  1. They are really, really trying to push momentum for this film before final voting starts. Of course, that’s somebody’s job (a whole bunch of people’s jobs actually), and they have an opening in an unsettled Best Picture race. Not sure the push has been handled the best, though.
  2. I remember the Emily/Tom affair, but didn’t they push it as some clever remake of the Susan/Bob infidelity? It didn’t seem like too many characters introduced in that era (98-99) stuck around. Brad took a long break before Austin Peck took over. Maybe TC’s version of Katie is the only one. It’s interesting that even when AMC/OLTL/GH slipped in total viewers during the ‘90s (and AMC and OLTL falling behind ATWT/GL at times), the ABC lineup still did so much better in the demos. A lot of that was just the lingering success and buzz from the ‘80s. But in certain weeks in the 2000s, AMC/GH/OLTL (and DAYS) all outrated Y&R in female 18-49 some weeks, even when they were far behind it in households. It was this “if we can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” mentality that really hurt the CBS shows and accelerated their demises. (I suppose it was easier to try to replicate the banal hipness of ABC than the crazy, Reilly-era DAYS, even though we certainly saw a lot of Reilly-esque stupidity all over in the late ‘90s.)
  3. Oooh lord. At least, she made her spill look classy.
  4. Peyton was pretty bad on ATWT from what I remember. I was somewhat surprised that she did well initially. Jennifer Landon is (was?) on Animal Kingdom and has had a pretty glam makeover, but with all the hype surrounding her, you’d think she’d have five Oscars. And you’re right: none of them had good writing. I wondered what Agim Kaba was up to and saw he tweets a lot about politics and Premier League soccer. Also saw he acknowledged KSJ’s passing.
  5. It’s funny: as bad as the show was in the 2000s, they had a pretty strong young scene (Magnussen, Chando, Soffer, Landon—Peyton List and Zach Roerig have done really well post-ATWT and Van Hansis has more of a career I thought he would).
  6. So you’d say 1986-87 were the peak Marland years? It’s basically all on YouTube, I know. ATWT always struck me as colder than GL during the early ‘90s. GL had such verve and energy, some of which was JFP amping things up, I’m sure. Aside from really solid actors like Scott DeFreitas and Andrew Kavovit, I also felt like GL had a more charismatic young cast (Nia Long, Melissa Hayden, Monti Sharp, Rachel Miner, Bryan Buffington). Again, my viewing was spotty. ATWT and OLTL really were the “issue” soaps in the early ‘90s, weren’t they? I do find the mid-‘80s ATWT to have a much warmer vibe than what I’d seen with my mom as a teenager. Even just seeing HBS and Gregg Marx (warm) vs Dolan/Holmes (cold) makes a huge difference.
  7. I never understood the logic that if they thought ART was dry and unappealing, the answer is to replace her with SUSAN BATTEN. But if it was just to hook up a bestie who’d just been killed off a competing show, I understand it only *slightly* more.
  8. I remember Courtney was bulimic. I also remember Lauryn Hill playing an illiterate street girl (another one on soaps) and Lisa disapproving of Duncan and Jessica’s wedding. Lots of Emma and Iva and the Snyder Farm. Still, I just recall snatches and moments and individual scenes. My mom loved it, but it seemed dry compared to OLTL. Broderick was there for Susan Batten/Connor, right? What a sh!tshow that was.
  9. Actually, Broderick first.year was great but it soon went downhill. As for Marland.....yeah...loved his writing...so many great stories....a lot which is not on youtube. I liked a lot of Broderick’s run. She did Camille/Brad, Eddie Silva/Georgia, and Samantha/Lucinda, right? I followed her from AMC, where she was brilliant (until she wasn’t), but she never really caught fire at ATWT. I do remember watching some of Marland’s stuff live when I couldn’t wrest control of the TV away from my mom. Holden’s amnesia and Lucinda keeping his whereabouts in NYC a secret? The Neal Alcott/Royce Keller story? Courtney and Andy? Darryl Crawford? Rosanna and Hutch? I have vivid memories of a lot of it, but I didn’t watch day-to-day like I did OLTL around that time. OLTL had a young coming-out story and AIDS quilts and edgy college stories and then the Dorian/Viki feud reignited. I was also young, so I tended to watch whatever Michael Logan praised in TVG. He loved Carly/Rosanna/Mike and Lily/Damian/Orlena, so I tuned in for those stories. I watched a lot more when OLTL got really, really bad in the late ‘90s, but then ATWT also got really, really bad until the first year of Hogan, which seemed like a breath of fresh air at the time.
  10. Cilic has withdrawn:
  11. Monfils = still dangerous when he wants to be and is healthy. Just beat Tsitsipas in Sofia. No Stefanos/Daniil rematch in the SFs.
  12. Matt Smith's Robert Mapplethorpe movie premieres in NYC, LA, and Chicago March 1.
  13. Woody Allen is suing Amazon for $68 million.
  14. I can sort of see why people thought Bradley was whining because he’s a debut filmmaker and Spike Lee is 35 years into his storied career and only now receiving his first Best Director nomination. But yeah I’m sure he was disappointed. The movie had been hyped to the gills since early fall, and he was thought to be a frontrunner. It’s hard to not buy into all of that.
