Peter Marshall calls Hall of Fame induction the ‘epitome’ of awards By Shauna Johnson November 15, 2013 - 12:11 pm CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The man born Ralph Pierre LaCock in Clarksburg in 1926 has returned to the Mountain State to become part of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. He’s better known by his stage name, Peter Marshall, a name that has, over the years, taken him to Broadway, London, Hollywood and the radio with the “Music of Your Life” radio network, his current gig. “Nobody really introduced me to show business, I knew, as a kid, that’s what I wanted to do,” said Marshall whose family moved throughout West Virginia, during his formative years, because of his father’s job as a pharmacist. Marshall spent ten years in Wheeling and, later, ended up attending Huntington High School, his parents’ alma mater, before he moved to New York in his teens following his father’s death. His mother was a costume designer. His eldest sister, Joanne Dru, was an actress. He was heading back to Huntington on Friday morning while he was a guest on MetroNews “Talkline.” “I’ve got my daughter, my wife and my niece and they’ve never seen Huntington, so it’s very exciting for me,” he told Hoppy Kercheval. There have been reports Marshall’s stage name is actually a nod to the former Marshall College in Huntington, now known as Marshall University. On Saturday night, Marshall was scheduled to be in Charleston to be inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame along with Melvin and Ray Goins, Wayne Moss, Tim O’Brien, Ada “Bricktop” Smith, Eleanor Steber and The Swan Silvertones. Together, they make up the fifth induction class. Marshall was being recognized as an actor, singer and entertainer a year after hosting the event. Over the years, he appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” starred with Chita Rivera in “Bye-Bye Birdie,” and played in “Skyscraper” with Julie Harris among many other shows. In the 1980s, Marshall was George in “La Cage Aux Folles” for more than 800 performances. He also acted in films including “Ensign Pulver,” “Swinging Along” and was the radio crooner in “Annie.” Marshall was hired to be the original host of “Hollywood Squares” and spent more than 16 years hosting thousands of episodes of the game show. “I’ve had a lot of awards in my life. I have five Emmys. I’m in the Television Hall of Fame but, to me, this is the epitome, this is the big one for me,” said Marshall of his induction into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. Saturday night’s ceremony at the Culture Center in Charleston will be broadcast live on West Virginia Public Broadcasting stations starting at 7:30 p.m. Mollie O’Brien and John Kruk, a Charleston native who is a former major league baseball player and current ESPN commentator, will co-host the event. HOLLYWOOD SQUARES Banter... Peter Marshall: "Eddie Fisher recently said, 'I am sorry. I am sorry for them both.' Who was he referring to?" Paul Lynde: "His fans." Marshall: "According to Tony Randall, 'Every woman I've been intimate with in my life has been...' what?" Lynde: "Bitterly disappointed." Marshall: "Paul, how many fingers in the girl scout salute?" Lynde: "Gee, I don't remember. The last time I saw it was when I didn't buy their cookies." Marshall: "Paul, does Ann Landers think there is anything wrong with you if you do your housework in the nude?" Lynde: "No, but I have to be terribly careful when I do my ironing." Marshall: "Paul, any good sailor knows that when a man falls off a ship you yell 'Man overboard!' What should you shout if a woman falls overboard?" Lynde: "Full speed ahead!" Marshall: "What are 'dual-purpose cattle' good for that other cattle aren't?" Lynde: "They give milk... and cookies, but I don't recommend the cookies." Marshall: "Paul, why do Hell's Angels wear leather?" Lynde: "Because chiffon wrinkles too easily." Marshall: "According to the IRS, out of every 10 Americans audited, how many end up paying more taxes?" Lynde: "11." Marshall: "What's the one thing you should never do in bed?" Lynde: "Point and laugh!" Marshall: "In 'The Wizard Of Oz', the Tin Man wanted a heart, and the Lion wanted courage. What did the Straw Man want?" Lynde: "He wanted the Tin