O'Connor April 5, 1979 RAZZMATAZZ” is the kind of project that just can't help scoring brownie points for a broadcaster. In fact, that may be its only purpose. The latest installment of the monthly CBS News production, which can be seen this afternoon at 4 o'clock, features segments on an underwater park in the Virgin Islands, firefighting in New Jersey, the National Horse Show in New York and electronic tricks performed by Don Herbert (Mr. Wizard) in a television studio. The program is designed for young people, presumably up to the earlyteen level. Joel Heller, executive producer, has explained that the focus would be kept on “the infinite ways in which young people are enthusiasti‐. cally enjoying and participating in life ‐ life in the ‘real world.’ “ “The stress,” he added, “is on the positive, on the real pleasure that these young people are getting from their success, no matter what the endeavor.” The public should be grateful, of course, for any alternatives that television might offer to the cartoon‐glutted norm in children's programming. CBS News has devised one rewarding form in “30 Minutes,” the Saturday‐afternoon weekly magazine that is also aimed at young viewers and manages to dig into some’ stories with a modicum of depth. “Razzmatazz,” now in its second season, is taking a considerably more superficial route. Perhaps that is one inevitable result of being aggressively positive. Last month's edition, for instance, carried a piece on Direction Sports, a school program combining sports with academic contests. The problem was that most of the questions seemed to focus on sports trivia. This supposed learning advance was not allowed to interfere with the feature's up This afternoon, Brian Tochi, an ebullient 19‐year‐old who has replaced Barry Bostwick, the actor. as host, can be seen visiting the underwater national park. Mr. Tochi goes sailing and horseback riding with two young women, granddaughters of a local senator. A dollop of information is inserted about coral reefs. The youngsters giggle a bit on a beach: And Mr. Tochi ends with a reference to “my unforgettable trip to this part of the United States.” Neat little lessons abound. For Hank, who won only $35 in a motorcycle race with a $600 purse, it was “the fun and excitement that counted.” For this afternoon's junior volunteer firemen, after going through a very ordinary drill, it is that “they know that someday a life will be saved because of their training.” And for a young horseman who fails to win a blue ribbon, it is that “I ride for my own personal. satisfaction.” For this writer, “Razzmatazz” has its enthusiastically participating heart in the right place. What the series needs now is more substance and the willingness, at least occasionally, to get beneath surfaces that are as slick and empty as a commercial for a soft drink. At the pace of once a month, that shouldn't be asking too much. On the evening, prime‐time front, ABC‐TV is offering, at about 10 o'clock — depending on the length of President Carter's energy address Ȅ the premiere of a series called “Doctors’ Private Lives.” What are doctors like outside hospital operating rooms? According to this David Gerber production, they are sexually obsessed. That's what? This evening, “a beautiful cardiac surgeon” joins the cardiovascular unit of the hospital and, while battling the male‐chauvinist establishment, begins an affair with the chief surgeon. As someone observes, “She sends out different messages — one with her mind, the others with the rest of her.” Meanwhile, a noted feminist enters the hospital, insisting she be given “piggyback” heart operation, the house specialty of the beautiful surgeon. Despite an offer of a sizable bequest to the hospital, the aging feminist meets some resistance. Switch for several minutes to the young handsome doctor “making out” with the even younger medical student. All ends well, needless to say, with the beautiful surgeon in operating room, triumphally announcing, “All right, gentlemen, let's close her up.” Possibly the most memorable scene has the chief surgeon visiting the beautiful surgeon's new “pad,” which bears some resemblance to Citizen Kane's mansion. “Incredible,” he says.in wonderment, “how in the world did you find a place like this?” It's easy. Just get yourself a dumb concept and an even dumber script. Rumely became the newest inductees in the South Shore Legends Thursday. The ninth induction took place at the Indiana Visitors Center in Hammond, where South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority’s Speros Batistatos and John Davies, Coordinator for the Wall of Legends Project, introduced speakers for the awards. Born Patricia Betsy Hrunek, she graduated from East Chicago’s Roosevelt High School in 1944. She attended the East Chicago Business College, until deciding that a career in drama was her calling. She became Betsy Palmer as she began her career in 1951 in “Miss Susan,” a soap opera filmed in Philadelphia. She moved to the stage with the role of Nellie Forbush in “South Pacific” and other roles.
