This explains what Joe Biden said and didn't say regarding the racist comments by the presenters at the Tr*mp rally -- A confusion due to an apostrophe: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/oct/29/joe-biden-puerto-rico In the typed text of Biden's speech: he said supporter's not supporters. But when spoken aloud, it sounds the same. Biden said regarding the Trump rally in New York: The only garbage I see is his supporter's (his supporter's garbage) Biden didn't say: The only garbage I see is his supporters (the people who support him) -------- And then Biden issued this statement afterwards: https://x.com/JoeBiden/status/1851436643498037614 "Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don't reflect who we are as a nation." --------

as it says above: Voting experts have long warned that comparing voting rolls to DMV data is not a reliable way to find non-citizens on the rolls because there may be paperwork errors and people can become naturalized after getting their driver’s license. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit said they had identified several people who were in fact citizens but had their registrations wrongly canceled. Over 1600 voters were removed from Virginia's voting rolls, including some citizens who were born in Virginia. Federal courts had ruled that the voters needed to be restored, so the State(Commonwealth) of Virginia took it to the U.S. Supreme Court, asking that the restoration be stopped. ----------- Update Wednesday October 30: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/oct/30/supreme-court-virginia-voter-registration The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Virginia does not have to restore the registrations of 1,600 voters, some of whom appear to have been wrongly removed. The Virginia attorney general, Jason Miyares, a Republican, praised the U.S. Supreme Court’s action, saying it would “keep noncitizens off our voter rolls”. Virginia, which is predicted to vote for Kamala Harris this fall, provides same-day voter registration, allowing anyone who was wrongfully removed to re-register at the polls. - My response to the above: With six days to go, how will they reach all those voters who were wrongly removed, to tell them to go vote anyhow with whatever documentation might be needed? Hopefully the lawsuit has a list of everyone and how to reach them.

Lifelong Virginian among 1,600 voters to have registration cancelled https://www.nbcwashington.com/decision-2024/lifelong-virginian-among-1600-voters-to-have-registration-cancelled/3753313/ Shantae Martin clearly remembers the first time she voted, at the insistence of her grandmother. She cast her first ballot for Barack Obama. A big surprise recently arrived in the mail; a letter from election officials told Martin, 37, her voter registration had been cancelled because she’s a noncitizen. Martin, a lifelong Virginian, was baffled. “I was confused, to be honest. I was born and raised in Woodbridge, Virginia, so, you’ve got everything about me and now you’re saying that I’m an alien. Why would you let me vote before and not now?” she asked in an interview with News4. Martin is one of 1,600 Virginians whose voter registration was cancelled after Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order on Aug. 7 ordering election officials to speed up the process of purging noncitizens form voter rolls. In many cases, the voters were removed because they checked a box or missed checking a box on a DMV form designating them as a noncitizen. The Department of Justice and groups representing immigrant communities filed suit and said the purge violated a federal law that bars voter registration cancellations so close to an election. “So many stories have come out. These are U.S. citizens. They are being prohibited their right to vote,” said Monica Sarmiento, executive director of the Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights. That’s Martin’s story and why it’s included in the lawsuit. She got a new driver’s license in the spring and suspects some type of mistake was made. Both a federal judge and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the purge violated federal law and ordered all 1,600 voters be reinstated. HOWEVER -- despite that court ruling ordering the reinstatement ... The State (Commonwealth) of Virginia asked the U.S. Supreme Court to block the reinstatement of voters, writing, “States are free to systematically remove noncitizens, as well as minors and fictitious persons, at any time, including within 90 days of an election, without running afoul of the [National Voter Registration Act].”