Man to notice him." Marshall: "In the Shakespearean play 'King Lear,' King Lear had three of them - Goneril, Cordelia, and Regan? Who were they?" Lynde: "King Lear had Goneril?" Marshall: "Paul, does Ann Landers think there is anything wrong with you if you do your housework in the nude?" Lynde: "No, but I have to be terribly careful when I do my ironing." Marshall: "Paul, everyone knows the first verse: What shall we do with the drunken sailor? / What shall we do with the drunken sailor? / What shall we do with the drunken sailor? / Early in the morning? But what is the first line of the next verse?" Lynde : [singing] "Put him in bed with Elizabeth Taylor / Put him in bed with Elizabeth Taylor / Put him in bed with Elizabeth Taylor / Early in the morning." [audience laughs] "How disgusting... that poor sailor!" Marshall: "True or false, Paul Revere had 16 children?" Lynde: "From ONE midnight ride?" Marshall: "Back in the 1870s, Emile Berliner invented something, and without it, I wouldn't be able to do my job. What was it?" Lynde: "Let's see... toupees? Facelifts? Contact lenses?" Marshall: "Now cut that out!" Lynde: "Makeup? Capped teeth? Loud sports jackets?" Pamela Blair ONE LIFE TO LIVE Betty Jane, Morning News Interviewer July 1991 Marshall's took more time than expected. More coming up tonight or early tomorrow.

THERE IS SOMETHING familiar, almost mythic, about the sight of Gena Rowlands striding up the hallway of her Hollywood Hills residence. Her presence in this narrow, photograph-lined corridor, as well as the living room, staircase and bedrooms, has been captured in almost every film that Ms. Rowlands's husband, John Cassavetes, wrote and directed and she starred in. In fact, Mr. Cassavetes, who died in 1989, so often used his home as a movie set that it has become part of independent film lore how the sleepy-eyed Cassavetes family would regularly begin their mornings by picking their way to the breakfast table through a forest of cameras, light stands and electrical equipment. This white two-story dwelling is also considered historic because the couple relied upon it to help finance Mr. Cassavetes's messy emotional dramas, mortgaging the property ''endlessly,'' says Ms. Rowlands, laughing. ''Endlessly,'' she repeats. It has been 12 years since these rooms served as base camp to a film crew. But spend a few hours with Ms. Rowlands in her wood-paneled den with the glass-topped coffee table and the stack of Christmas catalogues, and you'll see she is hardly alone. A pair of middle-aged assistants are scuttling around her home office. And Ms. Rowlands's youngest daughter, Zoe, who is 26, barefoot and in faded sweats, will make a cameo appearance. (''I'm sorry,'' Zoe apologizes as she is spotted creeping with exaggerated stealth toward the bar refrigerator. ''I really want a Diet Coke.'' Another daughter, Xan, is 31 and a singer.) Still, compared with the bustle of the old days, the house must feel practically deserted. This month, in her latest film, ''Unhook the Stars,'' the 66-year-old Ms. Rowlands portrays a character who is struggling to sort out what to do about a life that has literally been de-populated. Her character, Mildred, is an ordinary suburban widow who can't bear the isolation consigned to most women who are no longer needed by their offspring and no longer in possession of a spouse. Her punkish, slatternly neighbor (Marisa Tomei) takes one look at the way Mildred's half-smile is set at eager-to-please and employs her as the no-pay baby sitter of her young son (Jake Lloyd). The rest of ''Unhook the Stars'' is about the friendship between the older housewife and the little boy, and how the connection opens up both of their worlds. The film, which opened on Friday, has not always fared as well as its star, who has received glowing notices for her performance. Although one could point out that this isn't the first time in Ms. Rowlands's 38-year movie career that she has been cast as a parental type, mostly she has portrayed rather questionable Mom figures -- the gun-wielding tough gal in ''Gloria'' or the full-blown fruitcake of ''A Woman Under the Influence,'' two films that won her Academy Award nominations. (In the 1968 film ''Faces,'' she had one of her decidedly non-mom roles.) In the