  1. I think Bev mentioned she stopped putting herself up for consideration after her losses at AW. She definitely should have been nominated and won for her work in the early 90's. Maureen Garrett also not having one is a great travesty.
  2. Potter is definitely not without talent. I definitely think he did a lot to gracefully "contemporize" GL. Arguably, GL was the first of the old P&G soaps to really take on a more contemporary format and look in the mid/late 70's and I think Potter was a big part of that. If you compare that to Mary Ellis-Bunim's forced contemporization of SFT and latter ATWT, I'd say Potter was a more successful in every regard to get a soap that's often looked at as your "grandma's soap" into the modern world at that time.
  3. Patrick Mulcahey also described working with the Dobson's and Marland in similar terms. He said the Dobson's gave their scriptwriters a lot of creative liberties at Santa Barbara as long as they stuck within the very "loose" parameters of their outlines. Often he'd get notes from Bridget and Jerry that said, "do whatever the hell you want here" when it came to the dialogue. He also loved working with Marland, but said Marland wrote so much of the show himself and wanted to be thoroughly involved in every aspect. He hated Agnes Nixon's micromanagement style at Loving though - he called her a "school marm" that gave useless/ridiculous notes. I guess it's no wonder why things quickly went south between Marland and Nixon at Loving...
  4. For all her faults, JFP knew how to get her actors nominated for and sometimes win Emmy's, lol.
  5. Potter seemed to get along well with Bridget and Jerome Dobson - and I don't think you can get more "eccentric" than those two. And if I'm honest, I would rank the Dobson's GL work over Marland's.
  6. I think this is the first time I ever saw who Paul Lammers was (the best director ATWT ever had, IMO) - ATWT winning Best Directing in 1993. 37:25 in.
  7. I posted this in the Emmy forum, but the 1994 Emmy telecast is also up. That was a big year for GL and OLTL - those two shows split the acting categories evenly, and GL won for Directing and OLTL won for Writing. The big surprise? AMC winning Best Show despite not winning any other main award - OLTL wasn't even nominated in that category, and GL lost out again. This was also the year Michael Zaslow FINALLY won. The legendary Bruce S. Barry accepted for Directing, it's presented 56:55 in: Mulcahey was also part of Curlee's winning team. For some reason, I can't even spot him in that 1993 clip (maybe he didn't attend?). Curlee, Reilly, and Lorraine Broderick are very noticeable though. 21:57 in
  8. Even B&B has been feeling the effects of budget crunches lately, and has definitely started to deteriorate IMO (on the production end, writing has been TRASH for the longest). These soaps will never look presentable again under any conditions sadly. If the networks/production companies won't invest in them, neither will the folks doing the actual work.
  9. Yes, and he was kissing Agnes Nixon’s ass majorly. I guess talks about Loving had already started.
  10. I had never seen Allen Potter before, so that was nice. Patrick Mulcahey looks so cleaned-up and young, lol. Lisa Brown looks so overjoyed at these wins.
  11. Victor's ancient jizz was the source of so many fights. Didn't Ashley and Diane have one in the Jabot lab too?
  12. I don’t know what to think of Maura West sometimes. I feel like she’s been giving that same damn performance for years, regardless of the role. I’ve largely found her to be a steaming hot mess on GH for most of her run, but that’s probably an unpopular opinion.
  13. Stock up on those rolls of toilet paper, kiddo! This portion of As The World Turns was brought to you by Charmin. Enjoy the go with Charmin!
  14. Apparently, it was Barbara Bloom who forced Maura's casting on the show. MAB wasn't a fan and killed her off the first chance she got, which was extremely short-sighted for the character (but so was everything during that time).
  15. Ah, when did Michelle Forbes leave?
  16. Not only the strike, but GL also had a change in EP's during the story - from Joe Willmore to Robert Calhoun.
  17. The Dobson's always had a great knack for writing complex and interesting female characters. This would be evident when they went over to GL soon after.
  18. Esther and Kay's off-screen staff did a shitty job maintaining her mansion!
  19. It was also hugely impacted by the '88 writers strike, I believe. Or it may have started during the strike, something like that.
  20. It will be so good to see Kathryn again.
  21. It's documented from Nancy herself in the 2009 interview Toups, Dan, and I conducted with her. https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2009/04/an-interview-with-nancy-curlee Toups: How did you come up with three years worth of storylines without feeling burnt out? Curlee: By the end of my time there, frankly, I was burned out. More to do with endless meetings defending our work and pitching and justifying, than with the writing itself. But it is hard, under any circumstances, to maintain that kind of quality. I probably should have relinquished more control of it, in hindsight. I felt very protective of the material and the actors, and had a hard time saying okay, that’s good enough if I didn’t think it really was. Where's your proof contradicting Nancy's own words, @VanessaReardon? She's definitely honest here that at the end of her tenure, it wasn't an environment that promoted creativity. She could have other reasons as well for leaving (like I believe she had gotten pregnant again by this time), but she definitely wasn't happy with the working environment when she left.
  22. Y&R doesn't want HT's version of Victoria, especially with the agenda they continue to push with the Adam character. A stronger Victoria would obliterate Adam and show that she's her father's daughter and his true heir apparent.
  23. The last episode where Nancy Curlee and Stepehen Demorest are listed together as HWs. In early '94, Patrick Mulcahey is now listed as their third Co-HW. Demorest would return again later in '94, but was fired for good by the end of that year. Patrick Mulcahey is listed as HW by himself in the next set of credited episodes, but hated that experience after Curlee/Demorest left. I know Curlee was very unhappy at this point as she felt the show and her work had been "taken away" from her. It is basically a JFP/corporate vanity production at this point with so many of her worst habits that were later noticible at other shows she produced. It's not surprising that the bubbling Bridget/Vanessa custody battle over Peter is the major/central story in Curlee's last credited episode. That's the one story that really felt like her work at this point and the type of complicated material she excelled at. And that beautiful conversation between Blake and Michelle in the Bauer kitchen (20:50 in) where they discuss the situation over Peter is also so thoughtful and a trademark of her work. Curlee may have had a quick HW-ing stint, but who knew that her work would still be remembered/discussed over 25 years later? And who knew that GL would never have a HW that thoughtful again?
