the fact that their show has a low number of young people on contract. Ageism goes both ways and I think it's just as bad to have 7 young people on contract as it is to have 7 older people on contract. There should be a balance on both ends.

NBC daytime fans are some of the most vocal and critical of their shows. Look at the number of threads in Spoiler Island where posters screamed about the firings of Ashford, Peck, and Clark. And don't forget the Salem Stalker story, and Ashford's other departure that caused the boards to crash. When the higher-ups do stupid stuff, we let the Internet know it.

The big differences though, are that Frons refuses to admit ABCD is [!@#$%^&*] now, and he's mouthed off too much. NBCD, at least recognizes its problems (with DAYS anyway) and attempts to fix things. You also don't hear a lot of trash talk, except that time when Corday got angry and refused to give SOW spoilers because it criticized DAYS. That was stupid, but it wasn't as nearly as bad as the garbage that spews out of Frons' mouth.

Something that I notice with DAYS fans is that a lot of them (not all, mind you) seem to ALWAYS defend what's currently on their screen. But once changes are made, then they bash what the show was before those changes.

For example, people were singing the show's praises all throughout the spring and early summer, but once it was speculated that Sheffer was coming in, people were quick to dismiss what JER was doing for the show, even tho, just weeks earlier, they were hailing his return to traditional storytelling.

This was not meant as an attack towards any person or group, it was just an observation that I've noticed.

I'm glad you pointed out this phenomenon. I don't follow the Days situation but I've noticed it here by some of the AMC fans. Things took a dive starting in February of last year but the material was defended. Then in the summer people finally admitted the spring sucked, but the summer was defended. Then in the fall people admitted the summer was bad "but it's good now". And then once the fall was over people admitted it was awful.