end, it took Ms. Rowlands's own son, the 37-year-old Nick Cassavetes, to showcase her as a skilled nurturer. Mr. Cassavetes not only directed ''Unhook the Stars'' and wrote it with Helen Caldwell but somehow had faith that he and his mother could team up for his behind-the-camera debut and not have things dissolve into an Oedipal disaster. ''Films are always a crap shoot,'' admits Mr. Cassavetes, whose emergence as a director has surprised those who know him better as the romantic lead in erotic B-movies like ''Sins of Desire,'' also starring Tanya Roberts, a former Charlie's Angel. ''But however great an actress she is, Gena is an even more amazing person. There will always be relatives to whom you will never not be the kid who picked his nose or did something stupid. But Gena never puts that on you. She took me and the project very seriously.'' The two learned each other's work habits on the job. Ms. Rowlands got used to being addressed as Mom by a son who had always preferred to call her by her first name. Mr. Cassavetes learned to do things like gently remind his world-class actress mother that he didn't share his father's fondness for occasional improvisation. ''He said: 'Um, Mom? Would you like to see the lines?' '' Ms. Rowlands says. ''And I said: 'Uh, no. Would you like to hear the lines?' And he said, 'Yeah, why not give them a shot?' So I did.'' It is an underlying premise of ''Unhook the Stars,'' that as is often the case in life, tiny fears are what keep people apart and simple gestures are what bring them together. Maybe that's why Ms. Rowlands seems to go out of her way to disarm her co-stars, many of whom quake at the notion of working with a leading lady who is regarded as one of the finest of her generation. ''Yeah, I was nervous and excited,'' says Ms. Tomei, whose fears were partly alleviated by what Ms. Rowlands wore the day Ms. Tomei arrived at the Salt Lake City location. ''She was wearing a little baseball cap and matching uniform,'' Ms. Tomei says. ''She came over and gave me this big hug. And we just started talking. Her whole modus operandi is to make the best film possible, and what that comes out of is people sharing passion for the film.'' Unfortunately, it takes more than Ms. Rowlands's supreme professionalism to make that happen. In the seven years since her husband died of cirrhosis of the liver, few film makers have seemed to know exactly what to do with her. The director Jim Jarmusch shrewdly positioned Ms. Rowlands as a brassy casting director in his 1991 picture ''Night on Earth.'' But in Lasse Hallstrom's ''Once Around'' (1991) and ''Something to Talk About'' (1995), Ms. Rowlands hovered on the edges of the story, there to lecture or console her troubled brood, then disappear back into the shadows. And Linda Yellen's ''Parallel Lives'' (1994) managed to dither away not only Ms. Rowlands's capacious talents but also those of Ben Gazzara, who also starred in many of Mr. Cassavetes's personal projects. ''It's hard,'' says Ms. Rowlands, who prepares for each job meticulously, mulling over motivation and appearance, poring over the script until it tatters. ''But you can't always have it your own way. And God knows I've had a lot of it. You still work the same; you prepare the same. And it's an interesting discipline, really, to see if the way you prepare still holds up. I always try to find something that I've never done. Like the light comedy scene in 'Something to Talk About.' I'd never done light comedy before.'' But there is scant dramatic territory where she hasn't staked her claim. The daughter of a state senator and amateur artist, the Wisconsin-born Ms. Rowlands got her first real break in 1956, playing opposite Edward G. Robinson in Paddy Chayefsky's play ''Middle of the Night.'' But it was her turn at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts that is considered more pivotal by Ms. Rowlands's fans. After delivering her final lines in something called ''Dangerous Corners,'' she found herself backstage, being asked out on a date by an audience member. Four months later, the aspiring actor and the leggy blond ingenue were married. ''John wasn't shy'' is Ms. Rowlands's concise deconstruction of the whirlwind courtship. While Ms. Rowlands has always been a hot property