Interesting. Meredith Lord had an impact on me personally (maybe not to the canvas of Llanview) but to me. I was a teen watching her story live and it affected me. I cried a lot.

re: previous post, on the fire at the drop-off ballot box in Clark County, Washington State: fyi, Clark County, Washington is part of a U.S. congressional district of Wash. State -- a district that votes liberal in some towns and very conservative in other towns. (The district borders Portland Oregon on the south but is also comprised of some very conservative rural areas) Complicated district. Ms. Jaime Herrera Beutler was the Congresswoman from that district previously (2011 through January 2023). She's a Republican who voted against impeaching Tr*mp in 2019, but then was one of the few Republicans who voted in favor of impeaching him in 2021. In general, she supported Republican stances and Tr*mp's agenda most of the time; but January 6th was too much for her and she supported the establishment of the Jan 6th Commission. Herrera Beutler lost in the 2022 Republican primary to an election-denier (Joe Kent). A Democrat won the Nov. 2022 general election for that district, defeating Joe Kent. The district was won in 2022 by Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, who is a "Blue Dog Democrat". She began serving in January 2023. She is running for reelection in 2024, against the same Republican election denier (Joe Kent) that she defeated in 2022.

Drop-off ballot boxes in Vancouver Washington and Portland Oregon set afire. Early this morning Monday October 28. (fyi, Vancouver Wash and Portland OR are adjoining cities on the state line) Note: There is zero in-person voting in Washington state and Oregon. Both Washington state and Oregon are mail-only states, but you can either mail your ballot or drop it off in an official ballot box. https://www.katu.com/news/local/vancouver-ballot-box-seen-smoking-same-morning-as-portland-ballot-box-arson The Clark County Washingon elections auditor told KATU that the last ballot pickup at the box that was set afire -- was 11 a.m. PDT Saturday October 26. Hundreds of ballots were inside at the time of the burning, and KATU was told there were maybe only a few that could be saved. Anyone who dropped off a ballot since then is urged to immediately contact Clark County Elections for a new ballot. https://clark.wa.gov/elections Just a few hours earlier, Portland OR police had responded to an arson at a SE Portland ballot box. Elections officials in Multnomah County OR said only three ballots were destroyed at the ballot box at Southeast 10th and Morrison streets in Portland, thanks to a fire suppressant inside the box. https://www.oregonlive.com/news/2024/10/a-second-ballot-box-fire-this-time-in-clark-county-destroys-hundreds-of-ballots.html

From Jennifer Rubin of Washington Post Opinion: Voting for Trump means putting Vance in charge Quoting excerpts from her column: In many ways, the prospective vice president is more dangerous than Trump. Mainstream news outlets now feature stories about felon and former president Donald Trump’s “strikingly erratic, coarse and often confusing” rambling speeches, “cognitive decline,” and bizarre behavior. This evidence of mental breakdown, coupled with his event cancellations due to reports of “exhaustion” (reports his campaign has denied), give voters every reason to think that Trump could not complete a second term or would be “out of it.” Either way, his vice-presidential pick, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), the most disliked man ever to run for vice president, would be running the show. And considering the opposition from most of the “adults” from the first term, he might be relying on likely Trump Cabinet officials and advisers such as Kash Patel, Stephen K. Bannon, Richard Grenell, Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Vance is far more ideological than Trump, who blows with the wind on everything from a national abortion ban to Social Security. And Vance is every bit as enmeshed in the fever world of conspiracies — from the antisemitic obsession with George Soros as the mastermind behind Democratic causes to the “great replacement theory” to election denial — with ties to other conspiratorialists. He is a better spoken, more erudite conspiracy monger. Moreover, few doubt that Vance, who has extensive ties to Project 2025, would likely be raring to implement the wholesale remaking of the federal government. If Trump might be distracted or convinced the plan would make him unpopular, an ideologue such as like Vance might well be more committed to implementing its crackpot ideas. --- Jennifer Rubin goes on to talk about Vance's foreign policy, his opposition to Ukraine, and his support for Orbán of Hungary, and she says this: while Trump might be bamboozled by flattering dictators who know how to play him, Vance shows an affinity for their aims and positions Full column here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/10/28/trump-vance-election/ Non-paywall version: https://archive.is/Xoguf Twitter link to this column: https://x.com/PostOpinions/status/1850967786710761901

