Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
Stafford’s comments are 35 mins in: I wonder what she means by Scott “tweaking” the scenes - that tells me that everyone realizes the material is not good and Scott is specifically there to try to enhance it somehow. Hoping this is the last effort to save Griffith’s ass and he’s gone at the end of his contract, if so.

- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
It makes you wonder how they even found money to re-do that Newman Ranch set or how they got that approved. Seems like they’re smarter ways to work around the budget limitations, but no one cared or put any thought into it. That’s probably why Ed Scott is back on board in the first place - they needed someone with keen production expertise to navigate the resources they have.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
Yep, and I think even at B&B the cuts to budget have been apparent.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
The Covid protocols also didn’t help production matters and I think they just stuck to some of those “quick fixes” long after things subsided.- GH: October 2024 Discussion Thread

MTS has talked for years about how much she missed the old set (though, it was apparently very fragile and breaking apart towards the end, which is why they ditched it). I wouldn’t be surprised if her hubby’s first move is to help give her that type of set back. 😂- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
I do wonder if Scott was consulting behind the scenes a bit before this announcement. A new Newman Ranch set is apparently debuting this week - and I damn well know Josh Griffith wasn’t overseeing that.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
On the topic of casting, Y&R hasn’t had a Casting Director since Nancy Nayor left over a year ago. Casting Associate Gregory Salmon is the only one listed in the credits - Casting Associates are responsible for casting dayplayers, those with 5 lines or less, and extras. Perhaps one of Scott’s first order of business is to find an actual Casting Director.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
People don’t realize that final casting is often not even down to the Casting Directors. For contract roles, they’re responsible for sourcing the talent and conducting initial auditions, and then selecting a shortlist of actors. However, from there, actors often then have to audition for the Producers of the show, and sometimes network executives. By the end of the process, the person who gets hired is often not even the Casting Director’s pick. Mark Teschner at GH often had more autonomy than the other Casting Directors on daytime - but even he has had to contend with Valentini’s “taste” in actors during Valentini’s time there. Ed does like to audition actors and direct screen tests. He did that at all his previous soaps, including B&B.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
That’s probably a good comparison - granted, soaps had better budgets back in 2007-2008 than they do not. But DAYS was a behind the scenes mess for Ed’s year there (some of that due to him, lol), and Hogan and then Dena’s writing was …. not very good for the most part. He’s facing a similar situation coming back to Y&R - but I do think the production aspects will immediately see his influences given how hands on he is.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
He’s indeed still very sharp - he produced B&B mostly recently in very much the same way he produced Y&R back in the day. He’s known for overseeing things in the booth with the directors and other producers - and then rushing out to the soundstage to give the actors notes firsthand. That requires a lot of energy to do each day the show is in production.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
I guess the question is why do they feel they need Ed Scott back on the producing team after all this time and after not having a Senior Producer on the team for this recent Griffith regime to date? Also, why did this warrant an announcement to an industry trade like Deadline? That doesn’t happen when producers who are not EP’s come in and out of various soaps. Are production matters so messy and fiscally irresponsible that they need someone like Scott to come in and sort out after all this time? If so, they’re really turning a blind eye to Griffith’s mismanagement of resources.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
Ron Carlivati is free and that’s a scary thought….🤮🤮🤮 But perhaps Sony has someone else in mind queue if this is their plan.- Y&R: Ed Scott Returns As Senior Producer
He was technically sharing Supervising Producer responsibilities with Casey Kasprzyk. I don't think B&B is hiring someone to replace Ed, or promoted anyone up yet. But, yeah, I definitely think B&B is going through the effects of a budget cut from their recent renewal. That said, I do think Y&R hiring Ed Scott back and someone from the "old guard" is a surprise and something they didn't have to do unless they saw an opportunity to make something better. I agree that the creative output won't get better or at least change until Griffith is gone, and I think Ed's main role, for now, will be to lead the physical production of the show and ensuring that the day to day in the studio runs smoothly (since Griffith and Kent are not technical producers in the studio overseeing production each day). We should definitely see his stamp on the production values, albeit with a more limited budget these days since soaps don't have extravagant budgets anymore. And who knows, with Ed now responsible for "executing" Griffith's material onscreen, maybe it will come off as something more watchable? Granted, no one at B&B can make Brad Bell's mess watchable either. Y&R also has a recent history of hiring replacements before people get fired. Griffith re-joined again for this latest stint under Mal, and when Mal was out, he was promoted to EP with Anthony Morina (then sole EP when Morina "left"). Before that, Mal had joined under JFP, and when she was fired, he took over as EP. Often where there's smoke there's fire, so there could be a chance Sony is gearing up to get rid of Griffith at the end of his contract cycle. Ed could end up as EP again with a new HW down the line. Just something to think about.- GH: October 2024 Discussion Thread