in cinema, television and on the stage, nothing has compared to the intensity of her collaborations with Mr. Cassavetes. In script after script, he featured Ms. Rowlands as the psychologically troubled linchpin around whom members of his unofficial ensemble company -- Mr. Gazzara, Peter Falk, Seymour Cassell -- fluttered with macho confusion. With each outing, Mr. Cassavetes gave his wife the opportunity that few cool movie beauties are afforded: to be as physical as any comic sidekick, routinely celebrated when she forsook vanity in favor of screwing her lipsticky mouth sideways or collapsing face down on the floor. ''He was an author who was ahead of his time,'' says Ms. Rowlands, who willingly proffers anecdotes about Mr. Cassavetes but seems disinclined to answer direct questions about him. Will she share what she misses most about their heyday? ''No,'' Ms. Rowlands replies, with a smile that is tight with grief. WHEN SHE AGREED TO do ''Night on Earth,'' Mr. Jarmusch was unaware that Ms. Rowlands, who stuck to television and stage appearances following her husband's demise, had chosen to make his movie when she was still somewhat vulnerable. Upon reflection, though, Mr. Jarmusch says there were obvious clues. ''I found myself getting these really touching phone calls from Ben Gazzara, Seymour Cassell and Peter Falk,'' says Mr. Jarmusch, who now thinks of Ms. Rowlands as the center of a huge, extended clan made up of her children, other blood relations and guys who palled around with Mr. Cassavetes. ''It was like they were her three brothers, just checking up on her, seeing how she was doing. Like, Peter Falk, who I have still never even met, would call and say: 'Jarmusch? It's Falk. How's Gena? Everything good?' '' These days, it appears that filmgoers are in the ecstatic throes of Rowlands-mania. Several weeks ago, in Los Angeles, the A.F.I. Fest presented a special ''Tribute to Gena Rowlands'' event on its eclectic roster. Sharon Stone's recent announcement of her intention to star in the remake of ''Gloria'' (Ms. Rowlands's 1980 film, directed by her husband) made it to the front page of Daily Variety. And on Dec. 6, the Anthology Film Archive on the Lower East Side of Manhattan will kick off a Gena Rowlands retrospective, offering 10 consecutive dates on which anyone with $7 can have the pleasure of her mysterious brown eyes beaming down from the big screen. One unlikely to purchase a ticket would be the former New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael, who occasionally managed to dredge up compliments for Ms. Rowlands's acting but regularly trashed Mr. Cassavetes's oeuvre with lines like ''he prolongs shots to the point of embarrassment (and beyond).'' ''It was a personal thing between her and John,'' Ms. Rowlands says. ''She didn't like him, didn't like the work.'' Ms. Rowlands says the closest she ever came to meeting Ms. Kael was at a party they both attended. ''She sent someone over, but I didn't want to meet her,'' Ms. Rowlands adds, suddenly transforming from an elegantly-appointed doyenne into one of her hotheaded film counterparts. Then she laughs, her eyebrows arching naughtily. ''I mean, I knew I'd just say something very bad, so what was the point?'' 8. If it turns up, I'll add a more specific date to her Hopper profile. I had it in my old written copy of the ATWT cast list, so if I wasn't actually watching, it was in an in and out or comings and goings column in one of the soap opera mags. I didn't add dates until posting here at SON.

  14. Splitting twice a year (now) Terry's job with Portia (because he can't write anything proactive for her on the canvas. She's either the angry black woman or doctor/chief of staff. Don't get me wrong I'd rather see both have actual stories while Sonny and Jason get some time on the old back burner, but frank wn't do that....) was the end for Terry. Yuri gets more mentions than she does... I kinda liked Blaze and she did improve. Waiting a month after Pride month and dumping her but keeping Natalia is just awful. If he wanted LaRue, this was not the character for her to play. I agree with @Vee, Natalia needs to be killed off, not just sent away. This is the way Piss-poor EP #firefrank casts these actors with name recognition every time...
