I think early As the World Turns under Irma Phillips and the writin into the mid 70s was like this. You really didn’t need a plot but could just watch characters interact

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
In 1980 after they ended the ill-fated 90 minute version of Another World and moved it from 2:30 Eastern to 2:00 and begat Texas running at 3. The Young and the Restless expanded to 1 hour around the same time airing at 1-2 pushing ATWT to 2-3 opposite AW and Guuding Light 3-4 opposite Texas I’m still saying CBS claimed they couldn’t move EON to 3,3:30, or I suppose 4 because it would compete against P and G s Another Would and Somerset breaking the sponsors no compete rule However ABC didn’t seem to have a problem not complying with P&Gs rule

This could have been done. Similar to how they changed Barbara Ryan from victim to bitch on As the World Turns

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
They went against Somerset at 4 at ABC So they were really talking out of the sides of their mouths on this bit about P&G soaps competing

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Forty six years ago on December 1, 1975, The Edge of Night moved from CBS to ABC to make room for the expanded As the World Turns. This nail in the coffin was a result of poor decisions from CBS and especially Proctor and Gamble. Moving Edge’s time slot to accommodate P and Gs plan to have all their soaps in a block resulted in lost viewers. Then there was supposedly no room to put Edge in another time slot when ATWT expanded because P and G didn’t want their soaps to compete on other networks (like Another World). They could have done more to keep it I wonder if it would have done better at ABC at 3:30 instead of 4 where many affiliates preempted it One Life to Live could have moved to 2:30 They had not expanded to 45 minutes yet although plans may have been in place

Most of the storylines I remember and love go way back Who remembers the Gaslight storyline where Sara marries Lee Gantry on the rebound from Joe. It was at an old country farmhouse. Gantry with the help of his blackmailing housekeeper Miss Foss (played by Jan Sterling) tried to make Sara go mad to get her money I remember them opening the loose brick in the attic (almost daily) that hid his first wife’s diary. And as a kid I vividly remember seeing Miss Foss fall from the attic window and seeing her dead with eyes wide open This is the way to write soaps

Good episode. I forget Meg was faking her pregnancy? Was Dusty drunk? Same Marland plot different names. Girl from wrong side of tracks (Bobbie, Nola, Meg) either sleeps with or makes stud (Scotty, Kelly, Dusty) believe it happened in order to break up with privileged girlfriend (Laura, Morgan, Lily)

It would be good if a surprise guest came on and took over like Scott D (Andy) did with Don Hastings and Katherine Hayes

Do you suppose Alan will apologize on behalf of Eileens fans how shabbily she was treated in the end?

Alan’s interview with Judith McConnel (Valerie) She had trouble understanding him. Either she has hearing issues or he talks too softly. Or it could be technical issues

I don’t remember interactions with Lisa and Natalie I do remember a funny scene with Joyce and Natalie eating together at a restaurant and they saw Nancy. I think they were laughing about Nancy’s reaction to them being teamed up I don’t remember the details Maybe Nancy expressed her disapproval of Natalie

Never been a fan of replacing established characters with younger actors. Nicole on Edge of Night comes to mind

Who introduced the Dan/Susan/Elizabeth/Paul storyline? Could it have been Irna’s daughter writing under a pen name? That would have been an interesting twist if Irma resented a storyline her daughter created. This plot was intriguing but seemed to drag on. There seemed to be a fascination during this time period with brothers involved with the same woman (Mike/Ed/Leslie on TGL; Bill/Mickey/Laura on DOOL) Who knows if Irna had issues with the morality of these characters (which is hard to believe since she gave us the Bob/Kim/Jennifer thing) or more likely just had issues with the Liz character and actress The storyline I loved during this era was Michael Shea. His marriage to Claire, affair and child with Lisa, marriage to Lisa, and murder and trial. There were so many facets to this plot including Ellen being revealed as Dan’s mother and his protege John Dixon was introduced. Great storytelling

JR Ewing and his copies
Whit Mcalll on ATWT sort of like JR business tycoon The Abbots on Y & R often would eat breakfast together reminiscent of the Ewings The Spaulding on GL even though they were created before Dallas

Good clip. Slow moving and long scenes. I enjoy that but that style wouldn’t fly in current soap culture

Texas! Discussion Thread
I wonder if this show would have had a better start if they aired it at 2 and AW at 3. Of course AW would have had to be strong enough to compete against GH In hindsight, if they hadn’t done the AW 90 minute experiment, there would be no need for Texas, AW would have had one less spike in its coffin and The Doctors would remain at 2:30 instead of the deadly 12:30 slot and then 12

In many ways the hour expansions hindered many soaps. Lemay’s objective was for longer scenes and dialogue which he did well. But eventually large casts and new families were added taking away from the original core families.
