Have GH 60 & Y&R 50 Been Underwhelming?
Y&R's 50th anniversary episodes were decent considering the show is in budget mode.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
@Paul Raven 1982/83 Knots Landing finished 20th and Hill Street Blues finished 21st, and Knots Landing would out-rate Hill Street Blues in the seasonal ratings for the remainder of Hill Street Blues run. 1982/83 was also Cheers first season and as we all know, it didn't take off until The Cosby Show came along and pulled up the rest of the NBC Thursday comedy block.

B&B: Old/Classic Discussion & Articles
B&B hit a lull from when Bradley took over in 1993 until late 1994. All of Bradley's storylines culminated during the first half of 1995 then second half of 1995 the tanking started. I will forever maintain that it was the huge rise of time slot rival Reilly's Days from 1993-1997 that shook up both Y&R and B&B.

Roles that Suffered After 3 or More Recasts
The issue is Y&R post-Bill Bell. ED's 1999 return saw a coldness and hardness added to Ashley that wasn't really there before. That might have been due to Bill Bell no longer writing or a change in ED's acting style from her time on Days. Bill Bell recognized that ED's acting style didn't lend itself to allow him to write original recipe Ashley as a heroine in the vein of Chris Brooks and Leslie before her and Caroline and Christine after her, so original recipe Ashley was written as the confident goal-oriented Abbott daughter on track to a successful business career. ED's acting style also made it difficult for Bill Bell to write a viable love interest for Ashley, that's why the pairings with Brian, Eric, Marc tanked. 1984-1988 Ashley/Victor storylines worked because Bill Bell saw that EB was a match for ED's acting style.

@Soapsuds 1983 American Music Awards were held January 17 so you posted the week ending January 23. No Magnum, P.I. on January 20, 1983; that date CBS aired new 2 hour Simon & Simon and a CBS Reports documentary. No Dallas on January 21, 1983; that date CBS aired new The Dukes of Hazzard, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest. January 23, 1983 was the series premiere of The A-Team.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
The Cosby Show season 2 premiere picks up where it left off the previous season with a #1 finish. Murder, She Wrote season 2 premiere also picks up where it left off the previous season with a second weekly win over Dallas. The new hotness Miami Vice about to blow up. Murder, She Wrote got their first weekly win over Dynasty. The tide is shifting on Fridays with Miami Vice finishing ahead of Falcon Crest season 5 premiere. Two weeks into the season and it's pretty clear Dallas and Dynasty were no longer battling for #1, they were jockeying for position in the Top 10.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
In the early 1980s CBS was successful in replacing their aging dramas and dramas with short runs that showed little to no growth with new dramas that would become hits. Thursday line up The Waltons, Hawaii Five-O, Barnaby Jones gave way to the eventual new Thursday line up Magnum, P.I.; Simon & Simon, Knots Landing. The Incredible Hulk gave way to new Friday drama Falcon Crest. Lou Grant gave way to new Monday drama Cagney & Lacey.

That week on Dallas, episode The Gathering Storm: Jock threatens to sell Ewing Oil if Miss Ellie divorces him; Lucy's career puts her marriage in jeopardy; Cliff learns of the Asian coup. 1980/81 Dallas was at its peak and it was a killer show. 18 out of 23 episodes finished #1 and the remaining 5 episodes finished 2nd.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
1984/85 the primetime soaps pulled out all the stops to out-do each other. That could have also played a part in why they all tanked the following season.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
I would guess the episodes that were split were those that ran for 90 minutes or two hours during their original broadcast. Oprah went national in Fall 1986 and that changed the network affiliate syndication game. I remember Dallas reruns on The Nashville Network around 1996, 1997 but I don't recall them rerunning Knots Landing in that same time. I think it was TNT that reran Knots Landing in the 1990s.
-
Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Did primetime soap reruns have success in syndication before the growth of cable? Somehow I can't picture a CBS affiliate airing reruns of Dallas/Knots Landing/Falcon Crest at 4 pm opposite an ABC or NBC affiliate airing Oprah. Plus with syndication episodes are cut for more commercials so key portions of the storylines or pivotal character moments could be missing.