  15. Not unexpected. See Lucas, Brad, Felix, Twice a month Terry who is now twice every six months Terry... #firefrank as usual

  22. A little more about Radio Playhouse CURTAIN CALL FOR MUTUAL'S QUARTETTE Radio Playhouse & The Faces of Love By Jim Widner © 2009 (From Radio Recall, December 2009) I began collecting in the early seventies just as there was a resurgence of dramatic radio at the start of that decade. While I have fond memories of listening to the last of radio drama in the early sixties, I was actually a child of television having grown up in the fifties, and most of my radio drama experience came from the programs that were broadcast as a result of the resurgence. During that period, it seemed as if there was no end to radio drama as many stations began carrying the programs that gave many of today’s young collectors their spark of interest in the hobby. I was familiar with many of the programs being broadcast, but was surprised when Jack French, your editor, brought to my attention some episodes of a radio soap called The Faces of Love which the Old Time Radio Researchers organization released recently in one of their Distribution CDs. Neither Jack nor I had ever heard of the program and that sparked the two of us to want to find out more. After its offering of the Zero Hour in 1973 and its subsequent demise of that series due to low response, the Mutual Broadcasting System decided to try again creating a series of four programs under an umbrella called Radio Playhouse. Radio Playhouse was originally the name of the umbrella created by Mutual in 1953 through which it offered over 1 million dollars worth of transcribed series to its network. Using the same concept, the umbrella of four programs premiered over WOR Mutual on August 4th, 1975. The series was produced by a division of Young and Rubicom, one of the major advertising agencies of the time. Richard Cox was the creator and producer of the series and head of Young and Rubicam Ventures, a division of the advertising agency. The four programs would run Monday through Friday, originating out of the WOR studios and available to Mutual Network subscribing stations. Each of the four programs would be fifteen minutes in length and run contiguously thus creating a single hour long program umbrella each day. The programs’ storylines all were themed to women and with a touch of feminist rebellion prevalent in the culture in the mid-seventies. The broadcast time was from three to four o’clock PM near the end of the Daytime serial broadcast period. First off was: The Faces of Love, which Mutual described in publicity releases: “Suddenly, a young woman is thrust, completely unprepared, into a life of complete freedom. Her traditional background conflicts with her new-found freedom to confront her with difficult decisions at every turn.” Program two was Author’s Studio, which Mutual summarized in these words: “Dramatizations of famous novels in serialized form, the first of which is William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair. A romantic story featuring the bright and clever Becky Sharp, a liberated woman a century ahead of her time.” The third program was The Little Things in Life, written by a name well-known to old time radio fans: Peg Lynch, creator of the probably better known Ethel and Albert. This Lynch creation was to be: “A light-hearted and high-spirited program which takes a fond and good-natured look at the trivialities which serve to frustrate us in our daily lives. You’ll recognize and identify with the events in the series.” Finally, the last quarter was To Have & To Hold: which Mutual characterized as: “The stresses and demands which face two families of doctors who are daily involved with life and death decisions is the setting for this highly-charged dramatic program. You’ll agonize and sympathize as the doctors mix the volatile combination of emotion and intellect in a contemporary society.” When Radio Playhouse premiered in 1975, The Faces of Love in its initial offering starred Joan Lorring and Mason Adams with Jackson Beck announcing. I haven’t heard any episodes of that run, so I’m not sure about the storyline. The second run starred a young and upcoming Morgan Fairchild as Kate Wakefield. In an email exchange with Ms. Fairchild, she told me she was living in New York City at the time and working on the television drama, Search for Tomorrow as well as appearing occasionally on Kojak and doing commercials. In addition she had appeared on some of the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre