ARTICLE: Jacob Martinez Cast As New Javi Hernandez On ‘Days Of Our Lives’, Replacing Al Calderon
This is kind of cool https://www.out.com/gay-tv-shows/jacob-martinez-javi-days-of-our-lives "Johnny Carson and I both come from the same small town in Nebraska called Norfolk," he said. "I was lucky enough to grow up performing in the Johnny Carson Theatre in high school. I will never forget my first role as a freshman, playing the T-Bird 'Doody' in Grease. All the upperclassmen in that production made the theatre feel like home, which inspired me to continue performing on that stage in more ways than just theatre. Choir, show choir, and one-acts became major outlets for me in that space." "You see, the Johnny Carson show was filmed on the Burbank studio lot, which is exactly where Days of Our Lives films!" he marveled. "I used to pass by his mural every time I took the stage in Norfolk, and now I pass by his mural every day on my way to set. I always make sure to give him a wink as I walk by and say, 'Thanks, Johnny.'"

ARTICLE: Jacob Martinez Cast As New Javi Hernandez On ‘Days Of Our Lives’, Replacing Al Calderon
Jacob Martinez talks about that here: https://www.out.com/gay-tv-shows/jacob-martinez-javi-days-of-our-lives "Being Hispanic, gay, and an emergency medical technician definitely helped me draw from real-life experiences when I got the role. But after reading the first few scripts, it became clear to me what truly drives this character: his heart," Martinez said. "Javi is the type of person who constantly puts others before himself — not only on the job, but in his personal life as well."

I agree that Sussman made the show feel like home after the nonstop action of Pratt and whatever Mal Young was doing. I really appreciated that she brought back the simple ritual of the adult Abbott siblings all eating breakfast together in the dining room, like they had done with John. I realize that's not a "storyline" in itself, but it helped to frame the show, and make it feel like home again. There were other essences of characters she understood. As she said in her exit interview, she wasn't used to the expectations of modern soap viewers; and as some have said, she didn't have strong storyline pacing. I do agree it would have been better to hire someone with a storyline bible, instead of having to make her wing it --- and if that were possible, then maybe she would have succeeded then, or could succeed in the future. But it seemed from her exit interview that she wouldn't want to do soaps again unless she could do more meaningful storylines and not soap tropes. I do have an issue with Sussman's husband Tony Morina being sued for sexual harassment, and I wonder how she felt about that. I felt it icky that Julie Chen stood by Les Moonves. Sussman never made a statement, so I have no idea how she felt. I don't blame her for her husband; but I wonder what her thoughts were.

I hadn't heard that, but it's interesting, now that I look at the HW/EP timeline and compare that with various interviews. Young was supervising producer under JFP and Pratt. Then Young/Sussman became co-EPs while Sussman was HW. Then Sussman exited and Young became HW and sole EP. Sussman said in her exit interview that she created Teriah (their first kiss aired just before she was fired). Mal Young used to boast that he was responsible for the first lesbian kiss on a UK show, and I think he even had that boast on his twitter profile at one time. (It was on the show Brookside that Young produced). But Sussman wrote Teriah, and from what she said, it was her idea. Maybe Young ran with it, but it was her idea. Sussman mentioned in her exit interview that her writing of Dina was an Alzheimer's story (although the diagnosis was not mentioned during episodes credited to Sussman as HW). (I wonder if perhaps she was writing the gradual decline and erratic behavior that families don't recognize for what it is, and things can progress for a while -- before the family finally brings their loved one to the doctor much later on.) When Mal took over as HW, he immediately began to emphasize Dina's Alzheimer's illness and did interviews about it, and the Alzheimer's Association certainly thought it was all his idea. Mal said it was important to him because it happened to his mother in real life.

I am looking at @Toups' full timeline of EPs and HWs at Y&R. https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/9402-history-of-executive-producers-and-head-writers/ He has everyone on that thread -- -- except the most recent items, which are listed on the separate annual Directors and Writers Threads. Per tvinsider, Griffith's exit was announced to the cast and crew during the day of Friday June 26, the same day tvinsider learned of it. Per Deadline, the serial is on hiatus until Monday July 6. Yeah they told cast&crew just before everyone left for the week off. As @ranger1rg pointed out, Griffith has been giving enthusiastic interviews about upcoming storylines right up until this was announced, so this was likely an involuntary exit, despite the official line that Griffith decided to leave.

oh yeah I wasn't trying to defend Sussman by quoting her. The point of my post was the sloppy/hurried way the show hired her in a hurry. Even the fact that her husband was a supervising producer then, and she had Kay Alden as a consultant, was not enough to justify hiring her with one day notice. And yeah maybe she shouldn't have taken the job under those conditions. But regardless, Y&R seems to have made this decision in a big hurry.