I was wondering how TWENTY Washington Post columnists were able to have an article in their paper about why they were upset about the nonendorsement. I finally clicked to read... They wrote it as a "Letter to the Editor" and it's in the opinions section of the Post as a Letter to the Editor from all 20 of them. And the PostOpinions twitter account tweeted out the link: https://twitter.com/PostOpinions/status/1849951210381480379 This is their joint letter published Oct 25 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/10/25/post-columnist-no-endorsement-2024-trump-harris/ No-paywall copy of same: https://archive.is/Jzqzv Yes it's TWENTY columnists. The first tweet I quoted (via @Vee ) from WaPo columnist John Hudson, said it was *eight* but it's actually twenty. They must have added more names to their letter after he tweeted that. Hoffman David Ignatius Heather Long Ruth Marcus Dana Milbank Alexandra Petri Eduardo Porter Catherine Rampell Molly Roberts Eugene Robinson Jennifer Rubin Karen Tumulty Erik Wemple

For anyone who can't see the whole tweet: I think a full page graphical editorial in the NYT against Tr*mp.. is obviously needed on all media, but especially NYT since he did that full-page ad in that paper against the Exonerated Five.- The Politics Thread

Really just watch the whole Michelle Obama speech, and then pass it on, worth your time! Worth everyone's time! You might work on tasks while you're listening but then wow become mesmerized. One of the best speeches I've heard in my life about what it's like to be a woman and (as a woman myself) she touches on things that nobody talks about but should be talked about.- DAYS: R.I.P. thekatemulgrew Jeri Taylor was responsible, in large part, for changing my life. She was elegant, erudite, and fiercely opinionated. She wanted Kathryn Janeway to be a significant part of her legacy and I think there is no doubt that in that endeavor she succeeded. I owe her a debt of gratitude. Yeah some shows do release fake names in casting that give clues to the actual character name... here are two examples: In 2014, the casting announcement for Y&R was for the character "Aaron Newton" but they didn't veil it well, because speculation was that it was obviously Adam Newman -- and indeed Justin Hartley was cast as Adam. In 2023, it was announced that AnnaLynne McCord was cast as "Marin" for DAYS and there was speculation that it was a code name for Abigail Deveraux -- because Ashley Benson once played Abigail on DAYS and then Benson went on to play "Hannah Marin" in the Pretty Little Liars shows. Turns out that McCord's character is "FakeAbigail" who was recently revealed to be Cat Greene. But yeah, when casting for a brand new soap, I don't think it would be spoilerish to give out the character names. Maybe it's just something casting directors are used to doing.- The Politics Thread

More details on the fraudulent registrations in Lancaster County PA https://www.npr.org/2024/10/25/nx-s1-5165382/lancaster-county-voter-registration-fraud In a news conference Friday with board members, Lancaster County District Attorney Heather Adams said numerous applications appeared to have the same handwriting and other details, like addresses, appeared incorrect on some applications. https://lancasteronline.com/news/politics/lancaster-county-da-commissioners-link-fraudulent-voter-registrations-to-paid-canvassing-update/article_5132ce60-92dd-11ef-9ec2-d32918af4f5b.html A large number of suspicious voter registration applications were dropped off at the county elections office near Monday's deadline, county officials said. An investigation by the district attorney's office found incorrect addresses, false identification information, false names and names that did not match Social Security information. The officials said one or two organizations that conducted registration drives in the county in recent months were responsible for the applications. They did not name the organizations. The district attorney did not provide information on who was funding the canvassers but asked anyone who had been approached about suspicious registrations to contact her office. "It appears to be an organized effort," Adams said, noting that the investigation is ongoing. Adams said her investigators found problems with 60% of the registrations they have so far reviewed. She did not say how many of the 2,500 registrations had been investigated. She said applications came from people living in the city, as well as Columbia, Elizabethtown, Akron, Ephrata, Stevens and Strasburg. She also said the same organization or organizations responsible for submitting the registrations were believed to be active in two other counties. She did not name those counties but said her investigators had reached out to them. Some of the registration applications submitted by the groups were found to be genuine, Adams said, and those voters will be registered. - The Media/Journalism Thread