shows, created and directed by Himan Brown. She said she got the role of Kate Wakefield because of her appearances on Radio Mystery Theatre. “There were a lot of name actors doing them and we had so much fun!” she wrote. For her radio appearances she only got AFTRA scale of $44.00 an episode! Yet Ms. Fairchild felt it well worth the low pay for an up and coming young actress: “I got to meet so many good actors and they [the radio programs] were a hoot to work on. Also, as a young actor, I loved being able to use only my voice to convey a scene. I thought it was good training for me.” I originally had stated in my email to her that she had appeared occasionally on Search for Tomorrow but she corrected me: “I was not ‘appearing occasionally’ on Search at the time. I was one of the regulars on it [playing the paranoid murderess, Jennifer Pace Phillips]. Susan Lucci and I were emerging as the early ‘bitch goddesses’ of daytime, as the genre went through the transformation from ‘kitchen table discussion’ shows to more high style and upscale formats.” The title of the program, The Faces of Love, apparently comes from its opening: “Love is gentle, faithful, swift, passionate, blind and wondrous. All these are ‘faces of love’.” The gist of the storyline, at least for the programs available, has the now-widowed Kate Wakefield working for a Real Estate company in a city in the U.S. Her late husband, Tom Wakefield, apparently had been involved in drug smuggling as well as being an addict himself. His death apparently is a mystery, but he died near Glory Point in Jamaica the location of the one hundred year old estate, now-in-decline, and belonging to the Pomeroy family. Kate decides to visit the family seemingly in search of both her past life with Tom and looking for the real cause of Tom’s death. The series was written by Margaret Lewerth, a veteran radio writer with roots in the late thirties. Her credentials include the Columbia Workshop (adaptation of Stephen Crane’s Red Badge of Courage and others), Cavalcade of America, Ford Theater, Powder Box Theater, and Americans at Work. Her work in the soap genre includes a stint in the Frank & Anne Hummert radio factory where she penned a soap called Helpmate (1941-1944). Besides Morgan Fairchild, the other primary star was Clement Fowler (as Lewis Pomeroy), who had an extensive stage acting career as well as film and television. In later life Fowler had an extensive career in daytime television serials based out of New York City. The veteran actor just recently passed away in August 2009 at the age of 84. The rest of the cast was filled out by oft-appearing radio acting veterans based in the New York City area including Bryna Raeburn, Staats Cotsworth, Teri Keane, Mason Adams, Joan Shea and many others. Mel Brandt was the regular announcer. In her email to me, Ms. Fairchild stated she loved the training the radio series gave her in using her voice to convey a scene. This is somewhat surprising because, quite frankly, she is very, very good in the role of Kate Wakefield. Considering this was early in her career, she is amazingly adept at emoting with her voice, sounding very natural in the role. The series is actually very well written and fun to listen to though the existing copies in the OTRR library have no dates. It is easy enough to put them in order even if the dates are missing. In creating the hour long series, Radio Playhouse, Richard Cox explained that its genesis was somewhat fortuitous. At a lunch with one of his clients, Bristol Myers, the company officials were complaining about the costs of television sponsorship. Cox, a self-described radio fan, suggested radio as a medium for sponsoring a program. During the course of that lunch, the ad exec had mapped out an hour long umbrella consisting of “two soaps, the adaptation of a famous novel or play, and the comedy.” The show was offered to stations on a barter basis in which Bristol Myers got six minutes of commercial time and local stations would get 12 minutes to fill with their own sponsors. At the time, and ultimately what occurred, the idea of a new dramatic program was considered “an uphill fight.” By 1975 when this series debuted, Mutual had already pulled its free offerings to local stations including Zero Hour because of disappointing response. Others had also failed. Though he was hopeful at the time, so too, Radio Playhouse including The Faces of Love would end its run and leave the air by summer’s end in 1976 after 26 weeks. @dc11786 @DRW50 @Paul Raven@jam6242@Matt