This is Sally Sussman's arrival-at-Y&R interview with MichaelLogan for tvinsider/tvguide: https://www.tvinsider.com/102922/the-young-and-the-restless-new-head-writer-sally-sussman-answers-our-burning-questions/ This is Sally Sussman's exit-from-Y&R interview with JameyGiddens for DaytimeConfidential: https://daytimeconfidential.com/2017/08/10/sally-sussman-speaks-out-on-young-and-restless-and-lesbian-love-story Sussman's exit interview started out with Jamey referring to her having introduced Mariah/Tessa, but then she was fired shortly after Teriah kissed. She talks about that, but also speaks to her whole time at Y&R and refers to her initial interview with MichaelLogan. "When I came into Y&R last September, I had one day's notice to start the job. I had been traveling in France with my feature documentary [Midnight Return: The Story of Billy Hayes and Turkey], and hadn't been watching the show for several years. So, I had nothing prepared and never have started a job like that before. But because of the change happening so fast, I had to jump in with both feet. While starting to write the daily shows, I came up with several stories that I pitched the network; one of which is the love story between Mariah and a new character named Tessa. <snip> I know a lot of fans got upset by the only interview I did while at Y&R, which was last October with Michael Logan. He had been faithfully watching the show throughout all the head writer changes and really wanted answers to the loose ends that were left by my predecessor. What he didn't know is that night I had to fly to Vancouver where my 61-year-old brother just died suddenly and unexpectedly. He was my last surviving family member and it devastated me. Thinking about future stories for Y&R was the furthest thing from my mind, so I just made up a bunch of stuff because I hadn't gotten the chance to write a long-term yet. At that point, I honestly didn't think I could make six months in the job. So I’m thrilled to have made it to one year. My film, Midnight Return, has taken off in ways I didn’t expect and I have been approached to make another documentary. That’s where my passion and creativity are now." (She continues on to own what she wrote at Y&R and acknowledges that it's on her -- and nobody else is to blame). _ _ _ She says in one of these interviews that she hadn't followed Y&R in many years and didn't know the show anymore when she was hired, so she was grateful to have Kay Alden as her story consultant for that. _ _ _ What I got from all that is that Sussman respects the genre, and that she respects Logan and feels bad that she gave Logan a misleading interview. But more importantly, it speaks to how Y&R hired Sussman to begin with -- Y&R wanted to replace Pratt in a hurry and just threw her in there without a bible. Having Alden as a consultant was helpful but hiring a HW without a bible -- and more importantly "one day's notice to start the job" was not workable. So this is an issue with the Y&R process of replacing headwriters.

Sally Sussman started writing Dina having Alzheimer's symptoms playing out over time in storylines, but Dina's diagnosis wasn't announced before Sally left. Sally confirmed in her exit interview that it was indeed Alzheimer's. The formal diagnosis was written by Mal Young when he started. Sally felt this type of story was important for soaps to tell. Mal focused on this because his mother had Alzheimer's. from Sally's exit interview: "I was very wary of false drama; big events with no payoffs, no real stakes in the end where nothing changed. For example, no one died or was forever altered. I wanted the show (and the genre) to be more topical; to do issues that were really affecting people’s lives: example Dina Abbott’s struggle with Alzheimer's disease. This was a major reason I pursued the documentary genre because I felt daytime wasn’t living up to its potential. I’d felt the genre had been dumbed down and as a 30-year viewer, I lost interest. It wasn’t the genre I’d fallen in love with as a kid in the 70’s. But the sci-fi stuff, stolen babies, doppelgangers, people returning from the dead, etc. felt very passe to me, so I really hoped to make the show more cutting edge like daytime used to be in 80’s and 90’s, where the genre broke new ground. What I didn’t realize though is that the audience currently watching had really gotten used to this type of storytelling" Mal Young's interview with the Alzheimer's Association makes it sound like it was all his idea https://www.alz.org/blog/2017/how-alzheimer-s-ended-up-on-the-young-and-the-restless
